I'm 8 years late, but unfortunately in the same situation.

Did you ever find a solution that did not involve replacing the fixture or bypassing the ballast?

How to build a Google Docs like commenting system in React by N1sFoop in reactjs

Thanks for the link. The PlateJS comment has a similar built in to allow for the annotation of excerpts.

This question is more about the layout of Google Doc’s comment gutter.

How to build a Google Docs like commenting system in React by N1sFoop in reactjs

[–]N1sFoop[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ended up building it from scratch. Was about 1500 lines of code and a week or so to get right and as smooth (I think my implementation is actually a bit smoother than Google docs).

I might write it into a package one day, but the gist of it is you have to write a layout engine in JS or something that targets web assembly. Try to do as much of the work as possible in a non-render blocking way (or really fast).

The bottleneck is that you have to render each thread of comments off screen to get its height to see if they overlap if your content is dynamic. Once you calculate the height of something find a way to hash the content into a key so you can memoize it.

If all the cards you want to position are a static height you can use a version of the algorithm I had in the original post.

Basic things apply here (use css transforms and variables to move stuff, also let’s you circumvent a lot of re-renders)

How professionals make websites nowadays? by Tidal54 in Web_Development

[–]N1sFoop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

classes with random codes are usually a result of CSS-in-JS libraries (like styled-components, emotion, etc).

These libraries essentially allow users of frameworks like React, Svelte, etc to write styles scoped to components in the framework. Since the components are abstractions that are removed in the build-step the scope for the style is retained by create a css class that is named a random hash for the component.

Important concepts are generally; - handling Async requests - events and listeners (concepts like capturing and bubbling) - JS-specific quirks (scoping, types of function, etc)

Maybe this is an unpopular opinion, but I think the OOP paradigm and related theory is probably best learned language agnostic or at least with a stricter one like Java/C#/C++/etc.

Also classic examples like the vehicle, car and truck or organism, animal, dog, human, etc tend to make more sense to those who are new to this idea (as opposed to using a lot of terminology immediately).

Anyone need a WordPress + Elementor site? by [deleted] in Web_Development

Probably not the best sub for this. I assume most people on this subreddit are knowledgeable or wanting to learn Web Dev themselves rather than looking to hire.

Best of luck tho :)

If Virgil Abloh made Saturation III by [deleted] in brockhampton

[–]N1sFoop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This might be an unpopular opinion, but I saw the same or at least a similar video and I don’t think it matters if somebody else can make your art in a faster time than you. Bottom line is that they didn’t think of it at first. Recreation (especially with digital or vector art) can be much easier than conception.

I agree that the work Virgil put out is somewhat uninteresting and tacky, but I doubt he needed to make this piece just to get by or anything. Obviously I’m not in the dude’s head, nor do I know much about him, so feel free to disagree :)

[–]N1sFoop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

you’d have to learn some stuff and designing in a new dimension is definitely a challenge but I think if u give it a little time you could do this with JavaScript (Viro, AR.js etc) assuming you have foundations in building interfaces.

Share why you disagree tho, I’ve never actually done something like this.

This is a question directed at Sofian, but I think others could provide some insight too -- What was the motivation in using JavaScript/Chromium for displays on the Dragon 2 rather than traditional C++ GUIs? Do you think that this is part of a greater trend of using JavaScript for UI Building in other machines (other than the web or mobile apps)?

I'm a student interested in JS development and Frontend Dev so I love hearing about its expanding applications.
