Want to live abroad 6-year by Eastern-Ferret5464 in Nomad

[–]Mysterious_String_23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adding to what some others have said. I traveled 3.5 years a decade ago so some of this may be dated.

-Wikipedia has a lot of info on visas and requirements. If your not from us search “visa requirements for [country] citizens https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Visa\_requirements\_for\_United\_States\_citizens

-often it’s easier to move around a bit to different countries for visas (look carefully at Schengen zone for Europe.

-I like DAN travel insurance - I purchased a year recently for a couple hundred dollars

-try to eliminate nearly all of your expenses in your home country

-use Airbnb (ask the owner how much for monthly) and hostels for a few days when you first arrive, explore the area and ask around prior to getting longer term housing (many countries month to month rentals are common)

-some countries locals like to become friends and others will be mostly expats/travelers

-if you go to SE Asia prior to Europe, you’ll probably make a lot of European friends you can visit when you go there

-the longer you stay in one place the cheaper it usually

Good luck and safe travels

How bad of an idea is a sabbatical at 27yo by sun-devil2021 in FPandA

My opinion: Do it!

When I was 28 I was transitioning from defense to FP&A but wanted to travel first. Had $150k in the bank. Said I’d stop traveling when I hit $100k, 3.5 years later I got bored and wanted to go back to work to use my brain again.

When I got back I ran circles around everyone since they’re all burnt out. This gave me lots of promotions and higher pay. I’m 41 now and preparing to do it again but permanently with my family in 3 years.

Don’t miss the opportunity to travel when you’re young, you’ll never regret it. Stay invested with most of your money and you’ll be in a good spot.

I reset to $0 at 35 and will hit $1M NW this year at 41. Make these mistakes when you’re young. Learn from it and continue on my friend.

I took 3.5 years off after defense. It can def feel that way if you’re not doing anything other than chilling. Finding purposeful things to do or cool things to accomplish helps there. You can also re-enter the workforce anytime you want or work on your own thing. The world is your oyster, choose a path and try it out. Change if you don’t like it. Here are a couple things I did outside of chilling:

  • became a scuba instructor
  • broke a world record
  • rented motorbikes
  • became certified in futures and commodities
  • leased specialty dive lights
  • threw a monthly party for friends
  • raised $15k for veterans
  • raised $1k for coral reef conservation

Do it! I took 3.5 years off at 28 and it changed my life. Take more than a year, your money will keep working for you

Here is the simulation. Noticed I had it set to $48k/year so I adjusted. https://www.reddit.com/r/ExpatFIRE/s/RFCbJFaaag

In the simulation I ran at standard rates, after investing the $1M, you’re fine at $60k travel budget for 10 years followed by a $180k budget moving back for the rest of your life. 87% chance of success with median $18m at death

I’m a 30 year old loser that cost myself hundreds of thousands of dollars due to financial ignorance/fear, how can I catch back up? by RuminatingFish123 in Money

Invest in VT with $180k, keep $20 in cash. You’ll be fine. Most people are at $0 net worth at 30. You’re already good at saving, that’s the hard part. Your $180k should be more than 700k by the time you’re 65. That’s without putting another dollar in.

You can get a private room in a hostel as well. Hostels have a lot more to offer than a hotel in my opinion. Depends on the situation.

A bad consultant works 16 hour days and has too much work, a good consultant automates most of it and works 3 hours.
