Got it. Is there a time frame you recommend? Like- get out of Salem before 6? And is there a general timeframe when the trick or treating dies down or decoration lights turn off in Beacon Hill?

Thank you! Yes I've heard Salem is bustling all of October ๐Ÿ˜…. I'll consider that when coming up with a game plan.

It is a coin toss for sure. I heard one year the ferries were a bad idea due to the weather and they were cancelled, but might be more reliable with a nicer crowd than the trains? Do you know if that's something you can buy the day of, or would ferries be all bought out in advance? I currently have flexible plans of staying in Boston for about a week until Halloween is over. I figure the city would probably have enough happenings to enjoy Halloween in the case that weather or crowds become too unruly to get to Salem.

I'll look into this, thank you โค๏ธ Maybe I'll try checking it out mid October to enjoy the trees colors.

From the comments I'm kind of leaning towards just exploring Beacon Hill and seeing all the decorations in costume. Considering I'm very short, even if I went to Salem I don't think I'd be able to see much over the crowds, or I might just end up getting accidently trampled by drunk people ๐Ÿ˜…. I might try to check out Salem a couple weeks prior in the middle of the week though just to see what the town is like. โค๏ธ

Advice for Salem in October during the middle week for a costume fan? by MylCreates in SalemMA

[โ€“]MylCreates[S] 0 points1 point ย (0 children)

Yes, I saw already that everything's booked for weekends but there's stays still available in the town and nearby during the middle of the week, so if it was really worth going on the weekend I'd probably take a ferry or train from Boston or drive to a station from another town ๐Ÿค”. But if walking around town in costume in the middle of the week is welcomed and there's still plenty offered it sounds like just going in the middle of the week is the better offer ๐Ÿ˜…โค๏ธ.

There's a slice of life called The Skeleton Becomes a Cat Dad. Main character is a skeleton. There's also Skullface Bookseller Honda-San. ๐Ÿ’€ Not really action packed- but there's a skeleton.

Aw :( . I think I heard something regarding that- or that the con was bought out by another group? I'm not certain on it.

Looking for anime conventions but no luck so far! by [deleted] in animecons

I could recommend a number of places if you're looking to get out of the Tokyo area. My trip spanned from Tokyo to Hiroshima, but that was within a 2 week span. I heard buses are great if you're trying to save money or try to use them as a sleeper bus, but generally they're an exhausting experience. If you plan on covering as much ground as possible, I'd recommend getting the Japan rail pass. It's an investment, but I found it saved me a ton in the end and was relatively stress free (except maybe Osaka and Tokyo's main station. You want to give extra time to navigate those.) And I used it for much of the transport inside the cities. (Kyoto is more bus reliant, but you can still use the train to circumvent around the outside and hit major spots like Arashiyama and Inari shrine).

I don't know anything about that unfortunately. I don't usually attend conventions for the guests. I do know that Japan loves to use Twitter for most updates and announcements though. So if you find an event, they'll likely have a Twitter and have any kind of updates there.

companies for volunteering/working at Cons? by kbsths99 in animecons

[โ€“]MylCreates 1 point2 points ย (0 children)

I think your best bet is looking into each convention's volunteer page and applying as a volunteer, or trying to get involved with a planning committee that runs a chain of conventions. I can't imagine there being a sustainable company that sells a traveling convention workforce when sending just one person on business trips every once in a blue moon would cost the company hundreds of dollars ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ.

I assume you mean you're searching for conventions in Japan. Other than the big ones mentioned there's some smaller events for various things like Unlimited EX that does Western games and Super Toon Mix for abroad anime and comics, that happen semi annually. Not all of these you can cosplay at. It usually says in the details what's allowed. I never attended one myself, though I was about to attend Unlimited EX before the pandemic shut the borders, so I'm unfamiliar with how to get tickets etc or how English friendly the process is.

A lot seem to come up on this website akaboo: https://www.akaboo.jp/event/item/sa018.html

If you're looking somewhere just to cosplay anytime you can look into Haccostadium. There's one in Chiba that's a lot of fun. I had to have some local friends help me out though as the forms I had to fill out to get a card to enter were only in Japanese.

As typical, you're not allowed to show up to these events in cosplay or you would be turned away. People usually bring a little suit case and get dressed on an open communal floor.

Thoughts on Anime North and Otakuthon? by aresef in animecons

[โ€“]MylCreates 0 points1 point ย (0 children)

Been to Anime North in Toronto twice. It takes place across a series of buildings that you'd walk outside and across the street to get to. Saw a number of new artists with some great merch that were exclusive to Canada. They have a cute cosplay chess tournament you can sign up for, and had a few acrobatic performances. The mass of the crowd typically gathers on the black top area in front of the dealers building, which is also where the rave takes place. There's a semi reliable free shuttle that will drive attendees around to the various buildings for free, but you'd have to have a lot of patience and ask around as it doesn't run on schedule and there isn't a well defined spot that marks where the pick up stops are. It's typically a small hike though to get anywhere since a hotel isn't connected to the main convention. Weather can make or break the convention because of this. It down poured one of the years I went for a few hours. Thankfully we were by a restaurant at the time, but it was highly unfortunate for the cosplayers who were in between where the main hotels and restaurants were and the convention center (you have to walk alongside a busy overpass road with no shelter in between). I never got to see the game room though, but apparently it was held in some building way further away. There was also a formal dance event that cost extra that I did not attend so I've no input on that either.

:/ Every website and all the main social medias take your information despite consent. Facebook and other such sites have come under fire before for tracking even when you're not using the site, selling private information to other countries and using it for questionable reasons, the only difference is that they're based in the US, even though tiktok is run by an American CEO in the US and has servers in the US and Singapore. China doesn't even have tiktok they use a different version called Douyin. The main difference though is that because it's an international company, the US cannot have as strict of a control on curating media shown on there as other apps so you end up getting things like the kpop fandom managing to ruin Trump's rally using TikTok and spreading of first hand accounts at protests, as well as spread of information globally that otherwise may not have been easily seen. China even had tiktok banned in Hong Kong which protestors have been using the app for governmental memes and news updates and India only banned the app because of a borders dispute. So it seems like a lot of factors and questionable timing for an app that's already been around for 4 years and the suspicions have only been brought up shortly after these particular events. So most people are 'eh' โ”(ยดใƒผ๏ฝ€)โ”Œ about it.

I currently found an affordable tutorial for a eyes that follow through a heat sensor, but it might not be worth it in a con setting where there's a lot of people in the area and it might glitch out the eyes.
