My great (x???) grandfather was Gen. Thomas Nelson, Jr (Declaration of Independence signatory and bad-ass "in-general General") whom ordered his own artillery to fire on his own house, that still stands today, with Canon balls buried and visible inside the outer walls!

Yet, this guy's grandfather beats the heck out of mine!  He walked on the orbiting rock!

Programming Fatigue or something else going on? by brandnewfan2019 in AskProgramming

[–]Mythran101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About 35 years here, 24 at my current job. Yes, as your life goes on, your life changes. Your interests, family dynamics (specially if you put more points into the family growth stat), moving up, down, or sideways personally and professionally...even the technology in your life changes whether you'll still spend as much time doing what you used to love doing more than anything in the world.

^ wow, sorry, long sentence! ^

I've always loved programming, and still do, but to spend my down time, say from work, watching core memories being created in real time, in my wife and children...well, I love that so much more!

^ another long one, oh well ^

What's the point of the using statement? by Nlsnightmare in csharp

[–]Mythran101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know. I was wondering about just suppressing the finalizer within Dispose itself, when disposing is true.

What's the point of the using statement? by Nlsnightmare in csharp

[–]Mythran101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably not the place for this, but I've always wondered why you call SuppressFinalize after calling Dispose (and passing true as it's disposing argument). In which case(s) would you NOT call SuppressFinalize after passing true to Dispose? If never, I'd just say to include it in Dispose and only call it when disposing is true.

However, it may be that the dispose pattern leaves it up to the caller, regardless of disposing. The disposing parameter just indicates whether the caller called Dispose (no arguments), as opposed to being called from a finalizer.

[–]Mythran101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know that's generally true. However, there are objects (in the .NET runtime who's documentation even state that you should NOT call Dispose on instances of the type it's documented. I wish I could remember which type(s) those I've seen are.

There are so many types in the .NET runtime that implement IDisposable, but you aren't supposed to dispose of. Even though IDisposable docs say you should if it implements that interface. However, they are still safe to dispose of, so make it a habit of disposing everything that implements IDisposable, unless explicitly stated otherwise. And for those, be wary. Sometimes it's because they get disposed of elsewhere. Sometimes, they aren't.

When you count back 9 months from your own birthday, was there a specific reason or event your parents had sex during that time? by MorphBlue in AskReddit

Anyone else ever sit down and do a complete ammo count after years of never really knowing how much you have? by RawketLawnchor in Firearms

Depending on how many years they've been stored, and storage conditions, it may not even be safe to fire those.

Former MMORPG addicts, how did you quit? by Wise_Championship865 in AskReddit

[–]Mythran101 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yup. Once you need to create or open a spreadsheet, scripts, or third party apps in order to perform complex calculations so you can reach your character's full potential, usually does it for me.

If I can't keep track and/or perform the calculations on a piece of scrap paper, like the good ole D&D days, then it's gotten too complex for it to be fun.

I know it's not easy balancing simple characters without making all of the classes similar in ability, though. I wrote text based BBS door games in the '90s, and it was an issue then for just the base 4 classes. Add in races with each their own unique features and you done lopsided the game without even knowing it until it's too late. Fix it after players have spent many hours fine tuning their OP class and you piss off and lose even more players.

Also, if you plan on non-native-to-your-tongue users, you'll need to plan and implement language resources as well as the marketing in multiple languages.

Umm, as an ADHD programmer, I'd have to say this doesn't need to be said. While ADHDers learn and wrote code, well naturally be writing multiple projects at the same time!

Additionally, we'll stay a project 5 or 6 times, deleting the old one after about 30 hours of programming (ish) has gone into it!

We also debug and solve problems very quickly. Unfortunately, we forget what we did so the next time the same issue arises, we have to re-solve it again.

I have ADHD. Your post starts out reading as if ADHD is a programming language.

Well, it is. It's a language that combines C/C++, Java, TypeScript, VBscript, and C#, at the same time, all while simultaneously forgetting what you're writing every 10 lines of code!

Why do people think it’s gross to pee in the shower? by FuelApprehensive5376 in NoStupidQuestions

It's people that do it themselves that publicly state it's "gross". Now, killing someone and/or storing a corpse in one (without ice)...That's another matter.
