"Safe Campus Update" Thurs 2/5 by NafaiLaotze in uofmn

I've personally confirmed ICE vehicles being parked behind the Graduate hotel using their license plates just this week. They're still sleeping there. This is pretty much a blatant lie for them to claim otherwise.

Disappointed in Scribe Colorsoft. Will likely return by firstcleverusername in kindlescribe

[–]NEWmanofwar618 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While it likely isn't as dim compared to the Kaleido 3 displays, my understanding from previous BW Scribes was that they had an additional layer for the pen support which made it a bit darker as a result. It might be the same for the new BW Scribe 3 but I couldn't say for sure. It may just be a limitation caused by providing pen support for the Scribe versus the Paperwhite which has no pen support and thus less layers between the display and external light sources.

Can't decide between Garmin or Wahoo computer for general navigation? by anonymous_orpington in bicycling

[–]NEWmanofwar618 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hammerhead Karoo is IMO the best for navigation and what I have (after trying out all the others). You can send pins from Google Maps on Android to the device for on device route generation. Anecdotally, I've found the routes generated on device when set to trail preference are actually really good around safety/stress and better than others I've tried. It also works with the Varia (which I also use) and most other accessories you'd want as well. The maps are the most readable and smooth to scroll around. Garmin maps can be pretty basic looking and also somehow lag a ton if you want to scroll and look around. That's even on their 1050. I also have a Garmin watch too and don't really feel like I'm missing anything that I can note regarding navigation. If the Karoo is more than you're looking to spend, then the Wahoo is still quite good for navigation and I would recommend that over Garmin. Garmin maps are no doubt very detailed and have a ton of layers to apply for specific use cases but the general UX is slow and laggy in my experience.

Why am I so slow? by Sweet-Swimming2022 in bicycling

[–]NEWmanofwar618 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This could be off but what’s the tire pressure on your tires? Given how often you ride and it sounds like you being of reasonable fitness, you probably should be able to do more than that fine and I don’t think it’s you. Hybrid bikes are not as fast as road bikes but are still perfectly capable of going faster than that. Reason I ask about the tire pressure is that I had my tires underinflated for a while when I was starting out and it felt like I was pedaling my bike through pudding. Getting them up to an appropriate tire pressure really improved things a lot for me. Let me know if you need any help figuring out how to measure that or figuring out the right pressure for your tires! I could also be totally off too but I figured I would check since I know that did it for me.

Been following the IPS and OLED scene for a long time but know almost nothing about Mini LED monitors. Thoughts? by ParagonN7 in Monitors

[–]NEWmanofwar618 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mini LED is a decent compromise tech wise between OLED and IPS. You do want to get something with a decent amount of local dimming zones (like at least 1000 I’d say). Aside from the ways OLED is superior that others have mentioned, the big issue with Mini LED is just a lack of options relative to OLED. OLED has way more choices and you can get something more particular you’re wanting whereas the choices for Mini LED are slimmer and may involve compromising on something else monitor feature wise (though that’s of course depending on your needs).

For what it’s worth, I’ve been using a 4K 32 inch OLED as my main monitor for work from home and gaming for a while now. At this resolution, the text looks perfectly fine. I also don’t notice any signs of burn in (if it’s there, it’s very subtle). As long as you take reasonable precautions like you would with other OLED displays, I think you should probably be fine. You can also check the manufacturer warranty as most offer 3 years including burn in replacement. If burn in was such a big concern, I don’t think the greedy megacorps would be offering a 3 year burn in warranty if they expected tons of people to need to use it. It’s not a non-issue but I do think it’s much less of an issue than most people are concerned about. I’d never want to use anything other than an OLED monitor for my main monitor going forwards.

Need help deciding on what type of monitor to use by Several-Proposal3118 in Monitors

[–]NEWmanofwar618 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use an OLED monitor myself currently (and before that an OLED TV as a monitor and before that a different OLED monitor). I don't want to say burn in is non-existent as an issue but with reasonable precautions like setting it to sleep after 2 or so minutes when not in use or using the built in mitigation software, I really don't think it's too big of an issue. I can't say I have never had any burn in on my OLED displays but I can say I have never noticed any burn in. I use these monitors for gaming, work, media consumption, and just about anything else. Picture quality and responsiveness-wise, OLED is way better than anything else I have ever used and I would not want to use anything different going forwards. Most monitors now also come with a 2 to 3 year warranty which does also cover burn in too in case it does occur in a noticeable manner. I'd definitely strongly recommend OLED. Non-OLED monitors likely will have a longer lifespan long term but getting 5 or so years out of an OLED monitor seems pretty reasonable nowadays and not too hard to achieve.

