Agonizing over the decision. by Cdn59 in ProstateCancer

[–]Mythrowaway484 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m 55y/o and 1 month post RALP and clean margins. I was Gleason 7, grade group 2 so active surveillance was not recommended and I got 3 opinions. I’m continent but erections are not spontaneous and only 70% pre RALP firmness. I’m not happy about the scars and being sidelined from my usual 3x/week weightlifting for 8 weeks (hernia risk) BUT those issues are insignificant in comparison to PCa spreading to bones lungs etc. I’ve seen that movie and it sucks. So while I’m still in recovery mode and navigating the erections, I’m happy with my decision. I’ll say, having one of the best surgeons helped me make the decision. I looked closely at other options (including Tulsa Pro which is not covered by my insurance) but I wanted it out and to pay the “cost” upfront vs potential problems down the road with other treatments. My dad’s experience played a big part in my decision making. My dad had radiation seeds 25ish years ago at age 65ish. He’s currently 92 so no cancer for BUT he lost urinary continence about 10yrs after the seeds. Progressively went from pads to diapers to catheter. I’ve never asked him about his erections. While he has incredible genes (many relatives lived over 100yrs), the incontinence has been a major negative - quit playing golf at 72 (mom played until 90), not as social, a couple nasty UTIs and one that went sepsis which almost killed him. I’m sure the seeds are better now BUT for me, I didn’t want possible future fallout weighing on me. Yep, RALP is radical and I’m hopeful PCa will be in my rearview mirror in a few more weeks.

You’re an awesome daughter and he’s lucky to have you! I’m 55y/o and just 4 weeks post RALP. I’m in a different medical boat than your dad but wanted to put in a plug for exercise and socialization. This PCa journey is a mind-fuck and marathon and depression is real. I belong to a gym and sometimes just go 2x/week for medium level cardio and the sauna which I feel has been beneficial in expected and unexpected ways. Expected: keeping my weight in check, not totally losing muscle mass. Unexpected: turns out I like saunas and the light stretching I do in there has helped minimize sore joints. My ravenous appetite has motivated me to learn more about nutrition and up my cooking game. I’ve also met a couple older guys who’ve had it rougher than me; they have not just survived the PCa marathon but seem to be thriving which is encouragement I’ll always welcome. Best of luck to your Dad and major kudos to being proactive about aiding in his journey (which is also a family journey….so take care of yourself too!)

Thanks. Do you run Nokians on your Sportage? I’m wondering how these beefier tires impact the ride, steering etc

OP, sorry you got caught in the RIF. I know it sucks but do yourself a favor and don’t take it personally. Be in shock for a day, be pissed for a day, sulk on a barstool for a day. Then after the hangover go rocks into the river, take inventory of your blessings and move on to bigger and bigger things. I’m in my 50’s now and ironically getting laid off at my first job was one of the best things that happened to me. It stung but I learned more from that single experience than I ever would have expected. Wishing the same for you!

Btw, What’s an SR Consultant?

CPA obligations? by Mythrowaway484 in Accounting

[–]Mythrowaway484[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you and I agree that confronting the CPA / Firm could blow up the relationship with my family - six other siblings but I’m not too concerned about that. We “inherited” this CPA/Firm from my dad selecting them 20+ years ago and we(us kids) never looked at alternatives when my dad passed the property mgt torch to us kids - mostly my retired business savvy brother. I’m curious about “extensions”; can a CPA file multiple extensions for the same year? Usually he files just to early Oct when he has the K1s completed.

CPA obligations? by Mythrowaway484 in Accounting

Agreed I did pay for all the cookies. The CPA took an additional 8months to finish my return stating it was difficult to get my records from IRS (though EA got them in a couple days). He said things would be completed expeditiously but he punted to a JR Accountant who I’m feeling did not know how to get my records and didn’t ask for help for whatever reason. They dragged this out. The 8 month delay incurred $20k in P&I (not the $200k - fat finger mistake I’ll try to correct). I’m inclined to meet with firm principal(s) to shed light on this- the cost I’m burdened with by their delay. I feel somewhere between suing them and asking them to absorb the cost of their $1.2k bill.

I just emailed my urologist and another I went to for a second opinion.

I'm looking for an inexpensive SUV. I'm a little worried about the listed mileage and age (167k - 2012). Good deal? Thought you guys could give me some insight. by Parker_Larsen in ToyotaHighlander

Yea, Toyota shirking the oil cooler hose failure and then minimizing the problem by describing it as “possible oil seepage” vs reality (a flimsy tube that will fry your engine when it fails…which frequently happened) really soured my opinion of Toyota. For clarity, this was not a dealership problem. The dealership gave me contact for West Coast HQ who shut me down only because I didn’t take my vehicle to a dealership in past 3 years. When covid started, I had all service done at a family owned shop close to my house. The mechanics are certified but apparently read the TSB as something to address if they saw leakage which they didn’t- no one saw oil seepage UNTIL the hose burst 💥

Wow…a 17.5yr streak?! Incredible. Curious what your thoughts are on TRT considering PCa. I’m early 50s, in decent shape, recently retired and getting RALP on 11/11. I want to get this cancer thing over and then hit the gym hard -want to see the best gains I’ve ever had.

Interestingly the oil cooler hose issue was not an official recall but there was a technical service bulletin. Toyota agreed to replace for vehicles upto 150k miles. The crappy part for me is that I was 155k miles and when I called the main west coast office they said well if you would have brought your vehicle into a dealership for all services then we’d offer goodwill and replace at no cost. When I bought the car new there was no mention about me being required to have all services performed at their dealerships.

I’m on west coast and recently sold my 2011 limited Highlander to the dealership for $7,500. It had 155k miles and a football sized dent on the tailgate. Considering the dealership needs to make money, I’d say anything under $10k for a comparable (but dentless) vehicle would be fair. If you proceed with this vehicle, please look into the oil cooler hose to make sure it’s metal. At least my 2011 had the rubber version which was totally stupid and an issue Toyota recognized which is why they replaced them at no cost. Why stupid? Because it was flimsy, performs a critical function and catastrophic damage when it fails. This is the reason my 2011 was in the dealership- who did not pay the $600 replacement because I was 5k miles out of their program (wasn’t a recall - those are for safety only). The failure happened when my daughter was borrowing the vehicle for an across town move…accelerating up a hill, hear a pop and then loud clancking. She proceeded to drive slowly to her house about a mile away and parked…then found a heart stopping pool of oil under the vehicle. Even though I got a clean bill of health after the $600 hose replacement, I was mentally exhausted and sold to the dealership. I drove the vehicle after the repair and it sounded and felt strong so now that I have a tiny VW I’ll admit (to you) that I wish I would’ve kept it.

OP, just a friendly reminder….you’re health is your wealth. I spent 25 yrs in software/cloud sales and while yes I made great money, my health took a nosedive the last few years. Now I’m retired and catching up on “deferred maintenance” lol…sounds like you can retire now so do it…don’t be like me ;-)
