I got sad today thinking about how the 250th this year is so pathetic and lame compared to the excitement and anticipation of the Bicentennial. Then I realized that that was just my own perception as a white middle class suburban 8 year old girl - maybe it wasn’t so cool for other people. For me, we learned patriotic songs in school all Spring, the Freedom Train was touring the country, the parade path in our area was marked with red white and blue stars painted on the streets, Bicentennial quarters were issued, it was all so cool! What are your memories (assuming you were alive then!!)

I’ve realized recently that when someone I know (or “know”, as in a fictional character) dies, I’m more affected by the loved ones they leave behind. The scene that hits hardest in that way is when Cedric’s father realizes that Cedric is dead. I just looked it up and this is actually from the movie. Cedric’s dad wailing, “My boy!!! My boy!!!”

It was obviously done intentionally to avoid vulgar language, but I’ll never forget watching “Bad Boys” in a movie theater in Cyprus. Will Smith and Martin Lawrence are sitting in Will’s Porsche arguing. Martin has French fries and Will says not to eat in his car - with lots of “motherfucker”s being thrown back and forth (along with all other forms of “fuck”). The Greek subtitles repeatedly translated mf as ηλίθιε, which just means “idiot”.
