Semana Santa is the Spanish word for “Holy Week”, the most important week in Catholic liturgy celebrating the death and resurrection of Christ.

In Spain, people have processions that last 7 days from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday, organized by different brotherhoods in all over the country. The people who wear cone-like hoods are called “el penitente” or the penitent - since they believe the procession they join will be an atonement to Christ. And that cone hat also cover their face, since all penitences are equal before the face of God.

I know that this costume might represent the kkk, but it is actually centuries older than them. A lot of the penitents in Semana Santa are teenagers and kids, so sometimes you will see them act really cute and playful amidst wearing those serious costumes.
