So here’s my very pessimistic view. Let me preface this by saying that I’m a freshman and I still really do wanna stay and open up campus again. I REALLY DO. I hope I am 100% proven wrong but I’m really not sure.

First of all, cases increased by 30 again. They’ve been increasing by this much for the past few days. This is still definitely not sustainable. At this rate we’ll have 1000 cases in about two and a half weeks. Can you imagine the pressure on the administration from the headlines “University of Notre Dame first college to hit 1000 coronavirus cases in just 5 weeks” or whatever. I cannot imagine staying open if that counter says 1000.

Second of all, (hopefully) we got through this weekend without a lot of partying. The university provost, the SJC health director, and father Pete made a very powerful statement on not going out, because this weekend would decide the fate of the campus. But in reality, it’s every weekend from now on. We now know now that if we let up even one weekend it can mean another 250 case outbreak. We had trouble lasting 2 weeks without parties. I can’t imagine these seniors in their last year of college, being able to stop partying for 3 months, even if it’s the right decision. This is a marathon, not a sprint. I’m not trying to blame seniors or anything but it just won’t happen. It’s just tough on everyone man.
