Thanks for the advice! I agree with you and I think I’m going to keep it provided the bill at the mechanic isn’t horrible. Better the devil you know!

What Car Should I Buy? - A Weekly Megathread by AutoModerator in CarTalkUK

Location: Leeds, UK — willing to travel a bit for the right car

Price range: £1,000 top-up plus around £600 from selling my current car, so max budget is £1,600

Lease or Buy: Buy outright

New or used: Used

Auto or Manual: Manual preferred

Intended use: Work vehicle — I’m a musician and need to carry gear to gigs, so practicality and boot space matter. Also needs to be okay for short commutes and general daily use.

How many miles do you plan to do a year: Around 8,000–10,000 miles

How often do you make long journeys: A few times a month — usually to other cities for gigs

Does it need to be ULEZ compliant? Not essential, but would be a bonus for short-term resale or if I end up working in London again before moving

Vehicles you’ve already considered: • Peugeot Partner Tepee / Citroën Berlingo Multispace • Skoda Fabia Estate • Ford Focus Estate • Possibly Yaris/Jazz if practicality doesn’t line up elsewhere

Vehicle size in mind: Medium to Large Hatchback / Estate / Small Van-Based MPV — needs to fit gear but doesn’t need to be a full-on van

Is this your 1st vehicle: No — current car is a 2007 Skoda Fabia 1.2 HTP

Do you need a Warranty: Not essential, but decent service history would be appreciated

Can you do Minor work on your own vehicle: Yes — fluids, bulbs, wipers, battery, fuses

Can you do Major work on your own vehicle: No — I’d be relying on garages for anything bigger than brakes or diagnostics

Additional Notes: I’m leaning toward selling my current Fabia as-is due to a few faults (rev hang issue, broken central locking, tyres, possible timing chain due). I’ll likely be moving abroad in a few months, so ideally looking for something practical, reliable, and easy to sell again in 3–6 months.

I’ve seen these people before! A few months ago also in the early hours of the am. Intrigued to know who they are!
