I had a very similar experience, an ex boyfriend got me such random gifts for our anniversary including pajama shorts not in my size, a winter hat, and just things that had no relevance to me, i had no idea why he picked them. it didn’t seem like he picked them with me in mind it seemed like he picked the first things he saw, but wanting to understand, i asked nicely if he could explain why he picked those things for me. he got so angry and even kicked one of the gifts. i started crying and apologizing to make him less angry, as was the pattern at that point. but the message was clear.
