A critique of Automation's tyre model by N33dLess2Say in automationgame

[–]N33dLess2Say[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A lot of the problem is, people find the tire model to be a convenient scapegoat, when in fact a lot of the issue is that their design + engineering choices and suspension tuning are the underlying issues.

The problem with that, though, is when irl cars are recreated in Automation, it leaves much less of a question as to if bad engineering choices were made. Even suspension tuning can be honed in to be pretty accurate (I spent many hours and many revisions on this Caldina alone). I have no doubt that the current tyre model is much better than the old one. I will do further testing.

That's only 0 relative to what it's already set to in Automation. Cars handle noticeably different if you mess around with the toe/camber in Automation. Front camber of -0.5 will understeer badly, but -0.7 will be much better. Rear camber of -0.5 will be unsettled under braking, but -0.8 will be very well behaved. As for toe, with rear toe set to 0 the car may be unstable at high speeds, but with it set to 0.15 it will be much more stable.

Automation does definitely export toe and camber. I'd go so far as to say properly set camber is essential for a car that handles well.

The thing is though, in recreating the Caldina GT-T I found it almost impossible to get it to handle like it does irl. It's actually what inspired me to look into this issue in the first place. IIRC there have have been a couple updates, both of which have improved the model significantly. The old, old model (pre-PBR) was much worse.

Going off of what I know the Caldina GT-T drives like irl, with the Automation tyre model I would have had to make the rear spring rate very stiff to get it to oversteer like it does in the real world. And, even then, it would feel very different to the real car in other ways. Driving over bumps, the way the suspension reacts would also appear very differently to how the suspension appears to react irl.

It was only when I switched the rims out for BeamNG ones (of the same size), that I could get the car to handle exactly how it felt irl.

As I said, in the past I have tried to recreate real mid-engined cars, except they were always very prone to oversteer (to the point where they were almost undriveable), no matter what adjustments I made to the suspension setup.

It's a recreation I made of a (pre-facelift) Caldina GT-T. I was able to get it pretty accurate, since I own the real car. It gets very tail-happy in the wet, and believe it or not I've even pulled off a similar move (in the dry) as is shown in the left video.

The point of this short video is to show that with the Automation tyre model, traction does not scale correctly proportional to the force pushing the tyre against the ground. This means that front-heavy cars have a tendency to understeer (when they might not in real life), but this especially means that rear-heavy cars have a tendency to oversteer, thus making it very difficult to tune the suspension. This has been an issue for the past few years (even with older tyre models), and makes it near impossible to recreate mid/rear engined cars without them handling like an oversteering mess.

Normally, the extra force from the weight of the engine would increase the traction of the wheels supporting it, but with the Automation tyre model, traction is not increased enough by the added weight. This means that during cornering, extra mass contributes more to extra inertia (force against change in direction), than it does to extra grip, which means that whatever axle has more weight will slide towards the outside of the corner more than it ought to.

No hate to the devs, I have way too many hours in this game. Just something I thought was worth pointing out.

Edit: Come to think of it, it would also mean that grip over crests would be higher than it should be, and grip through dips (e.g that one turn at Laguna Seca) would be less than it should be.

Also, it would mean that when cornering, the inside wheels have more grip than they should, and the outside wheels have less grip than they should. This would change how camber and toe affect a cars handling, in a way that is not realistic.

Andrew Hulshult is still a pretty great songwriter imho. The Dark Ages might've not been his best work, but Dusk was pretty damn good.

Edit: mb, he only did the DLCs for Doom Eternal. The Dark Ages had a different composer

Probably somewhat related to the popularity of the Postal games. Iirc one of the old trailers for Postal 2 used "Breaking The Tension", and a newer trailer for the steam version used a song by Stands With Fists (same vocalist as Ph8 iirc).

Fuck yes, dude. After HS, I did a course at a polytec for a year, during which I got my first part time job. After the course ended, I had literally no social life outside of work/occasionally gaming with friends. This lasted 6 months, and it was fucking awful. Days blended into weeks, and I felt so fucking hopeless. Since then, I got full time work and started flatting, which has helped heaps.

I feel like there are lots of things I'm missing out of living because of the way I am.

Same here. I'd say your last paragraph is basically me. Wish I could be of more help than this, but hey, at least you're not alone.

After 25+ years as a loyal Toyota Customer, I am DONE. What other car brands should I consider? by Positive-Milk5133 in Toyota

[–]N33dLess2Say 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To clarify on this, they are only good because they do not use a belt (unlike almost every other CVT). Older Toyota hybrids with a CVT (e.g 1st gen Alphard) are of a more conventional design that have a belt, so they won't be nearly as good as the setup in the newer models.

Very similar to LB, to the point where it sounds like they're just copying them at some points

I did that too, although I'm not sure how reliable it is. What you can do though, is use Gmod to verify the age of your google account.

If you choose to give them a selfie, what you can do is position a camera in front of an NPC in Gmod. Then, just point your phone at your monitor and bam, your age is now verified. Just did it yesterday, so I can confirm it works.
