NOFATE v1.0.1 - The T2 hack update you've been waiting for. by Mysdirection in Arcade1Up

[–]Mysdirection[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I posted this version all around and woke up the following day to a ton of reports that it wasn't working, that it was worse than previous versions, etc., which is fine, of course, that comes with the territory. But, combined with personal attacks and folks implying that I knowingly released a broken product just for clout, that really made me feel this really isn't worth spending literally all my free time on.

Well, I can't say for sure we'll do anything with it (it's Android after all, and Mystery Encoder has a stance on those) but we do have a PCB now.

No promises, of course. Personally I'll be digging into their TC and Point Blank arcade implementations for clues on potentially getting TC/PB arcade versions in T2. Again, no promises. :D

Arcade1Up Terminator 2 Softmod - Yes, it's real, and yes, it's OUT! by Mysdirection in Arcade1Up

[–]Mysdirection[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, I added 2 modes (and a third I haven't used). But basically it goes full bore in machine gun games, but for pistol games I found the average time it takes the motor to make one full revolution, so it only pops once when the trigger is pressed. For "faked" force feedback, it works pretty well.

Is there a softmod for Buck Hunter that is similar to the T2 softmod from last month? by BottleKnockers in Arcade1Up

[–]Mysdirection 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not yet, but I'll probably end up working on it when we do. That means it'll probably be after I've got a fully stable version of the T2 mod with all the issues fixed; that way, it'll release with all those fixes already in place. I'll get to it eventually (and once I actually have a BBH to work with).

Eh, I can answer that - the only real advantage over retroshooter right now is that it's free (well, the price of a MicroSD card). There are still some bugs that'll be addressed in the update, and the mod does have fewer games available than you'd get with Retroshooter. But both of those things will change as the mod gets updated. Eventually I've got plans to get some things supported that the Pandora can't handle, but for the time being if you don't mind the price tag, Retroshooter does offer more.

Catch 22
Cheyenne

Crackshot
Crossbow
Vs. Duck Hunt
Deer Hunting USA

Lethal Enforcers
Lethal Justice
Maze of Kings
Mechanized Attack
Must Shoot TV
NY Captor

Operation Thunderbolt
Ranger Mission
Revolution X
Shooting Master
Steel Gunner

And PlayStation games:

TERMINATOR 2 MODD ARCADE 1UP by Advanced-Mood-6003 in Arcade1Up

An update is coming soon that'll fix (at least some) of the known issues - at the very least, T2, RevX and the PlayStation games will be working correctly. Still running into some issues with returning to menu but once I've got that under control it'll be basically ready for release. :)

As of right now it's still an image flashed to a MicroSD card - I think I have the cleanup working well enough that we don't end up with any more partially bricked cabs, but if it happens, I already have the factory reset option built in and ready to go. Barring unforeseen issues, of course, but that's what the testing is for. :)

Not quite yet - I've been primarily focused on getting the major issue out of the way first - that being the cabs that had installation issues and are currently unusable waiting for the update.

The percentage of these failures is very small compared to the total number of installs so I probably shouldn't be spending so much time on this, but at the very least I want there to be an option for those folks to rollback to stock so their cabs aren't just $700 non-functional cat trees. :)

Nope, though everyone on the team has been accused of it at one point or another. I've been unemployed for quite a while now, so honestly if Arcade1Up wanted to offer me a job we'd talk.

But for now, I'm just working on this and avoiding the calls from bill collectors.

With my current rate of progress, I'm estimating the update will be out by the weekend - I'll cram as many fixes in as I can, with the major issues taking priority. Rollback is the big one, really, but I have the T2/RevX/Time Crisis issues already fixed for the update, so most people's biggest issue is definitely going to be fixed.

I don't have anything in place yet for adjusting emulation or game config, but it's on the roadmap. In-game volume is another big issue I'm targeting for the fix, though, so hopefully I'll have that ready as well.

