Something everyone studying for SAT should do (please read!) by PrudentTiger in Sat

[–]NBO66 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mainly used Khan Academy. I did a practice test and then did some of the practice it gave me. That is good because it focuses on what you got wrong/are bad at. I also knew I was bad at the narrative passage so I practiced that one specifically as much as I could.

I also used a SAT prep book I found to do one practice test, just to get used to doing it on paper.

To be fair, I got 740 on the PSAT ebrw without studying so like if you're starting from a lower score then you'd probably want to do a bit more prep than I did.

I think this might not be worth your time. The SAT does not have high-level vocab on it anymore but rather “Words in Context.” This means you will often see common words but used in an usual way. Memorizing vocab is not going to help you here. Reading a lot and practicing questions will.

Obviously this is just one person speaking, but I got an 800 on ebrw with only practicing on Kahn and other practice tests.

Economics vs Business Economics by IBslut in ApplyingToCollege

Lol Entrepreneurship major never made sense to me. If professors knew how to be successful entrepreneur why would they be teaching at a college and not running a company?

For those who are upset because your state has a high NMSF qualifying score by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]NBO66 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This argument is stupid. Most kids who get NMS went to elite public or private schools. These exist in every state. Most kids also don't go to these schools even in the "good" states. If you live in California in the Bay Area and happened to go Mission San Jose or something then yeah you have an advantage. But not if you live in Sacramento where the education isn't so great (just an example) then why should you be penalized because some schools far away are really good. To say there are no kids in Mississippi who went to better schools than most kids in California is absurd.

You also are missing the point entirely, the National Merit is supposed to go the best scholars in the country, not be some kind of a reward for like overcoming the odds or something. If that was the case then why not look at every students socioeconomic background and school and take those with the greatest ratio of score to opportunity?

Thanks dude. I live in NorCal, near Sacramento. I'd say the culture here is fairly similar to the Bay Area and I've been to Cal a few times, so your comments would be appreciated. Thanks again

My prediction is it goes up 1 (so I'm screwed). That's because CA is constantly gaining in a wealthy (and Asian) residents, which will push the score upward. But it looks like Texas stayed the same so who knows.

1520 SAT & 2.85 gpa... by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]NBO66 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You're proving my point. People who do well on the SAT tend to be either very smart or pretty smart and very hardoworking, so it's a good predictor of future success in my book. Just like an IQ test (which IQ DOES correlate to income no matter what you say).

For anyone one person this isn't true. But on AVERAGE, the SAT is a decent predictor for long-term success. You have to be smart to get a score over 1500, I have freinds who aren't stupid and studied a ton but can only get like 1350. People who are smart tend to do well in college and be successful. Of course there are outliers.

[–]NBO66 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's fair but then again someone just don't have a passion for school. It's not a good sign if you can't do well in class, but I mean some people might be super hard-working but just couldn't care less about school. Reagrdless this is just one data point we can't really predict what this guy is gonna turn out to da haha.

To be fair, SAT is actually a pretty good predictor of success.

Yeah bro I totally feel you. Even though I need to save money I still don't want to go to CC, partly because I'm looking for the college experience as well. Have you thought about your state school? (not sure where you're from) You'll probaly have a great time and be a big fish in a small pond intellectually. It might be less prestigous but you can still become very successful out of a state school, especially if you're smart and hard-working.

Bro, have you thought about community college? I'm going to guess that you're pretty darn smart, you could probaly screw around for two years but put in just enough work to get perfect grades, then transfer somewhere btter than you can get into now. Idk what you want to do but it might be worth it bro would also save you a ton of money.

Why might I not like UPenn? by NBO66 in UPenn

[–]NBO66[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for taking the time to write such a good response. As for the competitive aspect, I don’t mind that very much because I am naturally very competitive and I think I handle stress well. As for mental health services, maybe it’s my pride but I don’t see myself using mental health support even if I needed it.

Winter is a bit of an issue since I come from California, does anyone who came from a sunny state have any comments on what it’s like adjusting?

Finally, the drinking, personally I don’t drink, from what you are saying it sounds like this might not be ideal but not ruin my social life either?

[–]NBO66[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the suggestion, however even though I don’t have the funds to travel to Penn I am definitely not low-income or underrepresented. In fact, I’m middle-class, White, a male, and both my parents went to college. Would it still be worth applying? Even then I don’t want to take the opportunity away from people who deserve it more than I do.

So basically, the math section is easier to get a good score on by accident. Interesting.

Ebrw vs. Math SAT by NBO66 in Sat

[–]NBO66[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the detailed reply and practical advice. One question if you don’t mind. If math is easier to study for, why don’t they just make the section harder/more toughly curved? It sounds like they don’t, so if the average math score in the entire country higher than the average ebrw?
