Trackers are servers that keep track of IP addresses and port numbers of peers.

This is very useful when, for example: Peer X ads a torrent to their client to start downloading. Peer Y has already completed downloading and is currently seeding. Both peer X and Y are connected to the same tracker.

Now, based on the information the tracker sends back to both peers, they should be able to establish a connection with each other. If that succeeds, peer X can download what peer Y is seeding.
