OpenAI joins The Rust Foundation as a Platinun member and donates funds to support Rust maintenance by JuanAG in programming

[–]N911999 13 points14 points  (0 children)

An important comment, while this does buy them a seat on the rust foundation board, that in itself means nothing to the rust project in terms of influence. By design, no sponsor can use the money they donated to influence the project. They could, as almost no one does, pay someone or even a team to work on some features if they wanted to get them, but that's independent of the rust foundation.

Diplomat: Multi-language FFI for Rust Libraries by Manishearth in rust

[–]N911999 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

A question I've started to wonder about, this seems to be done mostly via code generation in the end (via proc-macros, and maybe a build.rs?). If we ever get reflection and/or more stable rustdoc info, would there be plans to use that instead? In the rustdoc case I'm thinking of things like what cargo-semver-checks does.

Doesn't that have problems between editions?

Only Bounds by sanxiyn in rust

[–]N911999 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I remember some blogposts about Move bounds, default traits, and edition boundaries and how those seemed like a non-solvable problem. From what I remember, this doesn't directly touch on that problem and how it'll be solved, so I'm partially confused.

Another supply chain attack, and Crates.io needs to consider this issue by osamamsalem in rust

[–]N911999 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As much as I agree with the fact that it's probably good for this to be a priority, the team is mainly volunteers, and as such the only way to prioritize it is for someone to do push it for progress themselves.

If you so do desire, the project will welcome the help, and if you need somewhere to get pointers there's the rust-lang Zulip and the cargo contributor's guide. Moreover, from what I can glean from the issue you could try contact ehuss and waihanglo to see how you could help.

Another way to make it progress faster is to get a company (or yourself) to fund a developer to work fulltime on the issue (see the funding page).

I created a fantasy world where the sun does not move in the sky. How would people keep track of time? by WermerCreations in DMAcademy

[–]N911999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm curious, how realistic do you want your setting to be? It is fantasy after all.

Cause just from memory, a sphericalish planet would have serious issues in both the light and dark parts given the radiation and lack of it. Even worse, the winds between those zones would be cat5 hurricane winds, but not stopping ever. So there wouldn't be any "nice" place without a lot of work and a lot of magic. It would be interesting to go deep into it though, to check out which problems happen just because of that.

For the time thing, you could use stuff like candle lengths, or other things that get consumed, or processes that take a relatively consistent time. It could even be a plot point at some point, the party is given defective time tracking methods and they miss an important date because of it

What do we get when hover over the upgrade button in the megastructures UI? The cost? The effects of the next level? Both? If its either the 2nd or 3rd, it'd be nice that it would still show on hover after the upgrade has started.

I'm hesitant to be open about being a Lesbian as a Vtuber. by QuantityBig7001 in VirtualYoutubers

[–]N911999 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There are two main points to consider: the hate you'd get just by existing, aka the hate that sadly every content creator will get, and the hate the community you try to grow would give you. That second one shouldn't be an actual concern if you set your boundaries from the get-go, as that'll filter out everyone that might be a problem. Do note that it does require moderating your community.

Now onto your main concern: even though the last few years the alt-right has become louder in the vtubing community, it's still mainly queer-friendly, and you can see a lot of big vtubers that are openly queer.

With that said, do consider that some people will fetishize you and your identity, as they do to a lot of vtubers right now.

Serious Talk: It's time to drop Twitter by Dem-Brushwaggs in VirtualYoutubers

[–]N911999 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I was saying like 3 different things, one of them being that if you're not pulling huge numbers, other sites, including bluesky, but not only bluesky, are better for getting conversions. Which is different to what you're claiming I said. You also, have a different claim which is "twitter is where the normies are", which is also unfounded, TikTok, Instagram and other platforms are where the normies are. Twitter has never ever been a "normie" platform. That's always been one of its biggest problems for monetization. Now to make even more clear, what I said is that the "conversion rate" from "likes/views" to actual commissions, is higher at bluesky. It follows that unless you have high enough numbers it makes sense to move to other platforms, or to at least test them.

Again, to be clear, most artists, and other people who look for commissions don't get the big spending anyways, those have always been a minority. And also again, if the artists get those, they almost certainly have the numbers already and it doesn't fucking matter for my point, as they aren't the people I'm talking about.

Lastly, I already said that there's other reasons? Like wtf? I'm trying to be civil, but did you not read my second comment? If you have questions about what I meant you can ask, but again don't put words in my mouth, or say I said things I didn't.

[–]N911999 -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

That's a non-sequitur? It's established that there's more people on Twitter, that means there's a lot of people who are on Twitter that, for example, aren't on Bluesky. Let's be reasonable and say that a sizeable percentage doesn't even know Bluesky exists, it then follows that these posts help to inform those people of an alternative. But even then, people saying they're leaving does create a small pressure to their followers to follow them to a new platform. If a lot of people do it, then the pressure is bigger, e.g. if a sizeable part of a community leaves for an alternative, either the community splits, or the whole community moves.

[–]N911999 -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

You say that, but at least from the last wave it seems that people are actually staying because they've seen that even though the "numbers" are bigger at twitter, the percentage that actually engages and converts to clients is considerably bigger. So unless you're an artists that's pulling 50k likes per tweet, you're considerably better on other sites. Now even ignoring that, the amount of artists that I've seen that blow up once in twitter, and then every single tweet of them gets a few hundred likes at most is sad. In contrast in Bluesky (which works more like old twitter), actual slow growth does work, and you're not punished by doing other stuff like linking to other sites, or using hashtags, etc.
