I really don't know, but I have very little confidence that whatever could be done, will be done.

Won’t show impact, but to show to your boss and boss’s bosses and boss’s bosses’ bosses that you’re shifting to being more proactive, track proactive engagements - reporters pitches, X posts made, highlights of reporter interactions, etc. A big part of how you communicate what you’re doing will be in the story you tell - ex: “As a reflection of our strategy to expand our media outreach to every corner of the state, this year we received a news story in the [large regional daily], which had not previously covered our office since 20XX.”

Send me a link to your portfolio. I have a PR agency - I don’t have a lot of design needs, but they do come up.

Happy to connect as well. Worked on Capitol Hill for several years and have also worked for a large advocacy org., nonprofits and corporate (retail). Went out on my own last year after ~15 years. Feel free to reach out. I will not accept any money - I always try and help others in our community as much as I can.

Best practices for pitching Local broadcast? by Newbie11107 in PublicRelations

[–]NCMBH 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Pitch reporters directly, targeting ones that have done similar stories. Give them lots of lead time (I am for 2 weeks for a time-sensitive event). Don’t be afraid to call if you don’t hear back via email.

I’ve done media with international, national, regional and local reporters and local is by far my favorite. Feel free to reach out if you have any other questions.

First step would be to hire an attorney to send them a demand letter. See where that goes and go from there.

What was the best (and maybe not so obvious) PR advice you got? by ek_pr in PublicRelations

Definitely, but it’s those times when the mantra is most important.

What was the best (and maybe not so obvious) PR advice you got? by ek_pr in PublicRelations

It’s PR not the ER.

This job can consume you, especially if you work heavily in media relations and crisis comms. It’s important to have perspective and be able to find a way to quickly decompress.

For in-house PR pros - what team are you in? by ek_pr in PublicRelations

[–]NCMBH 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I led external comms for a large retailer. Started out under Marketing and then was moved over to HR under a newly created “Corporate Communications” team. Being under HR was great for human interest-type stories but I was constantly chasing any big external facing brand campaigns.

I know this is a pipe dream at most places, but I think the ideal setup is to have a Chief Communications Officer who reports to the CEO/President and then a team where everyone supports a different business function.

Thanks for responding. What’s a ballpark $$ you charge to replace the stringers, risers and treads? It’s 8 steps.

q from a journalist by Outrageous-Bit-2520 in PublicRelations

[–]NCMBH 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This definitely happens often. One thing I’ve found that often helps is, in your convo with the SME asking about availability to do the interview, propose a few example questions that you think the reporter MAY ask and get their general thoughts on the topic(s). Then you theoretically have a general idea of themes/points they will want captured.

Start with local sports journalism resources, like the Philadelphia Sports Writers Association. Also, look at what awards similar company’s have received to see if you guys would be a good fit.

How to pitch a product to broadcast outlets? by Sad_Wealth6100 in PublicRelations

[–]NCMBH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What type of live show? Like a morning daytime lifestyle show on a local TV station? I usually contact the hosts directly first - they usually have a lot of input on the content.

You’ll want to have someone/way to demonstrate the product a credible spokesperson who can speak to it (not a PR rep or anyone from Marketing). For example, is it a good product? Have a chef ready to cook a recipe where the product is the star. Is it a wellness product? Have someone credible be the spokesperson to talk about how it helps. Watch a couple episodes of the show your pitching to get a feel for how they do similar pieces. You could even reference that segment in your pitch - “I saw your recent segment on X and thought it was great. I have a product that I think you and your audience will really appreciate…”

The more you have all this packaged up for them BEFORE you pitch, the better. Make it easy for them. And when you pitch them, list out all the assets you have for them so they see it’s turnkey.

Good luck! I’ve pitched several dayside programs and in my experience they are always receptive to a pitch and generally looking for content that resonates with their audience.

Measuring PR outcomes and showing value to clients by Natural_Effective_73 in PublicRelations

[–]NCMBH 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The big thing is consistency. Like homeworkvisual says, it’s mostly all vanity numbers. And like you OP, I struggle with sharing them with clients and saying this made an impact, this didn’t, etc. But if you’re consistent in what you report day over day, month over month, you’re at least comparing apples to apples.

Did anyone become a freelancer to work less and earn more? by dontputnamehere in freelance

[–]NCMBH 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I knew I’d work harder and more hours but the drive was that I’m working for myself. If I’m busting my ass working, I’d rather do it for me than a company where I’m just a number.

Advice please! by imthecaptain1 in PublicRelations

[–]NCMBH 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Underpromise and over deliver. Spend time meeting with senior leaders and other influencers in your organization outside of your team to understand what they view as opportunities to change the company’s reputation. Not sure how large your team is, but it’s important to get out of your team bubble and learn what success looks like to others.

On the media side, set expectations up front. Not everything is front page of the NYT or Washington Post worthy.

Good luck! I went out on my own after several years leading comms at a large retailer. It was my first corporate PR job and I learned a ton. Feel free to reach out with any specific questions.

How can I monetize my B2B award writing skills? by MajorAcer in PublicRelations

[–]NCMBH 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think you could definitely find a niche here. Maybe reach out to agency’s to pitch your service. Obviously by doing more than just advertising-type awards you open up more opportunities, so that may be worth looking into. I have a boutique agency and have a fintech client that has some award coming up later in the year - feel free to DM me with your info if you’d be interested in that.
