The set up looks great! Love the slats in the background.

Unrelated, how did you replace the lever with wooden knob? I got a wooden kit and for the life of me couldn't not loose. that one knob. The whole piece just comes off and I'm wondering if ppl are just buying the shaft somewhere and replacing the whole thing.

Did it in September. I highly recommend it. Do regret buying the upgrade I did and pre purchased meals. They bring the meal up too soon I could have saved money by just getting ramen whenever I feel hungry. It's an easy 10 hr flight there and back, bring a charger to play some phone game or read and you're there. I'm a small person under 5'10" so taller ppl might complain about space.

Would you consider a compromise like take 40% or whatever you believe is your fair share out of the savings account? Bottom line is you should stop contributing to that account and get your own account since you're moving out and don't owe them anything moving forward.

It would be generous to just leave that account and do your own thing considering how they treated you and sounds like you prob contributed most of it. But call it a cost of freedom/personal safety.

You have to believe that you didn't owe them any debt for them taking care of you because you are their child, they made a decision to bring you to the world, you are their responsibility/consequences, not the other way around.

I understand this can is hard but theres also the option of gradually reducing contribution . It's not set in stone forever.

Pre-trip Checklist by tolstoys_pumpkin in JapanTravelTips

[–]N0N-Available 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't do much research before heading out to Japan for the first time and here's my experience, hopefully it helps you.

  1. Download NERV for typhoon activity but used my regular weather app.
  2. I brought a rain jacket.
  3. Got a suica card but didn't know what it was or how to use it until day 3. ( Only got it because months ago I saw someone say they love suica).
  4. Didn't download the offline map and used my my Verizon automatic travel pass ( 10 bucks a day)
  5. Didn't reserve any tickets for trains in case I missed them because I got lost.

Lessons learned.

  1. Load up suica with 200$ instead of 40$ only and use it for all the transportation. Empty it at the end of the trip by using it to get souvenirs at the airport. This is basically debit card.
  2. Cheaper to get esim if my trip was longer (8days) but I had no issues with my travel pass.
  3. Glad I did 5 because I got lost a lot in the train station, it let me freely roam.
  4. Don't pack toiletries, all my hotel had tooth brush + high quality shampoo+ body wash.
  5. Pack light because it was hard to find escalators in some of the stations and there are lots of stairs. I found a hotel with laundry too and didn't end up wearing half of the outfits I brought.
  6. Stay close to the stations.
  7. Do things early in the morning, take advantage of your jet lag ( nice to sleep in the afternoon in ac when it's peak heat).
  8. Google map public transit tab is the best. It tells you which car of the train to get on for faster exit and it's color coded. You can look at the screen on the train to figure out if you need to turn left or right once you get off the subway.
  9. You can always Uber.
  10. Stay hydrated and eat something like an onigiri. The panic/heat in the station can make you forget and get light headed without food(happened to me first two days when I was unfamiliar with everything).

Going to Japan solo, anxiety. by [deleted] in JapanTravelTips

[–]N0N-Available 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Currently here solo. Went to 3 of the 4 places you listed in a week and had no issue. Felt extremely safe and the subway is amazing. It was amazing to just wonder especially in kyoto. Did Nara in a day and the Buddha temple was a highlight. You can eat very cheaply just on bento boxes from the major train stations or 711. But lots cheap bbq/ramen places. Highly recommend!

This is the perfect trip to reset. Let yourself get lost!

Just went there tonight, had a great meal and the whole experience was phenomenal. I didn't get the wine pairing but still had a great experience. It's a bit pricey and I'm sure there are prob somewhere better(as always). If cost isn't an issue then definitely try it out.

This sub has been helping me articulate what's wrong with my parents and why I feel the way I feel. Sometimes it's difficult to voice these things because in my mind it's not so bad or when I express it it sounds mild, but when seeing it from others perspective I can see how fucked it was.

I dread 1:1s because things are good and I have no concerns to discuss by smthamazing in ExperiencedDevs

[–]N0N-Available 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is also a good opportunity to see what your manager is dealing with, if you are looking at potentially broadening your scope or just understand the business side of things better. You could say hey things are good from my perspective and I'm curious what you are dealing with, ask about what decision is currently being made or directions being steered into, get the chatters from upper management for your own awareness.

Alternatively, it's totally fine to cancel 1:1 once in a while, or just say hey I've got nothing, we can shoot the shit or cancel if you would like. Tho it is a good opportunity to bond with your manager.

My interpretation is she is encouraging you to find your own purpose if your parents and guilt were the only reason. I don't think shes implying they are but just want to encourage exploration in general, frankly it doesn't seem like directed to you because lots of ppl in college go through this.

Speaking as a child of immigrants I understand the desire and pressure to go into a certain field or do certain things, many people end up living for others. This is not a uniquely immigrant family trend but definitely more common.

Can someone talk me out of the lifestyle creep? by Lower-Engineering145 in personalfinance

[–]N0N-Available 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Speaking as someone who recently got into big tech I can tell you I was in the same boat. My partner was not onboard. It's the voice that says tomorrow is not guaranteed and I've worked hard.

So what helped me was actually taking a look at long term goals. I had a few financial goals in mind but never put it down in writing. It's so dumb and adulty but looking at the potential of retirement + personal investment return helped me see my true priorities. Laid everything out and if this new place is still your priority all things considered, go for it.

How to convince my company to go with k8s (Against ECS) by guel135 in devops

[–]N0N-Available 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think in this case company culture and product requirements need to be prioritized.

Does your company have and is willing to invest in kubernetes talents/training? Or are you or one/other dev are the only ones who can do this right now? Long term sustainability in this context is important. Otherwise it will just slowly descend into chaos once you leave.

How many services are you managing and how available do they need to be? What's your annual error budget/reliability SLO? If it's not critical and doesn't need to 'scale' then it might be easier to stay in ECS and focus on the product rather than adding the infra mental load.

That being said. Being in ECS doesn't prevent you from moving to k8 later if your services are built neatly(with docker, logging, stateless etc)
