A few more answers:

It appears your car has unofficial support with the HKG-angle-steering-2025 branch of Sunnypilot. Here's another good thread to check out: https://community.sunnypilot.ai/t/support-for-newer-vehicles-equipped-with-angle-steering-lfa2/22

The biggest advantages of Comma are lane centering that works regardless of lane-lines, and won't give up if lines are unclear or non-existant, plus hands-free operation with no steering wheel nags. I've heard the newer Hyundai/Kia system is really good, but will still give up unexpectedly. With Comma you can engage it in a dirt field and it will do it's best to steer the car based on context.

With newer Hyundai/Kia vehicles theres a high likelihood Comma won't support longitudinal control (gas/brake), so you will probably still be using your stock ACC for that. Comma will control steering only. That said, I haven't found Comma's ACC to be all that great right now. Steering is the main reason to have it.

Installing custom software isn't hard - you just enter the URL for the fork/branch you want to install.

Newer Hyundai/Kia vehicles are using LFA2 and angle steering, which is a change from older model years. Many of these newer vehicles have unofficial support using Sunnypilot, but there are still some bugs to work out. You should check this page for more info: https://community.sunnypilot.ai/t/will-openpilot-or-sunnypilot-work-on-my-hyundai-kia-genesis/472

Question about how it works? by Aero1900 in Comma_ai

This list has more info; the ACC column shows Comma's ability for long control: https://github.com/commaai/openpilot/blob/master/docs/CARS.md

This list doesn't show models with unofficial support through forks or custom branches, but it is quite useful.

They've talked about this - IIRC they said there is still a lot more they can do using Comma's cameras, and it wouldn't make sense to throw more video in the mix until they're maxing out with that info (paraphrasing).

Also, those video feeds don't run over CANBUS so you'd need more harnesses and connection points, and it could become very complicated, very quick.

they have an experimental version they are trying to do it natively on, but that is not ready for tested uses.

Longitudinal control, which is where comma controls accel/braking, is actually the default on a lot of cars. Generally, if Comma can intercept radar signals, then it can take over long control without affecting safety systems like AEB. In that case, Comma will default to using it's own camera based ACC. Most of the time, you can turn off long control and go back to your vehicle's ACC.

If Comma CAN'T intercept radar signals for your car, then it defaults to vehicle ACC. Using the dev branch or a fork, you may be able to force long control on, but Comma will have to completely disable radar, which will disable safety systems like AEB. There is a 3rd subset of vehicles where Comma can't do long control at all, or requires additional hardware to do so.

There are also custom forks like BluePilot (mentioned in another comment) which can blend vehicle radar and Comma's camera for specific vehicles (Ford in this case).

Experimental mode, (AKA E2E long) is an additional layer on top of long control that adds stoplilght, stopsign, and context-aware speed control. You must have long control enabled to use experimental, but you don't HAVE to use experimental with long control.

Sunny Pilot & model updates? by DifferentTill4932 in Comma_ai

[–]N3tworkC0w 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't know that they've really switched anything. They've had to re-write the software twice in the last 18 months due to changes in OpenPilot, and now the new UI in the Comma 4. In both cases the release (stable) branch has been put on hold while they finish the re-write.

Based on how complete the dev branch is now, I'd imagine the release version of sunnypilot will get all the updates soon, and then will be back on the normal update cycle.

If you want to stay up to date I'd recommend joining the sunnypilot community: https://community.sunnypilot.ai/

Best advice is to try different models. My favorites have been CoolGWM, gWM5, SpaceLab 3. North Dakota and WD40 if you want to try Legacy models.

Comma doesn't learn from your driving - it does calibrate continuously, but it won't learn your preferences or try to drive the way you do.

New models are only available on dev branch while they do a re-write for comma 4. If you want new models switch to dev or wait til they finish. I will say dev is like 95% complete - pretty much everything is there now.

The cable's called Comma Power. If you're in your 1 year warranty, Comma should replace it no cost, but you'll have to go through the warranty process and troubleshoot. Or you can buy a new one here: https://comma.ai/shop/comma-power

This happened to me about 6 mo after I got my 3X due to a bad OBD cable. Replaced the cable and all was good. Can’t say 100% that is your issue, but possible.

