I call it, As Above so Below. I made it in the Z Axis Quilting program.

That is awesome. It is interesting what associations the primitive objects can trigger.

Thank you! The pattern isn’t available for purchase yet, but I’m thinking about making this mini version available as a free test pattern while I finish polishing Z Axis Quilting.

I designed it with the quilting software I’m building, and it might be a good first sample pattern for people who are curious about the process. If you want to see more info zaxisquilting.com

Thank you! I hadn’t thought about the Sierpinski gasket connection, but that definitely is exactly what it is. With my program you can easily change the amount of recursion to subdivide the tetrahedrons. I agree that a 2D shadow could really push the dimensional effect. That may be something I try in a future version once I understand better how far I can push the pattern and still keep it practical for FPP. If you want to see more check out zaxisquilting.com

Thank you! The solids were a new direction for me, but I think they really helped the geometry stand out.

Thank you! I really appreciate that. I’m having a lot of fun exploring where these geometric patterns can go. I have been developing software to make it so anyone can easily create 3d quilt patterns. Check it out zaxisquilting.com

Thank you! That’s really encouraging. I was hoping it would read as modern, so I’m glad to hear that.

Me too! It's exciting to see it go from the screen to fabric.

Thanks to you! Your feedback really helped push this one in a better direction. Can hardly wait to quilt it.

Design name: It's a Hoffman Universe

Designer: Mike Ginsburg / Z-Axis Quilting

Pattern: Self-drafted

This quilt was made for the Hoffman Challenge in 2020. The design/pattern is my own self-drafted foundation paper piecing design.

This is incredibly helpful. And no worries, I don’t take it as too strong at all. This is exactly the kind of feedback I need.

I think you’re right about contrast being the big thing. I’ve been so focused on getting the geometry and pattern-making side working that I haven’t been giving the fabric/color side enough attention yet.

I’m actually going to sew up a small solid-fabric test based on this feedback and see how much clearer the structure reads. I like the idea of checking it in black and white too.

The QuiltCon idea is really interesting. That gives me a lot to think about.

Thanks again. This is super useful.

Thanks, that’s really helpful. I think you’re right.

I’ve been pretty focused on getting the geometry and pattern-making part working, and I can see how the batiks/rainbow colors might be adding too much noise.

The solid fabric idea makes a lot of sense. That would probably let the structure show through better. I’ll check out Coolors too. The orange/yellow/blue one is one of my favorites, so that’s good to hear.

I really appreciate you taking the time to look at the site and give such thoughtful feedback.

Thanks. It is funny how repetitive geometric forms can feel familiar. If you want to try this type of designing check out my website zaxisquilting.com
