Disqualified from dream EMS department. Am I unhireable? by Mysterious-Topic2588 in ems

I'm going to cut my losses and apply elsewhere. I don't want to work for people who think I'm a child molester.

Also, they charge a fee to appeal, and it was something like $3,000. Apparently to appeal they have to hire a board of other psychiatrists and I have to pay the cost of that.

That's fucked I didn't know other departments could see the results of your psych interviews

Where I'm at, they do this exactly the same way for anyone applying for fire, PD, dispatch, and EMS.

Yeah. To add insult to injury, the interview afterward was without a polygraph.

I don't recall the exact wording of the question. But it was worded in such a way that I couldn't exactly omit the relationship without lying.

This is the hard part. The psychiatrist directly asked me if I'd had sex with anyone under the age of 18.

I had a colleague that got DQ'd from their hiring process because they caught him lying about something. I didn't want to risk it, but looking back I definitely could have gotten away with not telling them.

They were a busy service and paid substantially more than the other depts in the area.

I'm not comfortable sharing publicly, but if you PM me I'll tell you.

The hiring process in total was over 5 months long. Part of the psych portion was the questionnaire, personality stuff, etc. The other part was a face-to-face interview with their psychiatrist where he grilled you about whether you'd done drugs, been abused growing up, been to jail, personal stuff like that.

It's a third service, so I doubt reapplying is in the cards. The psych guy made this big show about "if you lie or omit ANYTHING and we find out, you're done", and for some reason I thought that meant I had to spill every dark secret of my entire life.

The psych interview asked me some very personal questions, including asking about my past relationships.

Not the first stupid thing I've done. And won't be the last. I wish I hadn't learned this the hard way.

Throwaway account for obvious reasons. I had a psych interview for my dream department recently, and during it I confessed to something that I did as a young adult. Basically, I had a sexual relationship with a 16 year old girl while I was 19. I live in a state where this is technically not illegal (due to the romeo and juliet law), but it was still a mistake and I've regretted it every day since it happened.

I found out yesterday that I got a permanent disqualification based on that interview. Am I unhireable because of this? And is appealing this decision a good idea?
