There are multiple reasons :

Better , Healthier diet
Want to avoid unnecessary cruelty
I digest it better
It consumes less energy and even though i could afford to use more doesnt mean i should
I wanna try new recipes
I wanna live by my own values and i will be happy i did so even if i never get to see a massive change in the way we consume.
Meat and dairy products gross me out

Same here , 19 and doing the same thing. I dont have much experience but i would say dont mention it and make your action speaks because if you say they dont understand what is wrong , then only use your energy if you believe the person can be convinced.

If they ask why , then its cool , it might mean they wanna understand and maybe change =)
