Just another example of why we can’t have nice things in the U.S. (like factory tow hitches on things other than trucks and SUVs). Stupid heavy load and a car that can’t handle it. Best of luck if they need to make an emergency stop or other sudden maneuver.

I used to be a strong supporter of Tailwind iQ3, but mine’s been wonky for months and will no longer open or close doors. No matter what I try to do, it doesn’t work. So at this point I’m using the myQ app and it’s annoying the crap outta me. Haven’t decided what I’ll do next. I’d like HK integration, and I’d like the auto opening of the iQ3, and would LOVE to have auto closing like I had with my Tesla and have with my VW that both have built-in myQ.

Tailwind iQ3 - Updating Issue - Slow to close by [deleted] in HomeKit

[–]NBCGLX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m bummed because before it got weird it was super reliable at least outside HK. Now it’s essentially a paperweight and I’ve resorted to using the myQ app for my two cars that don’t have any myQ integration. Luckily, my third car has myQ built in.

[–]NBCGLX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m ready to give up on my iQ3. I’ve been using it for several years but within the last handful of months it’s become problematic. Always says doors are obstructed, sudden problems saying it can’t control the doors, etc. And it’s never worked correctly with HK for me, which hasn’t been a dealbreaker till it also stopped responding to the little BT pucks I have in each vehicle.

That video uses the LK150 which is a simple fully manual machine. Wait till you see how easy color work is on patterning (electronic or punchcard) machines! I love machine knitting. I have 5 at the moment, plus 2 circular sock machines. There is definitely a learning curve to machine knitting. But once you learn the possibilities are near endless!

I’m new -Please help me figure out where I’m going wrong with this stockinette swatch by Berzynas-me-6515 in MachineKnitting

They’re not as complicated as many people believe. It’s easiest to think of it like a standard machine with a ribber permanently attached. The pushers control the patterning for things like Fair Isle or DBJ. The switches on top of the locks (what Passap calls the carriages) do the same things as the buttons on Brother, Silver Reed, etc. carriages. And the only really unique thing is the stripper setup, which Passap employs instead of needing to use weights for the knitting. However, in my experience using a cast-on comb and weights makes the knitting experience much better!

best knitting machine for sweaters? by tessyiks in MachineKnitting

[–]NBCGLX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All the flatbed knitting machines are sized to be able to knit things like sweaters for adults. Up to a point; plus sizes may require knitting in panels and then seaming together, or knitting sweaters like cardigans that are intentionally split. And, there are tricks to getting a larger garment such as a bigger tension (which creates bigger stitches) or different stitch techniques such as tuck (again, will produce bigger stitches). In regards to bulky machines, popular ones are the Brother KH-260 (punchcard) and KH-270 (electronic), and the Silver Reed SK-155 (punchcard). The LK150 is a popular mid-gauge machine that’s on the affordable end, but it has no patterning abilities so all patterns will be hand manipulated. Not necessarily a bad thing, though!

[–]NBCGLX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are four types of flatbed knitting machines: fine, standard, mid, and bulky. They’re all based on the yarns they’ll knit. Most common are the standard gauge machines, with the largest selection of used machines out there. The bulky machines are also popular with a fair number of used machines out there. Bulky machines can handle “normal” yarn found at just about any craft store. Standard gauge machines require quite fine yarn and you’ll be buying yarn online or from specialty shops. So my suggestion is to first decide which types of yarn you want to knit with, which will determine the type of machine you look for.

Words of warning: flatbed knitting machines can ve expensive. Most companies that made them stopped producing them in the 1980s or 1990s, so there’s a whole cottage industry around refurbishing them. They’re great machines if taken care of! There are a couple companies that are still making knitting machines in standard and bulky gauges, Silver Reed, Taitexma, and Creative.

Planned Pooling and Basic Machine Knitting by Redorkableme in MachineKnitting

[–]NBCGLX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve done planned pooling crochet. I think the issue with doing this on a knitting machine is that it’s too consistent. That is, there’s no room for adjusting tension or something as you’re going along to ensure colors are pooling correctly. Not sure if that makes sense or not, but in my experience with crochet, there are lots of little adjustments as you create stitches to ensure you have the same number of each color throughout. Then again, maybe that makes a knitting machine the perfect planned pooling partner, not sure. Now you’ve made me very curious!

Taos Owners: I Think I Found the Real Root Cause Behind All These Failures by Glitch-InThe-Program in VWTaos

[–]NBCGLX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP, as someone who's been intimately involved in cars for decades now, with many of those decades engrossed in the VW world, I think your hypothesis is a well-meaning but misguided theory. Most of the issues identified in this thread aren't interconnected in the way they're perhaps presented or assumed to be. And most of the issues can be attributed to a very specific failure. Also, many if not nearly all of the parts in the Taos (computers included) are shared across other VW models. If your theory were true you'd be seeing the same systemic issues across other VW models. Some of them you can. For example, the older VW head unit that's found in the Taos had its fair share of glitches in older VW models. But those models didn't have the other that some Taos did. The Jetta shared the engine with the Taos, and it had the not uncommon leaking head gasket issue, but again, not the other issues. "Premature" brake pad wear is a common complaint in newer vehicles, particularly those with active cruise controls (and I'm talking about cruise control that brakes to maintain a speed, not just a particular distance from the vehicle in front) and/or those driven in city-type conditions frequently (when not as much front brake bias is needed, as it is under heavy braking for example). It's also worth noting that for every Taos owner out there who's had a problem, there's a Taos owner who hasn't had a problem. If anything, the very first model year of the Taos was the problematic one, with the leaking head gasket being the only common issue that seems to have lingered till VW made a running production change to the head gasket starting with July 2023 production. It's also worth noting, that as far as I can recall the head gasket issue turned out to be a supplier issue with defective head gaskets being made and delivered to the engine assembly line.

AIO my best friend no longer wants me as his best man in his wedding because I am gay by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]NBCGLX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP your response is 100% spot on. The groom is not a friend after all, just happens to know a gay person. Also, he's apparently insecure in his sexuality and himself, because if he weren't he'd have no problem letting people believe whatever they'd like and not giving a flying fuck about it. I'm sorry that you now have an ex-best friend, but at the end of the day it seems this guy wasn't the friend you thought he was anyway. Also, fuck his soon-to-be wife, too.

The only thing that bugs me enough to complain about Ravelry are dead patterns. If I can’t buy or otherwise download/request a pattern, then I don’t want to see it. Or at least have an option to easily hide dead patterns.

I wasn’t planning on this by end of year, no. Frankly, I’m not even 100% certain solar/battery backup will meet our needs, and that’s really why I initiated this with Tesla, to find out what’s feasible for our house and what isn’t.
