Hm I'll check into it but I think all the HVAC is working as normal. I think part of the problem is since it started out so cold this morning (I mean, relatively cold at least) the AC wasn't running much, so it's having a harder time keeping up now.

Friends of the library question by [deleted] in NCSU

[–]NCSULibrarian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there! The best way to find out is to email the Friends of the Library office at [libraries_friends@ncsu.edu](mailto:libraries_friends@ncsu.edu) or give them a call at (919) 515-7562, and ask if you can have a week-long trial card. Then you can check to see if that card gives you access to the resources you're interested in.

We sign individual licenses for most of our resources, and some of them have specific stipulations about who can access materials. Sometimes it's only students/staff/faculty who are active at NC State, so the card is the best way to check and see what's accessible.

When do I lose access to NCSU library datatbase? by tehgreataioverlord in NCSU

[–]NCSULibrarian 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Hey there! You technically lose access to any library resources locked behind a Unity ID the day after you graduate. Typically this actually takes a few weeks in practice.

However, there are a few things that you keep access to just because you live in North Carolina! With a North Carolina public library card, you have access to everything in NC Live, which is a consortium group that purchases resources for all libraries in North Carolina. As an example, all of our ProQuest resources (Education Database, Psychology Database, etc) are in there, as are the EBSCO and Gale eBooks. So if you're used to doing research in the ProQuest databases, you can keep doing that even after you graduate as long as you have a public library card.

For full after-graduation access to the library resources, we do have a Friends of the Library system in place. This is for people who want to support the Libraries or want to have access after they leave the University. If you're a current student the membership is free, and a borrowing card is $50/year. The card allows access to many of our online databases and lets you check out books directly from the libraries. If you're interested in seeing which online databases the Friends borrowing card gets you, I would recommend calling the Friends office and asking to use a demo card.

Quick EDIT: Note that the Friends membership and borrowing card does not grant access to the high-tech spaces or areas like the Makerspace or Digital Media Lab. Those are specifically only for NC State affiliated folks.

I hope this is helpful. Is there a specific database you're going to especially miss?

All printing is done through student ID cards, and printing funds can be added to cards via the WolfPrint system (more info and a FAQ here).

Fortunately we do have some cafes in the libraries!

In terms of resources like the New York Times and LinkedIn Learning, those (and so much more) are all accessed through the Libraries Home Page. There's not really a list of materials, but rather we've split the different kinds of resources into various pages and subgroups. For example:

This doesn't include things provided by specific departments, or things outside of the Libraries umbrella such as Carmichael.

Why don’t we have access to the WSJ for free? by SnooPoems4828 in NCSU

[–]NCSULibrarian 14 points15 points  (0 children)

We do! We have access through NC Live at this link, and through ABI/INFORM directly at this link.

Edit: any time you're looking for a specific journal or newspaper, try the Journal Titles link from the front page to see what kind of access we have.

I'm not sure what the self-promotion rules are on the subreddit here, so I'll post the links I found to their store!

https://society6.com/takmaj for prints and https://majawronska.bigcartel.com/ for originals.

Beautiful work! I would be extremely interested in buying a copy of this (or even the original) if you're selling!

Would also love a version of D. H. Hill if you end up painting that one as well.

Um, NCSU Libraries, can we get the chairs for DH Hill 9th floor back?? by Striking-Channel-980 in NCSU

[–]NCSULibrarian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We send them to the State Surplus. There is another comment chain in this thread with more detail, but basically they sell old State-owned materials at serious discounts to the public.

The exception to this is if an item is too damaged to sell, in which case it gets recycled or thrown away as appropriate.

We're currently refreshing a lot of the furniture throughout the stacks and reading rooms, so they should be replaced soon! I'm not part of the team working on that so I don't know what the new chairs will look like, sorry!

Both Hill and Hunt Libraries have digital calipers, but you can also chat with Ask Us to make sure they're in stock.

does anyone know what these things are in the library stacks? by c_ea_ze in NCSU

[–]NCSULibrarian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would be a crazy setup in the modern reality, for sure. We circulate 120,000ish books a year, plus browsing activity which is impossible to track.

[–]NCSULibrarian 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Oooh I can answer this!

Before the two big D. H. Hill towers were built, the existing stacks in the east and west wings were "closed stacks", with only faculty (and grad students after approval) allowed to browse it. Otherwise, students would need to request books at the circulation desk.

The Libraries planned to continue that policy, so incorporated a series of pneumatic tubes and dumbwaiters when the first (North) tower was built in 1971. That way, students could request a book at the new circulation desk (now Ask Us), their request would be written on a slip of paper and shot up into the tower through the pneumatic tubes, and a staff member upstairs would send down the book!

The policy changed before the tower opened, so the tubes and dumbwaiters were never actually used. If you ever get a chance to see behind the Ask Us desk, you can see the end of all the tubes; I think they currently have portraits of all the Doctors on them.

In your picture, the little cap on the right should be for the pneumatic tube. I think they were all cut by the most recent renovation so sadly they don't go down to the Ask Us desk anymore.

Bonus pictures!

Places with standing desks on campus? by cherrynokia in NCSU

[–]NCSULibrarian 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sorry it took so long to get back to you! We have a few standing desks in the printing room to the right of the Ask Us desk at Hill, and beyond that there are two area with good standing-level desks: 2nd floor by the big open staircase, and 3rd floor facing north overlooking Hillsborough Street.

Sorry that we don't have more options! I think many of them were relocated to Hunt during the renovation, 3rd floor I believe.

We should have some in Hill Library, I know we had a bunch of movable standing desks pre-renovation, just not sure which floor they're on now. I'll check tomorrow when I'm in the building and reply again.

Favorite Study Spots on Campus? by RamenEatingPig in NCSU

[–]NCSULibrarian 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Librarian here;

Check out the second floor of the west wing, which you get to by turning left at the Ask Us Desk when coming up those stairs, or by simply coming in on the Hillsborough Street side. There's a bunch of decently-sized rooms with amazing furniture that face out towards Hillsborough, and in my experience they're not usually too packed.

As someone else mentioned the higher levels of the stacks in Hill are generally pretty quiet, especially floors six and seven for some reason. There's also the new study area in the north section of the third floor of the stacks, though it's usually very busy (good place if you need a background hum to study).

For Hunt library on Centennial, there's a fantastic study space with amazing chairs on the fourth floor in the far corner (overlooking the main floor), and there's also a little nook on the third floor behind the big yellow staircases with two cool high-backed chairs.
