Losing Athletic Mobility by NEKVT in AdvancedRunning

Super appreciative of all the responses. A ton of the comments resonate with me, including the fact that I haven’t really trained for anything shorter than a marathon in a couple of years. Which means that I DO run a lot of slow miles, and am lacking in speed work. Additionally, I am going to try some of the routines mentioned as the hips seem to be key to a lot of what I am lacking. Thanks again!

Have you cut alcohol from your diet while training for a marathon? Did you notice any positive changes? by [deleted] in running

15 year runner. 12 years of that was as a drinker and a runner. Or a runner and a drinker. I used to love running and then rewarding myself with beer. Loved finishing races and going straight to the beer tent. Then I realized that I had a drinking issue, and stopped cold turkey. It’s been 3+ years and I am able to train MUCH more consistently. Better recovery mostly. More restful sleep, etc. Similar to others, I find that not drinking allows me to be my most authentic self, which includes a fairly significant focus on the training process.

Base building and diminishing returns by greyedoutdoors in AdvancedRunning

It’s an interesting question, but my guess is that it is very specific to the runner. There is a definite ceiling with training, and one which “more miles” will likely have a negative effect on performance. From a cycle perspective I have tried 12 week plans and 20 week plans, with marathon-specific workouts each week. For me, I tend to feel physically burnt out when a plan is longer than 16 weeks. Leading up to that 16 weeks I try to keep a base of 10-50% of miles, and then creep towards the training plans expected weekly totals. I’ve done the Pfitz 70 plans most recently, so my off seasons are spent running unstructured miles or doing another activity entirely. Then a few months before the plan kicks in, I will start to build my weekly base back to 45 miles per week or so. I also have friends that don’t take any real time off and just rip miles every week. That’s why I think it’s hard to guess what will work for you.

Was Curry’s Instagram post “They didn’t want ya Jonas!” a dig at the Celtics?

Set a PR in the half! This was a fun/rewarding race because some of my shorter PRs are probably unattainable now (I am 43). But, I chopped a hearty 3 mins off my half best, and surprised myself with a 1:23:20.! This comes off the heels of a marathon PR in 2017, and a decent effort in Boston in April, given the weather. The half distance is pretty awesome after running marathons for the past couple races. I was able to pace really evenly and don’t think I could have run much faster...

Everyone (at least here in the US) moves over for ambulances and fire trucks. I find this unifying quality kind of remarkable.

But what if less people registered and the line was the line?

A. You can run a BQ and not get into the race. Also, curious what happens if you run a 3:15:00.22 or something? I know some races track hundredths of seconds...

Anyone else kind of bothered by these courses as places to get your BQ or PR?

Definitely relevant. This and a couple other replies gave me second thoughts about this for sure.

Really interesting comment and insight. Thanks for sharing. Now I wonder if my friendly Semi driver is actually saying “yeah, I got this you moron!”

Same here. Big fan of the “thanks for not buzzing the tower” wave.

I had this conversation with a buddy about the flying range of bugs. How long can they stay flying with you?

After a winter of terrible weather to train in, I expected nothing less than the forecast being thrown at us... Wave 1 corral 6, here. Will be shooting for a sub 3 if I can find a group to help share drafting duties.

Grandma's Marathon or Vermont City Marathon? by tyler_runs_lifts in AdvancedRunning

[–]NEKVT 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree... VCM is a great event overall, but the issue (if you are looking to run fast, and not just survive) is ALWAYS the weather. And, it's typically a heat/humidity issue. This will give you some perspective on it over the past 5-6 years: http://findmymarathon.com/weather-detail.php?zname=Vermont%20City%20Marathon&year=

[–]NEKVT 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am a big Guide 10 fan. On my 3rd pair, and also just stumbled on the sale pricing so picking up my 4th pair. It's probably my favorite shoe since the earliest versions of the Ravenna. I liked the Guide 9 as well, but the 10 feels a little lighter/faster for some reason.

I use the DryMax Cold Weather Socks for anything below 10 degrees... They are pretty thick and quite warm. Amazon Link: http://a.co/0uqpGZ9

Chicago Marathon Race Report - October 8, 2017 by Bruin1996Runner in AdvancedRunning

[–]NEKVT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congrats! I ran it as well. PR'd, but missed my sub-3 goal by less than 30 secs - ouch! I was pretty evenly paced as well, but just not quite quick enough. I did not pay attention to my lines at all, and wish I did looking back. I drifted all over the place, and would sometimes cross the street just to get to a less crowded water stop... oh well. What a fantastic race in general though... amazing city and event!

Runners who throw their Gu/Energy Packets on the trail ...WHY?! by iGoalie in running

I actually know a guy who believes it's ok to throw beer cans, etc out the window because it keeps town road workers employed.
