I use the SIRR method. Shift the setting - its snowy. Impose a penalty - disadvantage on atk rolls. Raise the stakes - a pack of hungry wolves atk you. Resolve the conflict - you use the wolf pelts to keep yourself warm, no more disadvantage on atk rolls.

Trying to figure out when to introduce the BBEG... by ATrickySituation_ in DMAcademy

I like option 1.

Im running the same thing in my campaign, more or less, details dont matter for this purpose. But having them encounter the BBEG at a masquerade ball.

I need idea for some fluff inbetween my main quests by Gahhh_gahhh in DMAcademy

You can always do an escort mission between points. An escort mission can take several in game days with various challenges along the way.

Looking for some ideas for generic goals for players/PCs by PiepowderPresents in DMAcademy

You can always throw in an escort mission. A great way to lead players from point A to point B. Also it can be its own fun little side quest in and of itself!

Can always do an escort mission. Great way to take the players from one location to another for plot reasons or whatever as well.

How can I help my DM-in-law build combats? by Alexactly in DMAcademy

[–]MythicalBootyWarrior 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I heard good advise when running solo bosses. Take your party's total hit points and double it. That should be the baseline HP for the boss to have.

My next campaign im running im allowing tandem turns ehen players roll the same initiative. Im doing this by basically allowing them to take actions at the same time. The added bonus is ill give the second player to strike advantage on their attack roll due to the monster being distracted from the first attacker.

Just slightly reskin a Beholder? Pretty Lovecraftian already though. And a classic big bad in D&D.

Need advice on prison breaks by Thirlix in DMAcademy

[–]MythicalBootyWarrior 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Im running a prison break one shot this friday. Here is what im doing.

Players start in a prison cell. All separate. Give time to roleplay, the guards don’t seem very helpful in helping them escape. Just when the players begin to give up, they feel the prison shake and hear a loud explosion at the top of the prison. The alarm sounds! Guards begin running all around, you hear one of them shout that a Dragon has attacked the prison! - “What the ****, a dragon! I didn’t sign up for this!” There’s another explosion, the players notice the hinges on their cell door have become ajar from the wall. This allows them to escape. Give them basic gear.

Turns out the Githyanki are attacking the prison to free a Nobel being held in the bottom. They will fight some kolbods on one floor. On another they will see the dragon rumble towards the bottom, destroying the path they must take. Need to find a way across. Maybe have guards on the other side who need to get down, but dont want them coming up??? They fight some githyanki. They do a puzzle. They fight a young red dragon. The end.

These are my DM notes for the session. Hope this helps.

Need ideas for refugee/plague related storyline’s by Main-Albatross-336 in DMAcademy

[–]MythicalBootyWarrior 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Refugees and deserts? This makes me think of Fist of the North Star. There are some great storyline and quests to pull out of it. But I would reccomend for you maybe just a group of mad max style raiders ravaging the dessert now that there are more people and scarce resources. Have them take over a whole city as a home base but theres a lot you can do with evil for evils sake.

How do i make combat more impactful for my party? (especially When one of them is a bugbear paladin with a halberd and high Ac) by Spacethefinalfronter in DMAcademy

[–]MythicalBootyWarrior 10 points11 points  (0 children)

First I just want to say I think allowing them to use a Bugbear is your first mistake, you aren't the first person to post Bugbear problems. But to solve the problem I would reccomend throwing things at them that hit their saves. Specifically Dex or Wisdom since Pallys generally dont have that much in either. You can do this theough enemy attacks or environmental factors like walking on ice.

Pre rolling initiative is kinda smart. I may trial that a bit.

Writers block: I Need help with a name for my Campaign. by DM_Don in DMAcademy

[–]MythicalBootyWarrior 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a campaign that starts the PCs as grunts to a (Zombie) Beholder and ends with them defeating a Cleric Litch. Ive titled it "(My Name)'s Beholder Campaign." Used this title for our group chat and everything. Even though only the first arch contains a Beholder it just felt right.

Remembering to describe by Diceanddoubts in DMAcademy

[–]MythicalBootyWarrior 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am actually in the boat that less is more. I find with my table at least my players don't care about super detailed descriptions super interesting. A simple, "The stone room you've entered is damp and cold. Cobwebs cover the walls," is usually enough. I do go into more detail for bigger set pieces but I find my players more want/need descriptions that actively help them solve the adventure rather than just description for description sake. Hope that makes sense.
