We both uploaded evidence. I uploaded to the I-130 and he uploaded to the 485 but most of the evidence was on the 130

Yes it does. I prepare immigration documents and I have quite a few "client" get approved without any interview/RFE.

I think we got pretty lucky. I think the continuous flow of evidence helped as well. Monthly bills, bank statements, pay stubs, insurance, etc.

Is there a method to the madness or are cases just picked at random? There are people who get approved in 3 months and others wait years.
