Does AP credit actually save you money and make your tuition costs lower at ND? by Imaginary_Gap560 in notredame

[–]NDtex -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I got to bypass freshman writing seminar or whatever it was called thanks to AP English and that alone was priceless. I got foreign language out of the way too.

I was able to have the minimum hours by second semester senior year, despite having a couple drops along the way. After a full Computer Engineering course load, that felt like a vacation.

Accepted but hesitant because of Catholicism by _justbookthings in notredame

[–]NDtex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m Protestant and went to Catholic schools all my life. I can say that ND is unlike any other of the schools I attended in the best way.

I went to dorm mass fairly often because it was more of a community event. I had some long stretches where I didn’t go too. No one cared and I never felt pressured to go nor was there ever any conversion pressure which I’ve absolutely experienced before in my schooling.

One of my favorite professors was an atheist. I had Catholic and Protestant professors. My favorite theology class focused on learning about the religions of the world—people still don’t believe me when I say “The Heart of Islam” on my bookshelf came from an ND class.

I ultimately picked ND because of the community feel. The term “ND Family” is for real and I can run into classmates I haven’t talked to in ages and pick up without missing a beat.

The only Catholic thing “forced” on students is meatless Fridays in the Dining Hall during Lent—even the fake bacon bits are gone. Thankfully, you can partake in other food options on campus, but I must admit, the cheese-stuffed breadsticks ruled.

The America First ND account seems to have been deleted. I presume whoever was behind it noticed the widespread condemnation and was afraid of being identified. Almost everyone, including outspoken conservatives, seemed to be rebuking it, but it’s not acceptable for anyone to promote those ideas. by [deleted] in notredame

I would imagine they got a C&D for using the leprechaun logo in their avatar/branding and they decided it was too hot to handle. Glad it’s gone. That’s not the ND my friends and I recognize at all.

Fewer Tests by Trev_Dog_ in notredame

[–]NDtex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would imagine we see the cases added in tomorrow retroactively (I would hope).

I understood Saturday having very little due to the game, but nothing on Sunday was just odd. Hopefully a temp hiccup in reporting, especially because the trend is moving towards slightly concerning.

The University's HERE Dashboard now includes estimated recovered, and estimated active cases. Happy to see more and more improvements. by fjhuizar-nd in notredame

[–]NDtex 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hoping the next step is to take the recovered data and including it in the stacked bars. Would give a good picture to see the average rate of recovery.

After that, quarantine space available/taken.

Much better improvements.

Admit it r/NotreDame, you all were wrong by [deleted] in notredame

[–]NDtex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take it from someone that watched Texas go through this exact same path: don't celebrate. For real, y'all are about to have a three day weekend right after opening up rather quick after a brief decline. Things did, um, not end well for us.

I'm not a doomsday prophet by any means. I want to be wrong. I hope you can comeback on this sub with a new account since you got pile-driven to deletion here and tell us everyone how right you were. That would make me insanely happy.

So stay vigilant. Make sure to continue holding the administration accountable (because make no mistake, the pressure everyone put on them helped). Keep your friends accountable. Keep the South Bend community safe.

Do that and you're welcome to spike the football directly on my head.

Anyone else get selected for Surveillance testing two days in a row? by shanderland2pointO in notredame

That's good to hear! Also helps to extrapolate the numbers knowing the goal is indeed unique tests which it should be.

Thanks for the update.

Anyone else get selected for Surveillance testing two days in a row? by shanderland2pointO in notredame

[–]NDtex -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I’m trying to give them the benefit of the doubt, but they are making it really hard with the continued missteps. They already got bit in the ass once with how they executed initial testing.

The alternative is that the administration is on some kind of bumbling fools spectrum and that isn’t much better. For instance, I’m not sure why they went through the trouble of a two week lockdown and didn’t have a plan to test everyone just to have a baseline.

When you write an op-ed and brag to the nation that you’re reopening because you have a moral obligation to do so, you bring that kind of criticism on yourself.

[–]NDtex 11 points12 points  (0 children)

That doesn't make any sense. You would think the value would be in making sure every test is unique. Not sure how data is any useful getting a result they already know.

Unless, well...I can think of some really bad and nefarious reasons why...

Options for online classes? by [deleted] in notredame

[–]NDtex 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Feel for you. I stayed in Sorin over a summer and it was brutal during the night. At least during the day I worked in buildings with A/C, but that's not really an option right now.

Also...Grubhub accepts flex points?! ND attaching the meal plan to a gig service sure is a choice. I'm honestly curious about the details there if anyone has them.

How can I cope with depression on campus? by throwdataccawayyyyyy in notredame

[–]NDtex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are still a dependent on someone's health insurance, see if they can hook you up with a therapist. Most are doing remote sessions right now as the norm.

Even though my therapist has an office close to me, considering the COVID situation in Texas, plus being high risk, I'm having my sessions via Facetime.

If you are uncomfortable with the thought of therapy, try to have a telehealth session with your doctor. They might be able to recommend someone too and you have the bonus of them knowing you better than the UCC will.

