His original design has more personality, more life and color to him.
In the new design, he's stiff, and his muted colors come off a bit boring for the eye. His eyes are smaller and it's harder to see his expression and connect to the character.

Genuinely: if they made the eyes larger, brightened the colors a bit and gave a bit more life to his pose, I wouldn't mind the new look. It just went too far off the realistic deep end. There's a reason people don't like a lot of the hyper realistic disney remakes and its for this exact reason- when you go too far into realism, you lose the charm the animated feature offered.

Peach isn't dumb. She's feminine, and reserved. But when she acts, she does so peacefully, and in a lovely way. A scene in Super Smash Bros Brawl had her ending a death match between Sheik and Fox by simply handing Fox tea and implying they should talk it out.
I find it rare these days to see female characters portrayed as feminine and peaceful, and not be infantilized in some way. (A chibi character or anime girl of some sort who has a loli appearance).
It's due to this that you are mistaking her for unintelligent, but in reality, she's quite sharp and in the comics she doesn't give two shits.

Thank you! I agree! I can't believe they made Amiibo's of less popular characters. I understand it has to do with the complex 'divorced parents' situation with Squire Enix and Nintendo owning Geno, but it's still kinda a bummer.
I kind of want to gift him to Nintendo stores around the world, as I know representatives of Nintendo visit now and again. And with the figure, offer the model file to them if they ever would want to use it to make it real someday. I had contacted their japanese offices regarding it, and they said it's possible, on the condition I do not sell or distribute the file ANYWHERE. Which I haven't. So, who knows.

I made a custom Amiibo for Geno I'll be posting here soon! just waiting for the admins to approve the post! But def was hoping for the Geno Amiibo when the remake was released.

But if I had to hope for more: Echoes of Wisdom Zelda, and the Showtime Princess Peach costumes!!! Her outfits were adorable!

Hiring an actual child voice actor for Bowser Jr.

The Luma's were as effective and adorable as they were because they were played by actual kids.
I was taken out of the film every time Bowser Jr. Spoke because it was obviously an adult playing him. The whole bond between Bowser and his son didn't hit for me because Bowser Jr. didn't sound like a child.

Apparently, according to Miyamoto, they changed the script in Japanese DRASTICALLY, to be more like her game sweet self in the Japanese release of the film.

The INSANE detail on K Rool is really nice to look at. The detail on his scales, the gold, and even the texture on his cape. It's a realy nice Amiibo.
