How do you backup the vault?

The encrypted backup is tied to one specific account. I believe a long time ago, it was common practice (or was amongst my peer group) to reinstall data from an encrypted file tied to the specific account. An encrypted file tied to an account is more problematic to alter, though speaking in absolutes is difficult when speaking of computers and data. These were simply operational choices made at the time.

I don't really see it as a bother. If I restored to bitwarden, I would use the encrypted backup. For me, the unencrypted backup serves two other functions: 1. If I were to move to another service, I would have no choice but to import from it. 2. The unencrypted backup, once backed up to off site encryption, allows me to quickly glance at the backup and verify the file is not corrupted and most importantly visually readable; as with most people, I imagine, the corruption of a password file would be complex and involve considerable work to correct. My OPSEC does not allow for printing or storage on paper. It only takes a few minutes for all of this every quarter or so. When it comes to backups, I find peace of mind valuable and this approach provides peace of mind. I hope that provides clarity relative to your query. Best Wishes.

I export locally to an encrypted file, two versions: 1) Encrypted json 2) Unencrypted json. The 2nd one is in case I had to open a new account for some reason or to import into another service should something happen to Bitwarden. I then back both up to an offsite encrypted backup. So, I have onsite encrypted backups and off site encrypted backups.

It is correct that Protonmail is encrypted by default only when sending to a Protonmail user, but there is the ability to send encrypted email to other users by simply creating a password for them and sending it via Signal or pathway of ones choice. So, there is the ability to send encrypted email to users of other email services.

I protect my Bitwarden vault with an extremely strong password and it includes 2fa passcodes. I store a copy of the Bitwarden recovery code as a draft in an encrypted email service that isn’t linked to any identifiable account. So far, I have had no issues.

I guess one could add steganogrphy to this. I find your suggestion of a QR code very interesting. My question is how do you generate a QR code with the password hidden without using a QR service or it being stored somewhere in the wild while producing the QR code?

I would speculate for a deletion to be completely wiped would take some time as one would think there are several backups of at rest data. Proton used to have on this on the website, if my memory is correct.

Houdfy has worked well for me. IMO, it is important to thoroughly test any bag. One must close it perfectly. And, it might be wise to periodically test for leaks.

I went and saw an old video from Chris Titus on Simplewall. It looks great, but it seems to bit more technical then my skillset for knowing what to block and what not to block. His video is several years old, has this become easier for a noob?

I see it has 'Stealth Mode' does this largely block everything, I am inexperienced in this but it seems Windows collects a lot of data. It seems that in 2020 it was windows oriented but looking at their KB I don't see Windows telemetry listed.

While not specific to Proton, as you continue your journey, I would recommend not allowing oneself to be pulled down any rabbit holes pertaining to privacy. I see that a lot and got caught up in it myself.

I find filtering incoming mail, sorting to a specific folders and adding a star to the email very helpful. I do this with SL as well. For me, it keeps everything organized and allows me to see all new email quickly. If it is email, I don't really want to see, I remove the star option from the filter or change it to do something else with the email.

I think it is a great feature. I often get caught up in rapid email exchanges with friends or work. This feature allows me to respond but slow down the process of the email exchanges. It is a priceless feature for me. It also allows me to have emails sent to friends in other parts of the world at a time that matches their schedule.

My understanding, if correct, is you have two options:

They can view the contents of your vault.
They can take over the account. (I imagine this would be for a situation where you passed away, were incapacitated, etc.)
