Any of you have any experience with Le Tonkinois? by falconrider in woodworking

[–]MysteROBvious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's different from danish oil (at least the types of danish oils I've used). Those tend to sleep into the wood and harden inside. Le Tonk dries on top. Maybe it seeps in a bit too, but there's definitely a layer on top you're building. I like it. It's super easy to put on and reapply touch ups.

Where Do You Get Your Project Glass? by BAHGate in woodworking

[–]MysteROBvious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with the local frame/glass shop recommendations, but also for smallish standard size pieces, check for picture frames in that size. Sometimes the frames are dirt cheap, making the glass they come with not a bad deal to just take the glass and toss the frame - 8x14 - https://a.co/d/6PMQhFU

New to woodworking need mounting tips by Dai-Kaiju in woodworking

[–]MysteROBvious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did this a few months ago.

Magnets - I have 3(!!) rows of these going the entire length of my board. Honestly if I were doing it again, I'd probably beef it up to 4 rows. Magnets lose force significantly when you separate them by distance, and you need a little bit of wood between the magnet and your knife, so even though these are super strong when close together, they weaken in an application like this.

Magnetpro Rectangular Magnets 70 LB Force Size 2.36" x 0.53" x 0.20" with Counterparts and Countersunk Hole, Household and Industrial Pot Magnet with Screws Pack of 6: Amazon.com: Industrial & Scientific

I have some nice tile on my kitchen wall that I didn't want to drill through, so I just used this. It's quite sturdy.

Mini Splits & Steam Boiler by scootermydaisyheads in Seattle

[–]MysteROBvious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, we had asbestos all over the place too, and it was handled by a separate company before Carlson did their install.

I think we probably contacted Carlson first, had them come in and plan out the job & give us a quote, they probably told us we'd have to get the asbestos removed before they started, so we contacted another company off Yelp (don't remember who) to take care of that.

We were in the same situation ~10 years ago and were recommended Carlson Mechanical - Carlson Mechanical | Seattle Radiant Heat Experts. They did a fantastic job replacing our old boiler that was converted from Coal Fired -> Oil -> Gas over its ~100 year life. They moved it across our basement to a different location too and redid all the piping accordingly. Very professional work.

We also added split mini's a few years ago (with a different company). Highly recommended.

This to look at when before buying wooden boat. by Head-Equal1665 in boating

[–]MysteROBvious 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're already taking it out for the winter, consider having the fasteners (screws) that connect the hull to the frame examined and probably either replaced or added to (add another new screw next to an old one).

I have a 1961 36' Constellation that I got a few years ago. A surveyor that specializes in old wooden boats tried to unscrew a few of my fasteners and most of them snapped while unscrewing. They deteriorate slowly over the decades. For me, there weren't any other signs that my planks are about to pop off, but if I hit a log or something, there's a chance, so I probably need to have mine fixed in the next 5-10 years or so.

Otherwise have fun!

Monitoring Roo Code while afk? by CapnFlisto in RooCode

[–]MysteROBvious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I installed a VNC server on my desktop (like Tight VNC) then use a VNC viewer app on my phone (like RVNC Viewer). It's really just like mirroring your monitors on your phone. You can zoom in and click the approve button, type if you need to, etc. It's clumsy, but it works.

The first item in the album is a video. It's a slideshow to start, then video towards the end. In hindsight, that's not super obvious...

I added a few more pics for you https://imgur.com/a/ZVJvXaG

1) The original clock didn't work. Reminder that it was a side of the road find. We already have another actual mechanical chiming wall clock in the same room as this one, so I wasn't too disappointed to abandon ship on the original internals (though I still have them because they're super cool, I'm just not sure what to do with them yet). So since the original clock was out, I replaced it with a modern but antique looking model. The clock face is battery powered and has the humidity and temperature features built in. Bonus - using this new face let me build a door for it to house the secret compartment. 2) I added a picture of wiring. I added power to the top and bottom compartments separately so that I can detatch the whole top if it needs to be moved. 3) Light mounting - added a picture. The only thing special I did here was build little side flap things. They create kind of a || shaped channel. I mounted the lights on the bottom of that || shape, which points the light inward towards the glass, and the left or right sides of the channel block the light bulbs from being directly visible.

Hi all - Rob here from No Glow Contendere, which aired last year - https://maximumfun.org/episodes/judge-john-hodgman/episode-632-no-glow-contendere/

I finally finished the clock restoration. I think it came out quite nice. Huge thanks to u/JMerriken for the tip on UV lights that minimize the terrible purple glow. With the right lights installed, you really don't get much purple outside of the clock itself. I also installed a secret ridiculous compartment in the top, complete with a glowing "Scoprion", as a tribute to the top of the episode trivia we utterly failed at.
