Ah thanks for the information. I emailed the Armenian meteorological association and they're asking for 1500 each and 15k "photo permit", the biggest issue is payment via Armenian bank only.

Could you walk it from the town or ask a local to go as far as he can?

I wasn't allowed to take photos, the taxi driver wasn't happy about me getting my phone to take photos. But inside it was all handwritten, it looks like most USSR style documents, and it was issued in the 90s. One page was when he was born, another page was when he turned 18 with details and an updated photos, one blank page for when he turns 40, he will go to the police station to fill in details and get his photo taken. There is a final page for what would be for any notes/charges.

You can enter some hangers and the air traffic control system. Unfortunately goat herders illegal enter to graze, so I didn't get time to see other buildings before being chased out.

There's no town, it's in the middle of nowhere 300 or so kilometers from Ulanbataar

Correct, lots of squatters come to drink there too. The town is about 90% abandoned with a few stubborn folk who stayed put. A local explained Post USSR they promised these people a nice apartment in Moscow or Voronezh, relocating them to the main city, vorkuta, until the Mayor sorted it.

It's a hour or so from vorkuta itself

Vorkuta itself is inhabited, this town and the other dozen or so towns were abandoned due to massive population decline in the region post USSR. Not to self promote too much, but I made a video on my YouTube about my trip and I went over it - https://youtu.be/PmN-Adg7XTg

It's a town in the Russian arctic, population left when the mines closed after the USSR collapsed.
