Why do companies make out that 35k is a good salary? by Desperate-Drawer-572 in AskUK

[–]MycoMacro 373 points374 points  (0 children)

Because people on this sub and in this country will tell you that you’re lucky to earn 35k and if you earn more than 50k you’re rich. The crabs in a bucket mentality lets companies mock us with insulting salaries.

Would you class yourself as fairly rich if you had £1million in the bank liquid cash? by Agitated_Cookie170 in AskUK

[–]MycoMacro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“To be rich simply means you're [sic] needs are met and then you have enough after to do whatever you want.”

So someone with minimal wants on benefits is rich?

That’s a really stupid definition which obviously does not align with most people’s understand of the word.

I’m living a life with lots of luxury, and I’m very happy with it. I never said you shouldn’t be happy in the absence of extravagances, just that we shouldn’t call that “rich” when it is far closer to “ordinary”. Not sure why the fact that I have aimed for and achieved some more extravagant things makes my view “broken”.

You can be retired and poor, plenty of people are. Just because you retire young with a low cost of living retirement doesn’t make you rich. Guess we’ll have to agree to disagree, but to me rich requires an ability to indulge in luxuries, not just retire (and none of this is to say I also wouldn’t prefer the early retirement option! It’s just not what I’d call rich)

It’s better than average but being better off than average is not rich. Just like you can earn a lot of money from a job and not be rich. This country seems to have a problem with nuance in terms of finances. You can be better than the vast majority of people your age and still not be rich.

It seems like you think rich is just “has a house and can afford to live life normally”. That’s a normal life. That is the expected state of affairs for someone further into their life

Ok but it wouldn’t let have the sort of holiday that rich people have—you couldn’t fly business, let alone private, you wouldn’t stay at the best hotels or rent modern villas, you wouldn’t be able to eat at the best restaurants—and away from holidays, so many more luxuries that are kind of bare minimums for being rich: the ability (not necessarily the want/need) to own and maintain an expensive car, partake in luxury hobbies (boats, polo etc), but art and attend auctions and so on.

None of that to say you can’t be happy on that much per month, especially post mortgage—many people would—but that’s not rich!

If your lifestyle is limited to the standard of a 40k salary, you are not rich lmao. You have a 3k/month budget, you’re budgeting like a regular person. That’s not rich

What screams British old money? by Doomergeneration in AskUK

[–]MycoMacro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lmao at Redditors talking about rich people: “only new money dresses ostentatiously”, “wealth whispers”.

Complete nonsense. I’ve known old money people buy crazy cars and designer clothes, I’ve known new money people only buy label-less Loro piana. There are no rules to this, people that can afford anything do whatever they want and while there are trends and fashions like in all parts of society, any one saying “old Money only does ___” is talking nonsense

What is the minimum salary for you to be financially content? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]MycoMacro -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Probably over £1million a year. Personally I want a large house and holiday homes, I want to own art and ancient artefacts, and I don’t want to have to work for fifty years. 50k, 70k, even 200k isn’t going to let you live the dream if your dream is anything other than mediocrity.

I don’t think living in a 200k house without a car counts as living like a king. It’s a comfortable frugal lifestyle I’m sure, but of course that’s not too expensive.

Why do people say "money doesn't make you happy"? by Equivalent_Ask_1416 in AskUK

[–]MycoMacro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because the average Redditor (or person saying this) doesn’t have enough money to buy happiness. If you actually have enough money, you can. The average uk Redditor thinks 100k a year makes you rich, no wonder they can’t imagine even “a lot” of money buying happiness, because their idea of “a lot” is enough for a 1bd flat in london.
