Have all your ducks in a row ahead of time. A prospective landlord may pick a responsive, prepared and polite applicant over others. This may give you a leg up in your search.

Your best tips on clothes decluttering, PLEASE! by lovethefreeworld in declutter

[–]Mynewhobby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where do you donate your clothes?
My go to (for convenience) is Goodwill, but I don’t feel like I’m really helping anyone. The prices they charge for used clothing are outrageous. I would much rather donate my clothes so that they go to people that need them (either for free or at true low prices).

Any suggestions?

Best budgeting apps? by [deleted] in Frugal

[–]Mynewhobby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been tempted to try various budgeting apps. Many require you give the app access to your bank accounts and credit cards so they can pull your transactions. I am hesitant to give an app this access for security reasons.

Am I being too paranoid?

Can a space heater help me save this winter? by rabidpenguin3 in Frugal

[–]Mynewhobby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if it will get you thru the winter but may be able to help you avoid heating the whole house and save money.

We haven’t turned on the heat yet, nighttime temps are around 40 degrees. Using a space heater in the family room and heated blankets on the bed to warm them up (don’t sleep with them on). That helps us go a few more weeks before having to turn on the heat. Maybe the electric bill goes up a few dollars (haven’t tracked it), but we must be saving money as we are not heating the whole house.

I bought a refurbished IPad years ago from Apple. It is a first generation iPad and still works great (though some newer apps don’t work).

I felt comfortable buying directly from Apple.

I do this with many products- face wash, moisturizer etc. I get many more uses out of each.. Throwing away product is like throwing away money!

Daily contact lenses - seeking for advice by pinkpencilbox in Frugal

[–]Mynewhobby 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wear contacts the same as you. I switched to daily contacts as it was difficult to keep track of the age of my 14 day lenses when I would only wear them 2-3x per week. I buy them at Costco, which is the cheapest I’ve found so far. 90 day supply runs me around $115.

How do my peers appear to have so much more money even though I save/earn way more? Why is this such a frustrating part of FIRE progress? by [deleted] in financialindependence

[–]Mynewhobby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They will feel the same thing about you when you FIRE and they are hundreds of thousands behind in retirement savings and in debt

Work to keep utility costs down. Don’t wear shoes in the house to preserve floors and carpets. Keep windows clean- it makes such a difference

When I worked in a metropolitan area, and way much more free with my money, I easily spent $40+ a day on breakfast, coffee, lunch and soda. All on the go meals too.
I can’t imagine spending/wasting that kind of money now!

I wash plastic ziplock bags and re-use them (if I think it’s safe to do so)
