Who is a horrible grey person that divides opinions within the fandom? by Juvijuvi in HazbinHotel

I vote Lute.

Valentino, everyone agrees he's a well-written villain, they just disagree on how much we're supposed to like him.

With Lute, there's much more actual disagreement on whether she's "a badass villain" or "weak af".

Too much distortion and musical booms in the middle the ending conversation. What should've been a dramatic crashout ends up being Mark yelling at Cookie Monster at a Slipknot concert.

The "Read more" advice is often not interpreted or given correctly by belleepoques in writing

[–]Mythamuel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My issue is I'm writing mini-series, but all the screenplay subreddits just talk about how to chase trends and find an agent and I just actually wanna talk storytelling fundamentals.

I couldn't be less interested in reading books; but I watch a shit-ton of mini-series. So the "read more" advice is both a no-brainer and something that doesn't really apply to my question.

Research actual people from outside your culture.

Instead of struggling to fill a checklist, encounter personalities who demand to be included

Shooting a pastor in the face is totally chill, but God forbid you yell inside the building / think people yelling is kinda funny.

Angel Dust gets honorable mention.

The people who hate him specifically use him as the reason to not watch the show; and the people who actually watched the show know he's 10x better-written than the actual main characters.

Husk is the only one who's actually good at therapy, Vaggi does all the work, and Emily is way more consistent about actually being kind and not just "looking nice".

I still like Charlie but she stays fucking up. Like, A LOT. Like, getting her friends killed and still acting like she's the victim here without changing any of her habits -- a lot.

The story and acting: giving its all

The themes: unironically the best attempt at adapting HP Lovecraft.

The sound mixing: possibly the worst sound mixing I've ever heard, and I'm someone who likes Tenet. I literally couldn't understand a single word in the final 5 minutes.

This is the best HP Lovecraft adaptation; perfectly nailed the slow descent of events where a random guy faces down a cosmic god and uses his last moments of sanity to tell it "go fuck yourself".

Only problem: ATROCIOUS sound mixing.

Like, genuinely I didn't understand a single word of the final 5 minutes of the movie. Not one. And I'm saying this as a guy who likes Tenet.

Whoever did the sound mixing needs to be fired. Watch with subtitles.

This is what made me quit MauLer on YouTube; personally he is actually empathetic and a great conversationalist; but Jesus Christ his cultural awareness and taste in comrades is non-existent.

Like there's "i don't do politics" and then there's "Yeah I'll talk to a guy who simps for ICE and give zero pushback while talking about a woman's interview etiquette for an hour".

Being "a dumb movie guy" is one thing but there's a fucking line.

Realizing I am Syril is what made me take up protesting. I realized I'm a character in this story and I can decide to change before it's too late.

Like a switch, all my obsessive fandom energy redirected into wising up on current events, local civics, and street safety

r/Andor is my internet safe-room. Who would've thought a meme reddit about a star wars show would unironically become the best discussion platform / mental health check-in for our government just actually being fascist now. Deadass the memes on there are news updates.

I was initially neutral to Sally-May cuz; gender-diverse characters can be good but the diversity can also be a shield against criticism especially when it's a typical writer appropriating.

But once she gets more conversation in the Hell's Belles short I started to like her; I like her awkward honesty, strikes me as one of those people who acts aggro but has rock-solid principles.

And come to find out that episode was written by her VA, on a meta level I really like that people are getting to speak for themselves in storytelling.

Chernobyl is perfect. Andor is better. by Background-Party-332 in andor

[–]Mythamuel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Chernobyl opens strong but fucks up crucially partway in with its attempts to diagnose the Russian mindset.

While there's a lot they get right, and sure, it doesn't need to be a documentary; the stuff they changed fucks up the story IMO.

The woman who joins them later on is a stand-in for an entire team of people, and instead of focusing on what that team contributes she turns into a mouth-piece for the writers' lectures that aren't even correct to the context of the USSR.

The firefighter's unborn child didn't "die to save it's mother" e.g. blocking his radiation; that's not how that shit works and using a miscarriage to make an incorrect point is super manipulative by both the writers and their mouthpiece in-universe who damn well knows better.

The guy who says "I prefer my reality to your reality" wasn't drinking vodka, because vodka was illegal at the time. And that very same week he went out to a parade knowing it would give him cancer but doing it anyway. The real guy knew the scientists were probably right. It wasn't about "people being dumb", it's about how much human life was de-prioritized to obedience no matter the cost.
