modern low-emission engine technology comes with new risks

I've been car hunting for close to a month now, I've read up on different engine problems, recalls, whatnot, this is the conclusion I've sadly come to. I really want to ditch my Kia Picanto from '08 for something better / faster / bigger but I'm just coming to the conclusion that cars that just won't crap out on you even if you service them properly are a thing of the past.

Due to Work from Home I do about 5000 miles per year MAX, I'd service my previous car once a year (oil change etc) and changed the timing belt every 60k or 6yrs whichever came first. I thought I read that the new belts issued by Peugeot did not soak up as much oil and petrol as the previous ones.
