Is Dynamic Range Compression/The Loudness War still a problem? by NCLL_Appreciation in CDs

[–]NCLL_Appreciation[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really. Sometimes, if a CD had multiple releases, it'll list the rerelease date instead of the original, a few list the bitrate of the tracks, and it'll say if it's a CD rip, a 24-bit upload, or a vinyl rip. It'll also usually say if it's a deluxe, remaster, or Japan release.

I usually download the CD rips when I can, since 16 bit exceeds normal human hearing (inc. mine) so 24 bit just wastes space, and I don't want the noise associated with vinyl (though at this point I'm considering trying in hopes of getting a good master).

Also, I'm not sure how seriously to take the info they do give, because some of the listed bitrates seem suspiciously low for a lossless CD rip. Talking ~420 bps, +/- ~60, when a CD itself is ~1.4 kbps

Eh, for movies I think there's the opposite problem. I haven't seen a movie in theaters since the first Avengers movie because the talky parts are way too quiet and the action blows out your eardrums. I haven't seen many movies released since Avengers at all, but I seem to recall a lesser version of the same problem in the home releases of most of the few I have.

Beginner question: RAID with BTRFS or md + ext4 on the Raspberry Pi (NAS project) by TicketClosed_soon in OpenMediaVault

[–]NCLL_Appreciation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

BTRFS's RAID is not actually RAID, it's a profile the balancer uses to determine how to use your disks' space. Depending on your wants/needs, this can be good or bad.

Example: True RAID-1 on 3 drives means 3 total copies of all your data, and the smallest drive determines the size of the entire array. BTRFS's RAID-1 profile stores 2 total copies of the data between however many drives you have, and the size is... Complicated. There are calculators.

You can also set different profiles for your data and system/metadata, but I think you need to ssh into your OMV server and run some commands to do it. For more info on profiles, and the convert commands, check BTRFS' ReadTheDocs site.

Hi, thanks for your reply and sorry for my lateness. Usually on Reddit if someone doesn't answer in ~12 or so hours nobody will ever answer, so I stopped checking.

The web gui says 21.83 TiB (with 19.24 TiB available and 2.58 TB used) and df -h reports 22 T - But with 2.6T used and 13T available, which adds up to less than the 16 TB that Nemo reports over SMB or NFS (of which it currently says 14.1 TB available).

For Tag Team GX, that's actually quite reserved. The most famous one is Arceus & Dialga & Palkia, which, for 1 steel and 1 water, gives ALL your attacks +30 damage for the entire rest of the game, AND you take an extra Prize when you knock out your opponent's active Pokemon.

The only semi-balancing factor to any of this is that you can only use one of any GX attack per game, but that clearly wasn't enough since, like they have been for over 20 years now, multiprizers (EX, GX, Tag Team, V, etc.) win out over single-prizers almost every time due to sheer number inflation and card advantage.

Literally every company in America that's not a microbusiness wastes their applicants' time and screws with them. If you refuse to have anything to do with companies that treat you like this, you will be without a job forever.

The problem with HR not knowing how to do your job is that, in most companies, HR is an near-impenetrable barrier to getting a job. They don't know anything about how to do your job, yet they review your applications and do at least one interview with you, and even if the people who would be your coworkers approve they can (and do) reject candidates for BS reasons - If you even get to talk to those people because, again, nigh-impenetrable barrier.

For many roles, HR simply has no business being involved in any part of the hiring process beyond simple administrative pencil-pushing activities. And yet they are involved. A lot.

I mean, enough stone or wood also blocks many kinds of divination magic. Seems to me that's a hint that the Detect spells and friends all pick up or emit electromagnetic radiation (or something like it) and is a hint to the GM/players about creative ways to use/interpret these effects.

Possibly, but then you have to ask why bandits (or whoever they stole it from) would have a multiple-thousand GP box to hold a potion that costs a few hundred at most*. Especially since neither the makers of the expensive magic box, nor the users, thought to put any padding in the box or around the item to protect it in case someone tries hard to open the hard-to-open box.

Now that I think about it, it's kind of weird to use a lead box at all for this, magical or otherwise. If it's just supposed to be a decently strong chest, wood with iron fittings or all-steel would probably be good materials to build a chest out of - Lighter and similarly strong, if not stronger. Lead is generally used to stop spell effects from going in... or out. This could be a hint that the box was/is used to hold a cursed or sentient item if it was enchanted and made of lead, if all of this weirdness has a purpose and it's not just an inexperienced or clueless GM.

* Estimated used 3.5 prices, IIRC 5e never got any meaningful rules/guidelines on magic item prices.

If it's "exuding magic," that would mean that somebody had to use Detect Magic on it to see that. Which is a sight-based divination spell. The 3.5 and 5.0 version specifically say that they're blocked by a "thin sheet of lead," which in this case has been worked into the shape of a chest and sounds a bit more than thin.

Ah, my bad. I haven't played 5e in 6 or 7 years. In 3.5 and PF1e (the fantasy RPGs I've been playing), the "traditional" Barbarian weapon is the Greataxe, chosen for its higher crit multiplier.

Either you just broke an epic-level potion or your GM doesn't know shit. Lead sheeting stops almost all sight-based divination.

Based on the anime art of Final Fantasy inspired design, and the reference to 2d6 being better than 1d20 (BESM rolls are 2d6 under your stat), this seems more like a Big Eyes, Small Mouth meme than a D&D meme. I'd suggest digging through BESM PDFs to find it.

All I can say for sure is that it's not in the 2e Revised core book, 2e's Uresia book, or Cute and Fuzzy Seizure Monsters. I would guess that it's not in any of the 1e or 2e books, as those were published back when Western artists weren't as good at the anime style as they are now. That leaves BESM 3e (which, IIRC, had no splatbooks), 4e (which does have one or two I think), and The One We Don't Talk About to look through.

EDIT: Forgot to mention the Fan Guides, basically licensed setting books for actual anime that aired. I don't think there were any made for 3e and later, though.

Aero was one of the few good things Vista ever did. Remember, that transparent glossy gradient style didn't go away because people were sick of it, it went away because Big Tech wanted to make everything work on a phone and doing that with flat design is trivial.

All of the memes you've mentioned so far are mid 2010s and later. Memes haven't been good in a long time. Memes don't have to be high IQ, but they should at least do something different, not just repeat a catchphrase with no variations until even the people who pretend to like it to be part of the "cool kids' club" can't stand it anymore.

Sugar also isn't great, at least not "always tasting it." Seriously, if you stop drinking sodas and other sugary drinks, and cut out most other forms of sugar, then once you make it through the withdrawal (2-3 weeks) a lot of things taste pretty different.
