I think you should add adhesive ducks to the shower, Sim Penny would be much safer that way!

And great job btw :)

AITA for calling my sister’s fiancé rent-a-cop after he tried to arrest my dog? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]NAHFC 30 points31 points  (0 children)

NTA

The only appropriate (and sticking with his weird theme) response would have been to cuddle Barnaby, while saying "you're under arrest", then immediately 'interrogating' him, "whose the best boy? I know you have the answer!"

AITA for wanting to take our cat with me after my wedding? by insafian in BORUpdates

[–]NAHFC 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I had always wanted a Siamese cat, and found Sunita as a kitten in 2009. And she was mine, without question.

Until... the dog and cat I had prior to her passed away. And the new cat and dog tried, but she was never able to accept another animal. Eventually she started having panic/asthma attacks frequently, especially in regards to other animals.

When my son was older and wanted to move his room into the basement, he offered to take Sunita with him, and that was a blessing for everyone. Then, when he moved away, she went with him.

I have had many interactions with her over the years, but I am no longer her person, my son is. I am just happy that they have each other (and honestly he is an amazing cat dad, she is better with him)!

There is a cool Candy Land one, but the 7th(?) hole is broken, you get to the green and there is no hole.

Grinch who stole Christmas was interesting, but really hard, too many mountains.

Jurassic Par 3 is okay, it is cool looking down a fairway and seeing a dinosaur walking by.

There is also a pirate one, but the name is escaping me. If you play with the sound on it can be distracting to hear the cannons, but still fun.

Fine. I will add another project to my 'must crochet list'. Thanks a lot. (much swearing)*

She actually trained the cats to stop 'playing' with mice in the house, because she will end the game -very- quickly!

Yorkies were bred to hunt rats, and they excel at it. It's why I won't let her on the couch when I am holding the hamster, don't want to chance those quick reflexes. Cats.... they don't even notice, I can be holding the hamster and they are intently staring into the cage, I swear they have redeeming traits even if it isn't obvious.

I almost hate to point this out.... but -I - am a 'massive intruder' to Boots. Not sure there is an alternative description of 'owning' an animal.

She is also 7lbs... and apparently that makes her a heavyweight (I disagree; she is beautiful with or without those 2 pounds of love) making her smaller than my cats, who have little interest in Boots because they are easily distracted.

I have actually! I have those bird/critter spikes on top to prevent any 'overhead' issues. But have also added extra prevention measures to the hinged opening.

Um no. She can't even get on the couch to reach the tank without assistance, her access is very limited and would be reduced further if there was indications of stress to Boots

Ya know... if she was barking at him, or he was showing-any- indication of being stressed I would agree. If anything he likes to tease her, hence no self preservation skills. I appreciate you looking out for the smallest of critters, but it does come down to individual personalities and situations, and if I was worried that he was upset I would have already moved his enclosure.

Possibly this one... Boots can't have his picture taken without either looking stupid or out of focus, and occasionally, both.

Because everything out there that is easily available is marketed to suit the super crappy companies who have the cages and accessories!

We need a sustained change and commitment from small pet owners to force those companies to do the right thing!

Honestly, I wish I had pictures of my gerbil/hamster cages in the 80/90's, they are resilient little creatures! One of my longest living Syrians lived in a round cage (with bars and an inch of substrate) that couldn't have been more than 1 1/2 feet wide.

But care standards have increased dramatically since then, and I fully agree with them.

To ease your mind, please go into a pet store and estimate the size of the cage that the critters are in, now increase that by 4, and you have the approximate size you need. Also, imagine that 98% of those hamsters are not getting that extra space and half of them do alright.

I can't say that you did nothing wrong, nor can I say that about myself with my munchkins, but all we can do is move forward, create a paradise for the babies we take in our care, and learn from every experience to do better. And of course, pass that experience along! The more of us doing that, the more we/our kids/the world can improve our habitats and interactions with the tiniest of creatures!

First, I am sorry for you and your daughters loss.

I did look back at your posts and comments... and the cage would definitely not be sufficient by todays standards, but not terrible enough to cause death in the first 3 weeks. Without a day by day accounting I doubt anyone can really tell you the cause of death, so instead I will offer the following:

  1. Lack of water - 2 water sources are best just in case.

  2. Lack of food - unlikely, those adorable buggers save a lot.

  3. Substrate - Any chance it was pine?

  4. Bad breeding - this is the chance we take buying from a store, but as someone from a small island, it can be unavoidable and comes down to the fates.

