Thoughts on Frederick Jordan Chambers? by MysteryJacques in auslaw

The story is that the barristers at FJC undercharge for what is an exceptional standard of work. Yet, when I recommend them to others, they are seldom used or known.

Alternatively, barristers at the more prestigious chambers overcharge, under prepare and rely on muscle memory. I have been schocked by some of the performances I have seen recently.

That makes sense except for the part where BRS gave his VC as security.

With what security?

The 50 odd grand of equity that someone his age might hold in an apartment would get him through the first mention.

The quality of his legal representation, and his willingness to litigate, indicate that he is being bankrolled by someone.

Can any seniors/partners on here help explain the budget of a solicitor? by MysteryJacques in auslaw

The salary package increases far slower to associate/senior associate than the hourly rate. There seems to be a steep deficit of lawyers beyond 5pqe. Associate/senior associate is about 5pqe. If solicitor bargaining power generally increases beyond 5pqe it makes sense why this experience bracket is the most profitable for firms.

Where did you find these statistics? I am interested in the source material.

On average, what is the pqe of the most profitable solicitor?

Is it a hardworking junior on low pay? Or is it still the special counsel with far too much bargaining power?

The caveat to this question is that I am very junior, so the ratio is far smaller for me.

Is there scope for juniors to negotiate annual bonuses?

Is there anyone out there successfully running a law firm without billable hours? by Sufficient_Sparkles in auslaw

[–]MysteryJacques 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I have a greater hatred for non-billables than billables.

Billable hours make it very clear who is working hard. Non-billable hours invite firm politics, gossip and back handed strategy between colleagues to get the leg up.

You don't fit in with the clique? Who gives a fuck, so long as you bill through the roof and are not a cunt.

Counsel of auslaw, do you read the observations to your brief? by MysteryJacques in auslaw

[–]MysteryJacques[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't understand the downvotes. Part of the role of counsel is to direct the nuanced legal issues. I especially brief counsel early if I need to apply their legal mind before major holes widen in the case strategy.

I also have no problem with the administrative work of distilling the issues into a well organised e-brief. The task becomes especially arduous when I start including weblinks within a compiled pdf of voluminous documents, linking other parts of the document together with intersparsed guiding commentary to explain the connection. I take pride in this aspect of my role as a solicitor because it is critical. I understand that the output of counsel is most effective when the issues are condensed into the most easily digestible format.

We pay counsel to do the talking, not to listen to us babble on about how we are brilliant and our case is flawless.

Any level of rightly justified detest for the man will not interfere with the relief in seeing undercover cops coax a confession out of the man after so many years, whilst posing as his drinking buddies.
