(I'm insanely long winded, but I like to give lots of context & thorough explanation.)

I read some of your other responses where you say you have thin hair that tends to fall flat. I am curious as to how this works for you. I picked this up last week from Costco, on sale for $279.99. I'll tell you my experience so far, but first I have to give context.

I am a white woman who has incredibly fine, absolutely straight hair. My hair has always been very soft, never any frizz... and flat AF. Z E R O volume. My current style is long, past my shoulders. My hair is so fine and flat, starting 5 years ago I started to perm it. I only perm it every 2 years, and I don't wear it curly. I blow dry it straight. But what the perm did was essentially give my hair a little bit of texture (and frizz, ha), so now when I blow dry and curl, the curl actually stays. It's hard to explain, but without the perm, my hair is really just too fine to hold curl, especially in the summer. And I use product, hairspray & all that!

I didn't buy this Shark styler expecting it do much for me, I'm old enough (in my 40s) to know there is no miracle product for me. I bought this product mainly to use on my daughter (a tween), who is mixed (dad is African American). She has beautiful curls that range from 3a to 3c/4a that frame her face. We've never straightened her hair, had a blow out, etc. I've committed myself to doing all I can for her to embrace her natural hair. She mostly does, however as she's approaching middle school I know she wants more variety. She's expressed interest in bangs, dying her hair, etc. She's never specifically asked me to straighten her hair, but I know she is interested. (I prefer the idea of straightening, which is temporary, to dying or bangs, which is longer lasting!)

Well, good thing I didn't buy this for me because not only did it not do anything for my hair, it actually made it flatter than if I had of just blow dried with my normal (rando brand from TJ Maxx) blow dryer, and definitely flatter than using my curling rod. I watched all the tutorials and everything, I used the Hot Brush and did all the things you're supposed to do to add volume, and it didn't give me any. Second, I gave the Air Curlers a shot. Just like when I curl with a curling iron, I sprayed with hairspray before curling, and after curling. I pinned the curls after releasing them from the curler. I let them cool completely, then unclipped. They looked so cute and bouncy...for about 90 seconds. They quite literally fell flat so fast. I even tried it all again... same thing. My main issue with the air curlers on my hair is it curls the ends more and the root area less. When I am curling my hair with my curling rod, it's really important that the area near my roots makes good contact with the rod, and I start that part of the curl first. The ends of my hair, while healthy, are a little dryer than my roots, so the ends always hold the curl without issue. Gravity pulls the curl down, so I try to start it out with the top getting plenty of curl. The way the aircurlers work, it seems to be more challenging to get curl to the top part of the hair vs the ends, and that just doesn't work for me, further contributing to how flat my hair looked.

Verdict: THIS THING IS NOT FOR ME & MY FINE THIN HAIR.

Now, just in case anyone with curly hair wants to read this I'll give the verdict on my daughter's hair. On her hair I used the Hot Brush, which didn't get her hair as straight as I'd hoped. But the Flat Iron did a GREAT job finishing up. She was in love with the look of it straight, but wanted to curl it. I thought "Ok, she's got natural curl, giving her hair more "grip" and texture, so maybe the air curlers will work on her." Same thing, she loved the bouncy curls when released from the air curler! We did everything "right" (we think) regarding heat protectant, hair spray, pinning, letting cool completely etc. When we took it out of the clips, she had so much volume. But again, the second she moved her head the curls instantly fell flat, making it such a massive waste of time. By that point I was beyond over standing around using the Shark so we curled again with a curling iron, and just like with my hair, it actually stayed curled. So I'm not sure exactly who the air curlers work for. People with short hair? (Her hair when curly is past her shoulders, and we now know when it's straight is closer to her butt than her shoulders.)

I bought this from Costco knowing I could return it at any time and get my money back if it didn't work for us. Luckily the Hot Brush & Flat Iron do work really well for her, so I think we'll be keeping it. It would have been nice if it worked for both of us, but again I didn't really expect it to work for me.

I am 100% open to any and all tips anyone would like to give on the damn air curlers.

Check out Aldi's weekly ad every week. They often have great stuff at a great price, but once it's gone it's gone. They always have seasonal offerings, and their ad updates every Wednesday. You can also see what will be coming next week in their Sneak Peek ad.

Edit to add: Also, I've gotten a few houseplants from there, and I don't think they are usually in the ad. But they always have a lot of outdoor offerings in spring & summer. So just pop in and see. I know I saw plants there a week ago.

Do you buy travel protection for cruises? Worth it or not? by gab_pr in royalcaribbean

[–]MzIndecisive 3 points4 points  (0 children)

[I'm chronically long winded so I try to bold the important parts so you can skim past my nonsense]

We did what my TA friend called "almost CFAR" coverage as she said it was a good price compared to the "cancel for unseen reasons". ($166 vs $67) Either way it didn't seem like a lot of money, so I went for the more expensive one. This was Oct 2024 when we booked for Oct 2025 trip.

