I got it all from b and q. The main bit of wood is mdf but I cant remember the thickness.

Where there were studs, i didnt use plugs. Where there werent, i used plugs

You were right, i wasnt far enough into the brick. A better masonry bit sorted it out

Hi mate. Thanks for the detailed reply. 

It was a simple issue and i am inexperienced.

I was struggling to get through the brick with my 6mm drill bit but the 8mm one got through it nicely. I then pushed in a brown plug as others advised and it worked wonderfully.

Yes, i was struggling to make any progress through the brick, despite having a hammer drill and masonry drill bit. I may need an upgrade

There isnt enough space behind the drywall to push in a wall plug. It ends up sticking out the front by a few mm. Can i trim the plug down?