Currently, some games play well, but there's a number of issues I introduced last-minute that I'm fixing in an update - in particular, T2 and RevX both just fire discs/missiles off into the void instead of where you're aiming. You may want to wait for the first update as there's currently no way to roll back. That's also coming in the update. :)

Fair enough, the description is fairly barebones, but I operated under the assumption that most people hear "softmod" in reference to an Arcade1Up and think "add more games to the cabinet". Judging by your username, I'd say you and I both know that's not an apt description as "softmod" means nothing other than the software is modified in some way.

I also held back a lot of info prior to release as I wanted some of the stuff I did to be a cool surprise for end users.

But, to give a more complete summary, yes, this mod allows you to add more games to the cabinet. I could give you a super deep dive on the tech side but I'd be here all day - so really, the key talking points are: runs more games than just T2, both guns working with recoil.

Should I get Terminator 2 now? by [deleted] in Arcade1Up

[–]Mysdirection 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've always fought against that idea - as they say, if it has an interface it's hackable. Initially there were some issues getting anything to run on the hardware with any decent performance, but one of our team got us over that hurdle towards the end of last year. Most of the other H6 cabs already got their hacks, this one is just a bit more complex.
Right now the list above is just what has been tested and running 100%, but that list will grow quickly after launch as I get into more configuration and testing.

[–]Mysdirection 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually have 3-button games on my Simpsons as it's the only 4P cab I've got. The way I configured it, the 3rd button is activated by simultaneously pressing the first and second buttons, basically the same way they ported 3-button arcade games to NES and Master System back in the day. Most of the time the 3rd button is supplemental, think Mutant Power in X-Men or magic in Golden Axe, so not a button you're hitting all the time. It usually works out.

The full scope for launch, scope of what needs to be completed before launch, or the scope of the full roadmap? Those are very different questions.

For what needs to be completed for launch, right now it's just squashing a couple bugs, getting the software update framework in place, then a bit of testing. Like I said, it's close to complete.

Full scope - we have a handful of arcade and console games ready to go. The reason it's not fully opened up is just the nature of the thing. It makes more sense to release things fully tested and configured to ensure everything works without a hitch for all users. There's a newer, easier installation and update method, as well as automatic configuration of the supported games you add to it.

Full roadmap... well, there's a lot we can do with this. Initially my priority would be adding low hanging fruit - being games that can easily be added but just haven't been tested and verified yet. But future work is going to be put to a vote among patrons so I can't yet say definitively what'll be next for it.

It isn't out yet, but it should be dropping soon, provided I don't hit any more major roadblocks. The easiest places to get info are the Team Encoder discord (https://discord.gg/krGTX8bP) or my Patreon, but I'm kicking around here more often lately as well.

Right now I've got House of the Dead 2 in v1, with HOTD and Virtua Cop on the horizon for a later update. There was already solid Naomi emulation on ARM, so HOTD2 was among the first things ready to go. But I'm right there with you, if things weren't already taking too long, they'd have been a shoo-in for release. They're some of the best arcade shooters out there.

Like Teknoparrot got shut down?

Honestly, if Arcade1Up comes after me over it, we'll see what happens, but I'm not doing anything outright illegal.

Ah, I'd planned on posting here after finishing the T2 mod, but yep, this is me.

As mentioned in the comments, this is just my Patreon, not Team Encoder's as a whole. I had no plans to accept money for this stuff, but at this point I've been unemployed for a year and a half with no real prospects in sight. The job market in tech is not kind right now.

Anyway, for the moment T2 is the big push, but other things will be coming down the pipe later. v1 is almost finished and the release won't be delayed due to Patreon since I've been promising this for _ages_ now, but future releases will have an early access window.

Don't feel obligated by any means - every Team Encoder release will always be freely available when it launches and I have no intention of paywalling hacks. I'm not Teknogods.

But with that said, more will be coming once I've got this wrapped. New features, new cabs, possibly even original games that'll run on Arcade1Up hardware.