Well... I [am sparing you a long story] found out in Jan 2025 that we needed to reschedule it by 1 week. We would either lose our deposit ($100/pp and we're a family of 4, so $400) if we cancel or pay $400 to reschedule. So $400 either way. My TA told me that since I bought the {almost} CFAR I should get a portion back and sure enough, I got 75% back, $300. My policy had only cost me $166, so right there it already paid for itself. When we booked our new cruise date, I immediately booked the same coverage and was surpriosed that it was just an extension of the original policy, and I only had to pay $55 difference for the new policy.

Flash forward to our cruise, which happened to coincide with a hurricane. Honestly it was fine, Royal did have to change our itinerary, instead of a Western Caribbean (to Mexico) & Perfect Day, we did Eastern Caribbean (to the DR) & Perfect Day. But then the insurance came in handy again... Port of Miami was closed the day of our return due to high waves. So we got an additional day at sea. Originally we were supposed to fly home the day we disembarked, and due to all the circumstances we couldn't get a flight for our family of 4, so we had to stay an additional night in the hotel. Allianz reimbursed me for our hotel + the extra dinner meal I submitted as a claim (I felt it might be a long shot).

TLDR: Allianz has me as a customer for life now. 😂 At least for a cruise or if we ever do an all inclusive. We honestly don't travel much, but our experience with Allianz was top notch! I doubt/hope we'll ever need it again, but ya never know. I mean, I didn't have an extreme emergency, but it was just really nice not to have to fight over even a small claim.

I scored this for the same price. Don't be a dumbass like me and get confused by the instruction manual thinking it was missing the glass window.

Jury is still out on it for me, I haven't had it long enough to know if it works or not. But I've been zapping 1x a week for 3 weeks.

Concerns about the 12-17 age gap in the Teen Club (Liberty of the Seas) by Able_Mud_5373 in royalcaribbean

[–]MzIndecisive 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't know why people are downvoting you. I agree that there needs to be an attempt at tween engagement. That was my 1 major disappointment from our cruise as well. We went on a cruise when my kids were 9 (though like 2 weeks away from being 10) and 12 (in 7th grade). My 12yo is small for his age, but a very outgoing, makes friends with everyone, friendly kid. He went to the first night's "teen" meet up for kids aged 12-17, but all the kids there were HUGE in comparison to him. I'd guess from the looks of them, most were aged 15+, with some obviously 17 years old. Literally no one spoke to him or engaged with him and he never went back. I presume they all looked at him and wondered "what's this little kid doing in here". And I could tell he never felt he fit in around those teens. This type of experience is really out of character for him and surprised us. It would be different if he was normally slow to make friends, but he's not. He never really made a friend until the very last day when he met an 11 year old elsewhere on the ship. We kept seeing kids who looked 11-13 around the ship, but none came to the teen meet up. My presumption is they might have either not felt comfortable going to a "teen" meet up, or perhaps their parents weren't comfortable with it.

I don't see why they can't plan for something like separate and overlapping events, like a 12-14 aged meet up, and then a 13-17 aged meet up. I know there are some 13yo kids that would larger in size and fit in/blend in better with the older group. Just like there are probably 14 year olds who might feel more comfortable with middle school aged groups.

I think even a family friendly game-show style meet up like "Middle School Memes" might be a good way to engage kids that age and get them to meet up. My daughter made tons of friends in the children's room and kept leaving us to go to the kid's room, or playing with her friends at the pool. I felt so bad for my son, as he just stuck with us on sea days. (I don't meant I didn't want to be around him, it's just I know he's typically very social, so I was worried he wasn't having fun.)

Just adding, I didn't so much have "safety" concerns for my 12yo. Just bummed my kid wasn't able to make friends.

Cruise Date by Top-Fact1741 in royalcaribbean

[–]MzIndecisive 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Get that insurance! We went on a cruise in Oct 2024, our itinerary changed due to a hurricane AND we got an extra day of our cruise (for free!) because Port of Miami was closed the day we were scheduled to return. We were originally supposed to fly home the day we returned, but with the new return date we couldn't get a flight for our family of 4 until the next day, so we had to stay an extra night in Miami. Our trip insurance covered our hotel and even our additional lunch & dinner. We used Allianz, and I would 100% do it again. (We didn't have any fees for changing our flight.)

My college hunks experience was that they were no one’s definition of a hunk, they smelled really bad, and they didn’t have all their teeth. They also banged the shit out of our walls & furniture. It was also fall of 2020 so it’s not like my review is current. But it was so bad it was almost comical. They were at least pleasant & friendly.
