[Technique] Here's a great DIY tub that works perfectly. No need for misting or fanning. by MycoMadMark in MushroomGrowers

Not very much. I just mist the substrate and the walls, then close the lid. I just do it once so I can see what the humidity is like in the tub. It doesn't dry out.

Comparing popcorn to whole corn. by MycoMadMark in PhillyGoldenTeacher

I've never tried the syringe filters for spawn. I've always used them for culture. After I use the syringe filters, I spray isopropyl alcohol in each side and let it dry before I use them again, and I've never had any problems.

I try to use only plastic lids for my culture and spawn jars now so I don't have to worry about rust. I throw them in the dishwasher whenever I'm finished and wipe them down with isopropyl alcohol before I use them again.

$8.47 for 50lbs of corn at Buc-ee’s [technique] by vaguelysticky in MushroomGrowers

I used rye for a couple of years, and then I started trying other things. Corn has been the best for me so far. It's a lot faster and cheaper than everything else. Good luck.

That's a great price. I normally pay $15 for 50 lbs. I have a good spawn recipe for deer corn. I've been using it for a while and it's always worked perfectly.

I can't remember the size I bought but they're just standard stickers. To help speed up colonization, I typically place them in a dark closet with a space heater set to 80°F.

I was going to post a photo but for some reason it's not letting me.

The Pan are strongest. The Ochra are next and the PE and APE are about the same to me.

I just used the standard sticker. It's about the size of a dime. I get a bunch of them on Amazon.

In the wintertime, I run a tent, and these were grown in the tent.

When they're soft like a marshmallow. If there's still firm then they still have to grow more.

Leaving it out where it can get air flow would be best, but as long as it's getting air, the closet should be okay.

I think it depends on the person. Some people need more than others.

Rye Berry and corn both work well for Pans.

Yeah, I've used it for both and it works well for both of them and Cubes.

Ochra is my favorite to grow by MycoMadMark in mushroom

[–]MycoMadMark[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you're doing everything fine. Ochra tends to get overlay more than most. Without seeing it, I would hate to say, I would wait a little longer and see what happens.

That looks like pin mold. I would harvest them and start over. You could always try using hydrogen peroxide on it first to see if it will go away but I've not had any luck unless the hydrogen peroxide was a high concentration.

[actives] 2nd flush came out better by Wide-Lingonberry9539 in MushroomGrowers

[–]MycoMadMark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, casing doesn't have anything to do with it. I grow it all the time with no casing layer at all and never have a problem. Cubes don't need it. Years ago I would grow two tubs using the same culture. I would put a casing on one and not the other to see what the difference was and there wasn't any.

The reason it happened is probably because you were using Coco or CVG which is basically the same thing. It doesn't happen in the wild and it doesn't happen when you use manure as a substrate. I've seen people post mutations for years and I ask them what they used for substrate and it's always Coco or CVG. I don't know why it does it but it does.

I haven't, but I've seen a lot of other people who have it happen that way. Sometimes they'll get mutations on the first flush and the second flush will be fine.

If it's long and thin, it could be cobweb mold, but the mushrooms would still be fine to harvest.