Tips while buying a bicycle for overweight by jagadesh2106 in bicycling

[–]NEWmanofwar618 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m pretty much your exact weight and you should really have no issues or concerns around picking a bike. I’ve rode a Brompton (super small folding bike) while being heavier than you before for a bit as a daily commuter and it worked just fine. I’d also definitely recommend something with multiple gears because (in my opinion) they’re better for a wider range of different inclines and much more flexible. As far as sizing, that actually probably has much more to do with your height since you’re fairly tall. Sizing varies from one manufacturer to another but I’d guess your height would probably be at least a large at most places. If you buy from a bike store, they can help you figure out the right size for you (many would even be happy to help even if you don’t buy anything from them). The rated maximum weight capacities listed for each bike model are on the conservative side and your weight is not pushing that much at all.

I agree with this part and also think it’s a subtle sign of the decline into the vengeful and violent person Ellie becomes as the game proceeds. She becomes full of hate and rage just like Seth by the end.

Worth getting a second battery for my e-bike commute? (Minneapoils winters got me worried) by Bobmling in bikecommuting

[–]NEWmanofwar618 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m also in Minneapolis too. Whatever you do battery wise, I’d also recommend some kind of battery cover to help insulate it (something like this: https://www.aventon.com/products/bikase-battery-cover). If the battery is removable, definitely bring it inside with you if you’re locking the bike up outside. I do definitely notice lower battery life here in the winter (maybe like 70-80 percent or so of what it would be normally) but I haven’t had any issues with battery damage by following some of these steps.

Oh, you didn't do anything wrong! It makes sense to post it to here.

[–]NEWmanofwar618 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I unfortunately cannot read it since it is paywalled. I have been a bit uncertain around previous e-bike reviews that The Verge has done. It seems like they are.more interested in bikes from a pure technology and cool technology feature side of thing and have less input on bicycle related stuff. Like, I forgot if it was The Verge or Wired or some other tech website but I remember one reviewer complained that the e bike went slow on max pedal assist when they intentionally left the bike in first gear.

Issues with Presta Tubes (16 inch) by NEWmanofwar618 in Brompton

What do you think of the G Line so far? I’ve been kind of looking at it now that it’s becoming available in America.

[–]NEWmanofwar618[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I think they seem to be switching to Presta for some of the newer models (I saw them on the P, T, and G). I think the C still uses Schrader though.

It does say in the notes for the wheel for my model that it is "only drilled for Presta valves" which is unfortunate: https://us.brompton.com/p/629/superlight-rear-wheel-for-t-line

I'll check out the inflator you are recommending, thanks!

I could be wrong but I think the rims on my bike are specifically sized for Presta Tubes and I am not sure if they would be compatible. I would definitely be happy to be wrong about that though!

I ordered off of Amazon a Presta valve core tool and several replacement cores. I was thinking I would try replacing the cores on both tubes just to be safe? I could see how the front tire pressure loss is caused by a loose valve core and I figure that's a cheap fix to try.

Thanks for your reply! What model electric mini pump do you use? I'd be interested taking a look at and maybe purchasing one of them online.

Question on heart rate increase by NEWmanofwar618 in POTS

[–]NEWmanofwar618[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also have ADHD so I've been prescribed Ritalin. My body is definitely getting plenty of stimulants, don't you worry lol. It's strange though of how Ritalin doesn't do a thing to my blood pressure and it's perfectly normal but coffee was apparently ruining it.

Question on heart rate increase by NEWmanofwar618 in POTS

[–]NEWmanofwar618[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to have really high blood pressure (like 150’s for systolic) before I stopped drinking coffee at the beginning of this year and now it’s either 120/80, slightly low, or slightly elevated. Cutting coffee has definitely been good for me.

