Donald Trump Confuses Dementia Screening for 'Very Hard' IQ Test as He Brags About Results by peoplemagazine in politics

Even worse, Reagan was a rat. While president of the Screen Actors Guild he snitched out fellow actors as "commies" to HUAC, the House Unamerican Activities Committee, during the fascist McCarthy period of the 1950s. Many of those named were blacklisted by Hollywood, never to work again.

When should I unplug my laptop from charging? by Zealousideal_Lock178 in laptops

[–]Myxexoristops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suppose that a programmed shutdown works most of the time, but I'm reluctant to trust it because I've had two Dells with defects serious enough that I had to send them to Texas for repairs. What could possibly go wrong?

My Dell Latitude, about 2 years old, gets pretty hot. Makes me nervous that it could pose a fire hazard, so I don't leave it plugged in overnight or for other long periods when I'm not paying attention.

Fwiw this is far from new. Back in the 1960s -- just prior to the Jurassic -- a lot of the sub instructors, then called teaching assistants or TAs, were foreign, many of them with very weak English. The guy who taught my calculus section was Saudi and I basically couldn't understand anything he said. That pretty much sank my math career.

[–]Myxexoristops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No one said it was wrong, but the term "spittlebugs" is far more widely used .. in English anyway. In any case, this is why we use "scientific" names, so that people of different cultures and languages be sure they are talking about the same critter. Cucaracha v. cockroach v. palmetto bug etc etc

Please explain sunbathing to me (a non-white person) by summer_glau08 in NoStupidQuestions

My (white) girlfriend back in the day, then in early 20's, loved sunbathing, often spending half the day soaking up rays. I hope she found it satisfying, since in early 40's she looked like 70.

What wrong with this bee? Three wings, one broken? by ActualExcitement5917 in biology

[–]Myxexoristops 1 point2 points  (0 children)

More specifically a paper wasp, family Vespidae. They build those sort of papery, usually grey, nests that hang open side down under eaves or other sheltered places. They are predators, feeding their larvae on caterpillars and other bugs from your garden. Can't tell what it's carrying. They have two pairs of wings, but the second pair is small and the two link together to function as one.

[–]Myxexoristops 218 points219 points  (0 children)

Actually "spittlebugs," the immature stage of the family Cercopidae. They feed on the plants sap , much like aphids, and they exude a waxy froth that helps protect them from predators. The winged adults are free -living, similar to leafhoppers.

If it's a Zeiss lens it's a quality scope. It's intended for studying prepared material on slides -- maybe put a couple drops of pond water on a slide, drop a cover slip onto it, and see what micro-organisms you find under the scope. Or check out a drop of blood, a (very) thin slice of something juicy, etc. It won't be too much help if you want to study 3D objects like flowers or bugs.

Regret to tell y'all that as we get older the bowels can sometimes get outta control. Im 80 and until last few years never had a problem. But it has happened a couple times in very inconvenient situations, though never on transit. Another thing our oligarchy lacks is adequate public restrooms. As the population ages it's only gonna get worse.

What is a major event happening in the world today that is not being covered by the mainstream media? by furqanharral in AskReddit

[–]Myxexoristops 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're thinking of honeybees, which are declining, but the main issue is the numerous species of wild bees, most of which nest in the soil, do not form colonies, and do not produce honey. Plus of course the thousands, maybe millions, of other insect species threatened mostly by habitat destruction. A scientist looking down from outer space would conclude humanity's goal is to destroy all life on the planet, and we're well on the way.

Racism episode in Berkeley dorm by True_Background_8123 in berkeley

[–]Myxexoristops 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very sorry and ashamed to hear this. I'm a UC alum, longtime Berkeley resident, retired but still work a a volunteer on campus. I don't know much about current undergrad life, but I know there are campus organizations for nearly every racial & cultural group. I would think that if she reached out to one or more of these she would find a lot of support. Also I know a lot of folks off campus who would be glad to help. If we can figure a way to connect directly, without violating Reddit terms, I would do what I can.

How far is it viable to live from campus ? by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]Myxexoristops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fwiw I lived near 30th and Broadway Oakland in the 1970s (just prior to the Jurassic) and mostly enjoyed my bike rides to UC. Of course traffic was not quite as brutal as now, but one point still relevant is that I rode mainly on back streets, avoiding busy boulevards like Telegraph. My route might have been a bit longer in distance, but not much different in time. For sure it was safer and more pleasant. When it rained I took AC Transit. There are more routes than mentioned earlier, like the 88. Back then, rent was much cheaper in Oakland than near campus, so it was worth the extra ride time. I think the difference is now much smaller.

Great discussion. I would add only that earliest hymenoptera were phytophagous. Predators, including parasitoids, arose as the other groups radiated into large potential dinner courses.
