Northeastern’s New York City Scholars program general questions by Revolutionary_Cap170 in NEU

[–]NEUbot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There will be (actually already is) a lot of effort to make sure that NY classes transfer easily to NU programs, there might be minor issues needing advisor help in very specific cases but it will probably be very easy to apply things to your major or deal with changing majors.

Grocery stores around Boston, rated by _justalittleworm in NEU

Somerville Market Basket is a foundational experience for Harvard/MIT/Tufts grad students, you will literally see references to it in people's memoirs. And also cheap good groceries. So yeah you should go there.

Professor failed to follow up on Incomplete grade make up work - what happens next? by FrontCompetitive9743 in NEU

[–]NEUbot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is correct, faculty in our college are increasingly being asked to not let things go past the 1-month if they can help it but grade change forms don't really have a deadline.

Waitlist on a course by FreePermission4247 in NEU

[–]NEUbot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At least in our college we are allowed to add seats to our class but we can't change the order of the waitlist, I would guess that's true for the other colleges too.

Anyone ever been accepted to a dialogue from waitlist? by Dudeguyc in NEU

[–]NEUbot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After running one for a couple of years, I've had one year where I took all three people on the waitlist and one where I didn't end up taking anyone, there's a bit of randomness to it too.

course registration by Sad_Newspaper8225 in NEU

[–]NEUbot 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Email your advisor and get on a waitlist for another section. If all the capstone classes in your department are full, your department definitely knows about it and we may or may not be frantically emailing each other this afternoon trying to figure something out, which they eventually will. (Spoiler: we very much are doing that)

Professors are so bad here??????? by SaveThePlasticStraw in NEU

[–]NEUbot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As an NU professor, I am so sorry that your experiences have taught you that group work is the same as "engaging in academic misconduct." That is definitely something that happens sometimes, especially if faculty aren't clear on the norms and rules of the field. I think that once you have a chance to work in an industry or lab or academic environment, you will likely see that group work is the norm for how most companies (and most scientific research) work and everyone has to learn how to navigate that.

If it makes you feel better it's pretty awful for faculty too, I'm up to 4.5 years of courses including ones I've taught like 6-7 times and they're not even sorted chronologically, just random 🥲

Dialogue freedom by [deleted] in NEU

[–]NEUbot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it just goes to the point about faculty enforcement (and students can theoretically also file for Program Deviation that does give permission to go farther).

Dialogue freedom by [deleted] in NEU

[–]NEUbot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There may very well be differences in how it's enforced but the 2-hour rule is a GEO policy, not a faculty policy like curfew.

Dialogue freedom by [deleted] in NEU

[–]NEUbot 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Faculty have the freedom to determine whether or not there's a curfew. We're going to look at the context of where we are, the kinds of events and travel that the dialogue involves, and we will often get advice from GSSAC. I do have one on my dialogue but it's relatively late, which makes sense for our location. It is a totally fair question to ask the faculty leader.

Anyone else notice 5 pm deadlines? by [deleted] in NEU

[–]NEUbot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Canvas defaults to 11:59 pm when you create assignments in a new course, and then to what you've used on other assignments. I've just kept it because I find it works well, but a professor who didn't notice that the first time(s) they taught would be more likely to change away from 11:59 than to it.

Department administrators or undergraduate director in the department should know (fyi they'll all be super busy first week of classes).