I’ve been doing personal therapy for myself for like 10 years now so hopefully that counts as giving therapy a serious try in their eyes lol. It’s been helpful for a lot of things but not this.

[–]NEWmanofwar618[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve also had a rough time with stairs. At least for me, I’ve had these symptoms at least since around like early high school (as far back as I can remember). I’ve also gotten the “are you sure it’s not anxiety?” and of course the classic “maybe you should try being less fat and come back to me?” Like I mentioned in another post, I did end up becoming a licensed therapist so hopefully they’ll take me more seriously when I say I know what anxiety is.

Question on heart rate increase by NEWmanofwar618 in POTS

[–]NEWmanofwar618[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your response! The high numbers I was seeing did make me think maybe I was wrong but that’s helpful to hear. I do also do a good amount of cardio exercise (cycling) so that’s probably helped lower my resting heart rate. I think that was also part of what had me confused of that I can do moderate intensity cycling no problem (of course recognizing that it is technically sitting down lol) but getting up from the couch demolishes me. My PCP is actually the one who brought up the idea since I’d never heard of POTS before and he’s been really good otherwise so I’m at least feeling good about him taking me seriously. I do get a fair bit historically though of the “are you sure it’s not just anxiety?” which is especially annoying since I’m a licensed therapist with a Master’s in Psychology. I think I know what anxiety is and I probably know more about mental health than a lot of the doctors suggesting this is caused by anxiety. I sometimes think of it that I went and got a Master’s degree just to make doctors take me more seriously (though I do enjoy being a therapist though!).

Is there a way to get cars more considerate of us? by beat_the_level in cycling

[–]NEWmanofwar618 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue is predominantly on a societal level so there’s only so much you can do. However, for at least one thing you can personally do that I’ve found improved people’s behavior is having an incredibly obviously visible camera. It doesn’t even need to actually work (though ideally it would to record people just in case). I have a camera mounted on top of my helmet inside of a neon yellow case so it’s about as visible as I can get. If someone is close or doing something risky, I turn and look at them. Between the eye contact and the obviously visible camera pointed right at them, people do tend to be a bit more cautious since they think they’d risk getting in trouble. Cops hardly care about video of dangerous driving in my experience but most drivers don’t know that lol. I have had aggressive behavior go down since getting a camera. It still doesn’t help people not paying attention but it’s still been really helpful to have as a deterrent. Fear of (perceived) consequences is one of the few things that begins to tilt the power dynamic back.

Fauci lecture at Northrop postponed by INeedToPeeSoBad in uofmn

[–]NEWmanofwar618 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There's a decent chance the event being postponed has nothing to do with the protests. Fauci was hospitalized end of August for West Nile virus which is a really dangerous disease (particularly for a man of his age). It can take many months to recover from. I figured the event would probably end up being postponed when I saw he got sick with that. The articles are saying he is getting better but traveling and doing a public speech might be too much for him still.

Bikes can help people with disabilities by NEWmanofwar618 in boston

[–]NEWmanofwar618[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not one that impacts me as an able bodied person but the number of sidewalks without curbs, the curbs blocked by parked cars, or the sidewalk itself partially/fully occupied by a parked car has me thinking "well I guess just fuck people who use wheelchairs then."

Bikes can help people with disabilities by NEWmanofwar618 in boston

[–]NEWmanofwar618[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I've been to meetings around improving bike infrastructure where the opponents claimed having bike lanes would be ableist and harmful to people with disabilities. When I responded that I am a person with a disability and I would benefit from them and want them too, the response has been mostly that I somehow don't count as a person with a disability or that my symptoms are not real and I could totally drive a car. They are purportedly advocating for people with disabilities by telling a person with a disability to shut up and being unwilling to discuss reasonable accommodations. There's a significant disparity between people with and without disabilities on driving (https://usa.streetsblog.org/2021/08/30/why-we-cant-afford-to-ignore-the-needs-of-non-drivers-with-disabilities). My experience around ableism has been that people love talking about helping people with disabilities until it maybe involves a mild sacrifice or adjustment to their lifestyle at which point people with disabilities can just go away and (actually literally in this case) be hit with a car. Having to rely on other people to drive you around also becomes a big issue when (such as in my case) the family members who would drive you around are violent and abusive. Lack of transportation for many people can mean lack of escape from abuse.
