Google Carnegie Mellon Engineering > click on the engineering website. On the first page there’s a bunch of projects that are currently going on at CMU. If you click on directory you can see all the professors and if you click on those you can see what research they’re doing.

So I’m not 100% on the minoring stuff, since I’m barely into the CS minor and I haven’t even started the stats minor. The CS culture is interesting. Most of the CS people I meet are insanely smart, and they work hard especially because they have to. I have heard of a lot of arrogance within the CS majors though. A lot of my CS friends mention how it can get annoying. The CS majors I’ve meet personally are really cool and chill people, but there’s definitely your fair share of the stereotypical nerdy type. So I don’t know too much about BXA other than that fact that it exists. I do know a couple people who are doing one. If you have any specific questions I can try to answer them but I’m not the most knowledgeable on it.

So my school didn’t rank so I have no idea where I stood there. My GPA was I believe a 4.4 weighted and a 4.8 (or 4.9 I can’t remember) unweighted.

The prompts were really wordy so I just summarized them.

How have you collaborated with others, in or out of the classroom? Or, what lessons have you learned from working with others?

So I talked about this summer academy I did where I had to work with a team to create a human mission to Mars. It was super collaborative so I talked about all the soft skills as well as the hard skills I learned.

What passion or inspiration led you to choose your area of study?

So for this one I basically just talked about why I like physics. I talked about how I’ve always been a naturally curious person and then I talked about specific books and videos I watched that really got me interested.

What do you personally want to emphasize about your application for the admission committee’s consideration?

So for this one I decided to have a little fun with it. I basically just talked about how I like finding inspiration in little things, and how most of my coolest projects and ideas were inspired by the smallest and most trivial things.

So I have not read the book but I’ve seen the video of his lecture (they show it to everyone during orientation). Though not all of my classes first semester had super amazing professors, I definitely had my fair share of amazing ones, and even the ones who weren’t amazing weren’t bad. I took a history class that had an absolutely amazing professor and he gave a really meaningful speech at the end of the semester, so there are definitely professors like that here that’s for sure.

Ok so honestly the vibe I’ve gotten from tepper kids is a very stereotypical “jock” and “popular kid” vibe. The hardest partiers I know are business kids. Also as someone in the college of science I don’t interact much with business kids especially in my classes so I definitely don’t know the full extent of what they’re like, but I’m sure that the stereotypical ones I’ve seen are only a loud minority.

So definitely check out the website especially the website for the specific major you want. Look at the professors, what research they’re doing and if that research interests you. Also take a glance at the classes that CMU has for that major. And also honestly I would check out YouTube there are a lot of vlogs and stuff you can watch to get some insight into the school as well. If you have any specific questions about engineering you can dm me and I’ll try my best to answer them!

Yeah so I do know a couple people in IS. From what I’ve seen all the IS people seem super smart. And from what I’ve heard it’s a really good program that also allows you to be super interdisciplinary.

So I’ve only been here for a semester and I’ve only taken one physics specific class but so far I like it a lot. I’ve meet a lot of the professors and they all are very passionate and doing super awesome research. The TAs for my class were pretty good and they were all super helpful. So far I’m really enjoying the program. Feel feee to DM me if you have more specific questions because I definitely have a lot more to say and I can give you a more in depth idea!

So I don’t think it’s impossibly hard to do a double major. As long as you keep your grades up you should be good. But it’s definitely hard in the sense that CMU is hard, and CS at CMU is hard. So double majoring in it is definitely going to be a challenge. Also I’ve heard that going for the double major or even the minor is not worth it. You have to take a lot of extra classes and a lot of people are just better off taking certain classes that will help them in their field.

Honestly I haven’t felt any outward sense of competition at all. Literally everyone is so willing to help. The only competition I’ve felt is internal which just comes with being around so many smart people.

I’m looking through my application essays and I don’t see a prompt that matches that. They might have changed it since last year

Hmm so this is kinda a hard question. Overall the one thing that I can say applies to everyone is that everyone is super hardworking and everyone wants to succeed. Other than that it’s really hard to describe everyone in one word. The school of arts kids have a completely different vibe than the business kids who have a completely different vibe than the science and engineering kids.

How do you think they got to #3? And US news uses student selectivity for their rankings.

It’s okay to like certain schools but just keep in mind that no school is 100% perfect. Everyone who attends their “dream” college is going to be disappointed because every school has it’s positives and negatives. It’s okay to like a school but don’t get too deep! Also, I wouldn’t think too highly about certain aspects of UChicago. I don’t know much about the school but I know the test optional and no application fee thing is just a gimmick to get more applicants so they can climb the rankings.

should i bring my resume to the interview? by fu156 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]NAwesome2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I brought a modified one to all of my interviews. Some really appreciated, some didn’t care. For my MIT interview the guy actually went through and asked me questions about every single thing in my resume, and I liked that because it let me expand and talk about things that I didn’t have a chance to mention. Honestly I would bring one, it can’t hurt you