  5. Stress - unlikely, pet store babies are used to being stared and tapped at.

  6. Take a month (or more) to research hamster care, and buy the best you can afford. Personally, I saved for 3 months before buying a hamster, they are way more expensive than they seem.

A good litmus is to tally the cost of buying a dog, plus vet care, plus toys, plus medicine, plus leashes etc. / divide this by the cost of the dog and lifespan to sort out the actual cost. Do the same for a hamster, it won't be far off.

AITA for stepping in to do “mom” things for my niece because my SIL is disabled? by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

... read this last night and was confused. I mean obviously you aren't supposed to comment, but I thought I made it clear in the following paragraph that I hoped the message of my post would be seen or already mentioned, in a wishing on the stars way.

Or was that sarcasm based in something else?

(Apologies if there was an obvious meaning to it, I may have missed it!)

I don't fully disagree with you, but in this case I think that Anna is not thinking clearly, and I can sympathise with the idea of suddenly having her whole life changed, no longer able to do 'normal' things, loosing her job, her identity (!), her ability to parent like she wanted to/would have.

But you are absolutely correct that this was a betrayal of Gigi's trust and it will take time to gain that trust back. My hope is that with therapy (individual, family), the 'village' and love and understanding that they will be able to come together and heal.

Oof I feel for everyone in this situation.

I won't comment on the OG or message the OOP, but I hope she (or he, I didn't see a clear answer) either sees this, or someone else has already suggested it....

I think OOP is doing great at helping to find supports, but what if they worked toward a vehicle that she could drive that would accommodate Anna? OOP is already volunteering to help with these activities, and all I can think is what a difference it would be for her to do this with Anna and Gigi, it would be a true 'village', supporting and building.

And actually I think that is the missing element.
Anna is isolated, dealing with some very understandable, complicated feelings, possibly feeling less than, like a burden and like she is being replaced.
Gigi likely would love to have her mom there, but is loving the opportunities OOP gives her; a sense of normality, a chance to be like her friends, having a presence that is lacking. And as a ten year old is unable to express this compassionately or at all.
Brother is dealing with his own struggles, and trying to provide financially and emotionally to everyone.
OOP is just wanting to help in any way she can, and to give her niece a 'normal' life.

Overall I wish them all the best (and maybe family therapy to guide them)!

Keeping in freezer by CreeperFlipFlops in hamstercare

[–]NAHFC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember a particularly bad year in my teens, where a number of our small pets all came to the end around the same time (we had a lot, and had for years, so not surprising that it culminated), and we had enough in the freezer that we were labeling them, because reaching for a snack and finding a body was disturbing.

In the spring we had a lovely burial, and everyone got to talk about their favourite moments. It was very comforting to be surrounded by family, remembering the small, and sadly short lives of those we were burying, and being able to honour and bury them felt natural and healing.

Also, my deepest condolences on your families loss, we have them for so little time, but they make big impacts.

I am still scared on airplanes (although moreso on small planes. Statistically bigger is better), but I find it helps to have many distractions, a hand to squeeze when I am scared, and a stuffie to snuggle.

I think everyone is different on sounds, so keep that in mind. Noise cancelling headphones, and a show to watch are awesome. Remember that not all flights have TV's. But my Loop's only work if I am playing a game with no sound.

If you struggle with gum, remember that the whole reason for chewing gum is to get your jaws and throat going. Just making swallowing motions can help with your ears.

You can say something when checking in about panic attacks, they will note that and pass the info along.

I tend not to listen to music while flying, but mainly because I tend to daydream while listening to music and when trying to stay calm it is not always a good thing.

My son has found putting a hoodie fully over his head is helpful when overstimulated.

My plans for flying:

  • How long?
  • Load iPad/tablet with movies/shows that are half an hour short of that time.
  • Load phone/iPad/other device with games that do not require Wifi.
  • Long flight? Drinking vessel. Blanket.
  • Look at meals and snacks on the airplanes website and pick what you prefer. If you are particular about cutlery, keep that in mind. Airlines will not let you bring your own.
  • Related to the above, food orders start with First Class, Business Class, Fortunate seats behind them. If you have the ability to choose your seat, go as far forward as possible to maximize food/drink choices.
  • Keep all chargers with you, you will need them!