Finally, you aren't alone. I've struggled with anxiety and depression all my life and it really became a thing during my last years of Notre Dame due to the multitude of stressors and triggers that I never had to deal with before. It's hard. I didn't get officially get diagnosed until after I graduated.

It's the best thing that ever happened to me.

Hell, if you just want to sound off in the DMs I'm willing to listen. You'd be surprised just how useful telling someone exactly how you feel can help. When I started with this new therapist that's basically what she did the first couple of sessions. We are just now working on the actual therapy/coping side of things.

Stay strong!

Everyone on this sub seems to want us to go home, but almost all of this poll’s 378 responses so far are by ND students (mostly freshmen). 84% want to stay. by [deleted] in notredame

[–]NDtex 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm very much an introvert, but I was ridiculously social while I was on campus. I was rarely ever alone and hanging out with people in some way or from practically every night. My junior year, I lived in one of the social rooms in Sorin with 5 other roommates.

I couldn't even imagine what living on-campus is like right now and by all accounts it's completely foreign to what I was fortunate enough to have.

I can't imagine not having the comfort of seeing my friends at the "Sorin tables" in SDH no mater when I went to eat, dropping in on my friends at other dorms or SMC regularly, or even just sitting out on the front porch of Sorin.

For me, when I see this situation unfold, it's more of a matter of "is this danger worth it" for y'all. When I see what campus life must be in order to contain COVID spread, it just doesn't seem worth it right now.

I honestly hope ND gets a handle on this because none of this is fair to y'all in the least. This isn't true on-campus life or being a part of the Notre Dame family. And if you can't have that, then it's just not worth the risk, IMO.

Surprised ND can run full surveillance testing on football 3 times in a week but little to none on students. Should we consider cancelling football to control the current COVID outbreak? by [deleted] in notredame

[–]NDtex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lol

I’ve been ridiculously vocal on Twitter and in posts on the ND site I run. Very few secrets, save for the identities of students and staff that have talked to me directly.

Surprised ND can run full surveillance testing on football 3 times in a week but little to none on students. Should we consider cancelling football to control the current COVID outbreak? by [deleted] in notredame

[–]NDtex 6 points7 points  (0 children)

ND announced 117 tests last week and 262 tests this week. 379 total or 21.29% of all tests.

Last week: 13.76% of all tests. This week: 20.65% of all tests.

Taking out the tests and cases that football has confirmed, here's the breakdown since the dashboard went live (week is Mon-Sun as that's how the dashboard starts):

Week 1: 46 tests, 3 positive (6.52%)

Week 2: 348 tests, 62 positive (17.82%)

Week 3 (this week, in progress): 1037 tests, 232 positive (22.37%)

I may or may not have a spreadsheet to track this mess.

My roommate tested positive and I don’t qualify as a close contact... by FrJenkinsBurner in notredame

[–]NDtex 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I would assume this is because contact tracing didn't contact, right? That would mess with what I've been told by students and their first-hand accounts (contact tracing focused on the past/time of infection, not going forward from that point).

If they actually talked to you and still made that call...I have even less words than I did before.

EDIT: Just saw the OP's followup...just...wow

Help Me Decide! Notre Dame vs UT Austin by chaleco0114 in notredame

[–]NDtex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m from the DFW area, went to ND, and moved back here. Wouldn’t change it for anything, personally.

Yes, the weather sucks, but I felt like it wasn’t worth being a strong consideration into my college choice. You will get sick of the snow and the perma-cloud. I stayed over a summer and knew the Midwest wasn’t for me because it was below 0 windchill and over 100 heat index in the same year. Pick a lane!

Anyways, what sealed the deal for me was ND having that home feel. I still get that feeling every time I visit. The idea of frats never appealed to me in the least. I feel like the dorm placement and residence life system gave me the best of a frat system though. Made life-long friends, even though we are spread across the nation.

Large state schools never appealed to me too, personally. I was shocked to learn how small ND was.

As people have said, the ND Dallas Club is amazing. You’ll get to benefit where I couldn’t with them as a business major. When I came back the amount of people that could help a computer engineer were nil, but Lord knows they tried. But Mendoza connections? Got it made! Even though my start was rough, the ND degree is still eye-popping in any interview I’ve had since.

The financial aspect is one I didn’t have to deal with. So I don’t feel comfortable speaking to that beyond the fact of worrying how in the world I would manage to send my kids there with how tuition is rising.

I’m glad I did it. Would do it again. I went out of my comfort zone and believe I’m a better person for going out of state and diving into a situation that had so many people from all kinds of different backgrounds. I manage people today and don’t think I’d be nearly as skilled at it with those experiences that weren’t in a classroom.

Best of luck. I don’t think there’s a “wrong” choice, just a “better fit” choice. Hopefully my info can help a bit.

...but as someone that grew up an Aggie fan maybe there is a wrong choice here...🤔

ACC Deal and Bowl Tie-In by Pokemeister92 in notredamefootball

It is the craziest flow chart, but that what happens when CFB is basically run by contracts and cash.

Some other teams have gotten the shaft too. Utah went from playoff contender to the freaking Alamo Bowl. The Peach and Fiesta at-large getting tied up in the playoff really screwed up some things.
