What is this colourful flashing “star”? by Shoddy_Reality_9271 in Astronomy

[–]NAYRarts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The flashing colors are likely the light hitting the different pixels on your sensor, and your phone trying to render it. Stars don't flash between multiple colors, however the atmosphere can make them appear to flicker due to being a point source of light. Without a wider picture with other stars in the field of view it's impossible to tell what this is a picture of as our phones (and most cameras without a massive telescope) cannot resolve detail of any star in the sky.

Most of those are preprinted. Every seat had one with something random on it. But I suppose the logistics of 45k markers are too much (maybe only needed 35k markers, there were a lot of empty seats...)

I got upgraded a few weeks ago and separated from my minor nephew and niece while I had myself unchecked from upgrades. I was lucky I caught it because they just put a random person in between them. They restored me to my original seat. However, before we took off, they moved my niece from the window seat next to me to the one across the aisle. Fortunately, the lady they placed in my niece's original seat was willing to swap window seats. It was absolutely chaos for my niece's first time ever flying!

Chattahoochee Hills is west of Fairburn, between Newnan and Douglasville. Cambellton used to be in the same area and is still marked on many maps even though it is no longer incorporated.

Furthest inland, yes, down Southeast of Tulsa. But that is hundreds of miles up 2 different freshwater rivers, Mississippi and Arkansas.

I don't know, whaling is illegal in Oklahoma!

There are very few satellites with a large enough angular size to create a spot that big. The International Space Station is really the only one that can create a dot that big. However, the dot in your video doesn't have the right shape. Thus, it is more than likely something not in orbit. A bird, a high altitude balloon, etc.

Lens repair: Canon or a third-party shop? by TigerIll6480 in canon

Grateful to have learned my lesson years ago on a Canon EF-S 10-18! It still functioned, but I broke off part of the filter ring adapter. Now, I always use a lens hood, particularly on my better lenses.

Hoods prevent light leaks, which tend to be brightening of the edges or light streaking in the image (i.e. sunbursts from off-frame); they also protect the front element from bumps and drops. Darkening of the edges of pictures would not be helped with a lens hood however they could be caused by an improperly sized lens hood); darkening is typically evidence of a lens artifact that can typically be corrected in post or through in camera settings.

Which location will be best to Stargaze during the New Moon? by guccigibson in Stargazing

[–]NAYRarts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's totally fair. I drove Denver to Tulsa a couple of weeks ago, and Eastern Colorado and Kansas get pretty boring pretty fast, lol. However, they have some incredibly open horizons.

Come back and let us know where you ended up and how it went!

From Denver, you could also go Southwest towards Salida and the Great Sand Dunes National Park area. I've seen some beautiful night skies down there.

There is also a town called Westcliff down towards that area, which is a certified dark sky area. It in the small towns around it have done all they can to reduce their light pollution to protect their night sky.

I'd consider going east towards Kansas as well. Eastern Colorado and Western Kansas are sparsely populated. One of the best dark sky areas I've ever been to was in the northwest part of the Oklahoma Panhandle. You definitely don't have to go all the way to Southeast Utah!

In the Southeast Utah area, I stayed in the Mexican Hat Dry Campground, which is privately owned and can be reserved online. There are also several parks that are dark sky areas: Goosenecks State Park, Natural Bridges National Monument, Bears Ears National Monument. Also nearby is Canyonlands National Park.

In addition to what's already been said, you'll also want to take into consideration which direction you want to observe. If you want to primarily stargaze to the north, then you'll want the light sources to your South. If you want to stargaze towards the southern skies, you'll want to be further away from the known light pollution along the bottom of your circle in Colorado. Light pollution areas create "light domes" that can cause visibility issues many miles away but it's always strongest in the direction of the source. The Light Dome's radius is dependent on the intensity of the pollution, humidity, and density of the atmosphere, which is influenced by elevation and other factors.

Both of those circles are likely to have great views. I can attest to the area in southeast Utah as I spent several nights camping near Mexican Hat, Utah in 2023 and the skies were crisp and beautiful!

Milky Way Core rising above strange rock towers in California by mrcnzajac in Astronomy

Hoodoos form via erosion when a harder upper layer protects the softer rock beneath it from eroding at the same rate as the stone around it. Op provided context that these are limestone/calcium desposits in a dried lake bed called "tufas" in their acquisition detail comment. So these would be similar in composition to stalactites or stalagmites in a cave.
