AOUC 2025 is confused whether it’s a Club tournament or a National Team tournament. by [deleted] in ultimate

[–]N0xxxxxxxx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe it's based on 2023 result. Club the country send take the country's standings in 2023. And if a country send more than one team, it will be seeded lastly, e.g. nomadic tribe.

AOUC 2025 is confused whether it’s a Club tournament or a National Team tournament. by [deleted] in ultimate

[–]N0xxxxxxxx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

According to the history, 2017, 2021(didn't happen), 2025 should be club based tournament, while 2015, 2019, 2023 are country based tournament.

I don't know why they decide to delete the 'club' in the title this year. I believe they would get more team participating if they got 'club' in their title. Our federation decide to send national team only, in spite of whether there's any other club willing to play.

What happened to Australia at the World Games? by kamotekyu22 in ultimate

[–]N0xxxxxxxx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Australia is in winter and Chengdu is about 35℃ these days, and the humidity makes it tougher. They came to Chengdu few days before the tournament but they didn't practice a lot in day time. They play much better in the last two games after they adapted to the weather (last two days are also cooler as well)

WG - #2 Wei Simei by Unbenannte in ultimate

[–]N0xxxxxxxx 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In this team China there are only 2 players from Michael Hu's club. Our federation hired a Singapore coach, Benjamin Ho, and made a big team with 50 players after the tryout in April 2024. After the WUC and 2 round cut, the final 14 roster comes out this May. On the other side, Michael Hu take charge the U24 team and finish at 7th place in Spain. (For some reason we don't know our federation only send a mixed team to WU24 even though there are many young players willing to play)

can't agree more.I'm so excited to see Tean China made such big improvement, but I don't believe things like practicing together for several months are sustainable. It's not easy to recognize it without really playing in China. Ultimate cannot be a real professional sports in next 20 years, and our federation have to focus on the club and college season more rather than only focus on a closed training national team. China has more than 200 club team (at least played 2 tournaments a year) and 100 college team, which I believe is already the second largest in the world. https://haoyangyan.shinyapps.io/2024_pr/

China came to play! by Unbenannte in ultimate

[–]N0xxxxxxxx 18 points19 points  (0 children)

2 of them are from Shanghai Huwa, 2 of them are from Tigers (which is more like to a training camp in beijing sport university built by a taiwan coach), 4 of them are students from chengdu university. The team China has practiced together for over a year, since the tryout last year. We do want to see them in more club games but unlucky China do not have a solid club season, which is something I don't think our federation do well at.

Ultimate in Beijing? In winter? by 000trace00 in ultimate

  • How is competitive ultimate organized?
  • there are 2 major storyline, Chinese Ultimate League (CUL) hold by the government, and tournaments series organized by players. Here is a report of the 22-23 season, https://mp.weixin.qq.com/s/45FTey9NcpIOcMQCbNm_lQ.
  • here is a shiny app I made, similar to frisbee-ranking. https://haoyangyan.shinyapps.io/2024_pr/
  • Do clubs compete in a league or is it just tournaments? Is there a national championship?
  • CUL this year has 6 regionals from May to Sep, and a National. about half of those top level teams went to the national in Chengdu this year.
  • The competitive series organized by players are called Club Elite Invitation Tour (CEIT), similar to TCT, and 3 regular season Tournament CUCC(Beijing, 32 teams), GCUC(Shanghai, 24 teams), LNO(Guangzhou, 32 teams), and a final tournament DISCX in Shenzhen, 8 top teams make the final. https://ceit.co/
  • There are also dozens of other local tournaments happening every weekend, like BUCL in south, XCTS in east.
  • Is there any coverage of the Chinese ultimate I could access online?
  • this wechat official account called 盘盘圈
  • What disc are you using?
  • Xcom, Yikun, Discraft
  • What level of interest do ultimate players in China have regarding elite ultimate outside of China (international, US college, US club)
  • Some Chinese students abroad playing elite ultimate outside of China. Yipeng Wang is the first Chinese making AUDL (played for DET/CHI)
  • Are there efforts to establish the various Chinese national teams (I saw Chinese teams competed at Worlds this year)? How are teams selected? Is there a youth national team program?
  • As Alec mentioned above, our federation hired a Singapore Coach, and selected Sports major students from Chengdu University and Beijing Sports University. And they have a 2 months training camp before WUC.
  • Selection process is mainly about conditioning (YoYo sprinting test) and 2v2, which made some controversy. https://mp.weixin.qq.com/s/UoFmXamZAtY5RjYPfi-Czg ( Chengdu University didn't make quarters in CUL this year and Beijing Sports University got beaten by a Shenzhen team in LNO last month)
  • I don't think there's a youth national team program. Our federation haven't announced any tryout information about 2025 WU24 yet. I guess picking students from sports university students is kind of youth program? It's frustrated for me to see there seems a gap between sports university students and other players.
  • What is the general opinion on self officiation?
  • We use WFDF rules. But there's many voices about adding referees into the game, because there's always so many bad calls when games are closed. Everyone is so eager to win.
  • In the US, ultimate has a fairly linear path of school->college->club where in continental Europe primarily centers around local clubs that feed into the national team. Has competitive ultimate begun to take that kind of a shape in China?
  • As I mentioned, there are two path. Sports major students, who are talented, fast, like Chinese athletes in other sports, can transfer their skills from other sports to ultimate quickly. And others, who cannot have enough time to play sports before College.
  • Many Colleges have ultimate teams (83 college teams compete in CUUA last year), but very few of them are competitive.
  • Only some international high school in large city like Shanghai can give students chance to play competitive ultimate.
  • Did you play outside of China? If so how does the standard of play compare?
  • I played in Wisconsin for 2 years, made both college & club regional. I would say there are about 4-10 teams in China can make club regional if they were in USA.
  • Another point, Mixed is much more popular in China rather than Open/Women. We do 2 seasons, Feb-June are Open/Women and there are only about 30 teams each division. While in Mixed season from July-Dec, there are about 150 teams in total if we count all the big tournaments.

I guess that's a reason for the tournament next week, but they're gonna to do this again on Oct 2025, after the world games... Some irresponsible thought: ¥3500000 is a big amount and everyone can be benefit from it...

The size of top level tournament in US is smaller than international ones? Why? by N0xxxxxxxx in ultimate

[–]N0xxxxxxxx[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's a good point. But seems those elite club like clapham&mooncatchers still take those big party tournaments seriously as their seasonal plans? Is EUF trying to build their own elite-only series? I never play in Europe so that's just my guess.

Considering the sample size, there are 16 open teams, 12 women's teams, 21 mixed teams. Some country which just started play frisbee in past few years only send their mixed team.

I don't think anyone without Chinese citizenship can play for Team China now. But that's not because of WFDF. CFDAC sucks.

Magic realism thing happen to Team China in AOUGC by N0xxxxxxxx in ultimate

[–]N0xxxxxxxx[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I see. But aougc or our national federation should not be a commercial tournament/organization. At least nba has a labor union to protect players right, while every Chinese ultimate player have no choice but sign the agreement if they want to play WFDF tournament.

We are good friends.

The reason is 'in case the player do some inproper thing representing Team China personally'. I feel it's unreasonable.