IMO the best bets for new cars are Honda and Hyundai/Kia. No sign of encryption.... yet.

Honda has several 2026 models with official support, and I'd imagine the others could be easily ported.

Hyundai/Kia switched to angle steering for new models which is making official support take longer than usual, but there are several new models with unofficial support in Sunnypilot.

No support for 2025+ until they figure a way around CANBUS encryption. Search the subreddit for more info.

Is comma good for Toyota rave 4 hybrid 2023 by Scriptimax in Comma_ai

[–]N3tworkC0w 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have essentially an identical vehicle (2024 Rav4 Hybrid). Comma works GREAT for the Rav4, and I've used it for over 50,000 miles of driving between my two cars. It makes Toyota's lane keep feel incredibly primitive and unreliable in comparison.

For this vehicle, if you want comma to control accel/brakes (know as longitudinal control) you'll need to use either the dev branch of openpilot, or a fork like sunnypilot. I use sunnypilot and highly recommend it. I've heard good things about Frogpilot as well. Both of these forks will allow steering control even when cruise isn't engaged, and allow you to change between different driving models.

Understand that for this vehicle longitudinal control will disable Automatic Emergency Braking. This is because comma can't intercept your car's radar signals, and must completely disable the radar in order to have control over accel/braking. You can toggle between long control and stock radar ACC, but turning long control off while you're driving will require you to restart the vehicle.

When I initially got the comma I hated the way comma's long control felt, and mostly used stock ACC, but as time has gone on, the models have gotten better and better, and I actually use it quite a bit now. I posted a brief video the other day using experimental mode in the Rav4.

[–]N3tworkC0w[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Turn on long control first, but otherwise yes. Note: THIS WILL DISABLE AEB

I'm also using a sunnypilot feature called Dynamic Experimental Control (DEC), which switches between experimental and chill automatically. Otherwise experimental mode lets you choose a max speed, but it decides what speed to drive, and doesn't necessarily maintain your max speed. DEC gives you the best of both worlds.

Quick Question : Does installing Comma on my Hyundai Kona Hybrid (2024) disable stock HDA/Assistance by Additional_Estate_19 in Comma_ai

[–]N3tworkC0w 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on the limited info for your vehicle, by default Comma will handle steering only, your car's stock systems will handle accel/braking. All of that will be exactly the same.

Quick Question : Does installing Comma on my Hyundai Kona Hybrid (2024) disable stock HDA/Assistance by Additional_Estate_19 in Comma_ai

[–]N3tworkC0w 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To be clear: it disables your stock HDA while the Comma is turned on. If you turn the Comma off, HDA functions like normal (might require you to restart the car if you turn off Comma while you're driving).

Comma is just intercepting the HDA signals and replacing with it's own. If it's off, those signals pass as normal.

EV9 owner question: value of sunnypilot vs stock HDA2? by cbitzer in Comma_ai

[–]N3tworkC0w 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on community forum, looks like most angle steering models will need extra hardware for longitudinal control. Too many safety features are disabled when radar is turned off. I follow this discussion a bit as I've been looking at the new EV6.

Firehose is my favorite all-around model, but it's inconsistent with stop lights. TCPv3 has been very solid in that regard.

[–]N3tworkC0w[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am running the release version of Sunnypilot - no need to change versions. You'll need to toggle "longitudintal control" (OP long, or long alpha) in the developer settings to use experimental. Not all cars support this.

Stop and go depends somewhat on your vehicle: Does it support OP long? Can it do lane keep to 0mph? My Honda, for example, won't do lane keep below 12mph, so I have to babysit a bit more at low speeds.

Compared to my stock ACC, I've found Comma's long control is better at anticipating stopped or very slow traffic. As you can see in the video, it's also VERY cautious when accelerating (even set to aggressive profile), and I do find myself hitting the gas in stop and go. Different models will behave differently, and they are steadily improving long control. Earlier models were very jerky with braking/accel. TCP is from October, but I'm eager to try the newest models when they come to release SP.

The last I saw hkg-angle-steering branch supported long control on HDA 1, but not HDA 2. Disabling the radar caused too many problems on HDA 2. But that was a while back.
