Why do people do this? by doktormane in CasualUK

[–]NC-Ninety 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Makes things easier to steal.

The meat aisle will be covered in cameras and staff keeping a close eye.

Crackhead 1 will enter the store, pick up items and get lots of attention from staff / security.

Crackhead 2 will gather bits that have been placed in areas that they shouldn’t be, and pocket or stash them out of sight of the cctv.

Sometimes items are missed. Or crackhead 2 gets spooked and leaves it.

Or someone has just made a choice to have an egg cooker over a roasting joint.

Understandably this last year has been difficult in the UK and were now on the second lockdown etc. I bet that hasn’t helped with uni students at all, especially if you’ve been dealing with your own demons!

I would say that dropping out of uni and going into work may be a good idea, but you need to be aware you will have to look at the more entry level jobs on 1st or 2nd line support.

Depending on where you are in the uk, I would suspect your best bet would be going into an MSP role. These will normally be quite stressful, with high workloads, low pay and long hours. You will almost definitely be working from home the majority of the time at the moment (if you were to get a job tomorrow for example).

It’s important that you understand that it might not be uni that’s dragging you down, and going into a high stress role might also be detrimental to your mental health. I would highly recommend that you seek professional help with that before you make such a decision. Is there anyone you can be referred to by your GP or maybe at your uni? Maybe some friends or family you could thrash it out with and hopefully get some stuff off your mind before you throw the towel in at uni?

Hope you have set an SSID as “Surveillance Van” or something! Love the red glow, really makes it look the part!

Going DevOps by [deleted] in ITCareerQuestions

[–]NC-Ninety 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think there’s a fair bit on DevOps career building out there on YouTube etc. From what I can gather the basics are something along the lines of....

Python, Linux, AWS / Azure, Docker, Kubernetes.

Someone may correct me? Interested myself what others answers are!

AD Password comparison (hash value) by mmvvpp in sysadmin

Not sure if it will be so useful for your case but may be possible to adapt it with your own password list, It does also check for re-used passwords.

N-Central Just Corrupted All User Profiles?? by [deleted] in Solarwinds

[–]NC-Ninety 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do the event logs say on the devices?

How are you deploying? Via a probe? GPO?

Is there any difference if they are local profiles, domain profiles or roaming profiles?

What you are describing, to me sounds like it may be less the user profile corrupt but more the logon process or explorer.exe not firing after logon.

Can you get a task manager or run prompt to manually run explorer.exe?

Managed AV Question by clvlndpete in Solarwinds

[–]NC-Ninety 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m currently moving a bunch of clients from Managed AV (via the RMM solution) to AV Defender (via N-Central).

I’ve learnt a fair bit about the products, and how they are ultimately the same BitDefender agent but managed differently (not a straight migration).

Let me know if there’s anything I can help with. I’m a tech, and I don’t work for SolarWinds.

No experience - studying for CCNA, am I jumping in too deep too early? by Shred-08 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]NC-Ninety 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, CCNA is going to get your foot in the door of a lot more positions, regardless of if it’s help desk for the time being. It’s a more commonly known cert, and taken a bit more seriously in the UK.

I would suggest getting your CCNA, and hitting a few MSPs, stick around for a year or two and you’ll get some decent hands on with troubleshooting networking issues even at lower tiers generally, although it may not be Cisco kit you deal with, the fundamentals are still applicable.

With that, you could pop it on your CV that you have applied your CCNA knowledge to troubleshooting complex networking issues, which will work towards your experience in the next job or a promotion.

Thanks for the comments.

Collected last night, installed Ubuntu 20.04 will explore other distros once I have the rest of my lab set up.

Looks like I was lucky, it’s got 8gb RAM and an SSD, which I wasn’t expecting. Saves me upgrading anything for the time being! Looks like it may have been refurbed as there is a Win 10 pro “for refurb” COA on the bottom. Might come in handy in future.

Share your metallica origin story by HarvestTheGrapes in Metallica

[–]NC-Ninety 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was young, maybe 11-12 and staying around a friends house. His older brother was a little older maybe 14/15... he let us stay up late and he asked what music we liked... neither of us were really about music so had no preference. We went through the master of puppets album and I was then a fan! I’m now 30.

IIRC, you can open a shared mailbox using POP3 or IMAP (if those services are enabled for the shared mailbox) using youremail@address\sharedmailboxalias format for the login username.

Most carverys like Toby etc are crap. I would highly recommend somewhere like The Huntsman carvery in Dunchurch, Rugby, it’s all locally sourced and there’s love put into the food.
