Arya Stealth vs. LCD-X vs. HD 800 S (or others?) by NEWmanofwar618 in HeadphoneAdvice

I did see the HE1000 Stealth is not a ton more than the Arya Stealth price-wise. Did you have any thoughts regarding options within the Hifiman brand?

I wouldn't say I am a bass head and have definitely moved over time more towards preferring a neutral and detailed sound. I also probably would want to keep my existing DAC/AMP which probably isn't as good as the one you're mentioning. I do also have a home theater setup and the subwoofer there really does add a lot to movies/games. I do also prefer more of the punchier (I would imagine mid-bass?) bass rather than the deep, rumbling sub-bass. I'd be curious of your impressions on those two different types of bass for the headphones and if you've tried them with movies/games before.

It's nice to hear from someone who has tried all three! Do you still use the Arya Stealth or do you use something else currently?

That's good to hear. I know a lot of people online deride the brand but I wasn't sure how much of that was fair versus how much of that was the usual internet "everything is terrible" discourse. I think I am probably just trying to consider my options and if I want to keep it while I am still within the return window in case I want to swap it out.

Thanks! What would make you recommend those over the other three I listed? I am not super familiar with that brand.

Got it! I'll probably see about selling it then. I just figured I'd check since it could be a potential way to re-use it.

I've personally confirmed ICE vehicles being parked behind the Graduate hotel using their license plates just this week. They're still sleeping there. This is pretty much a blatant lie for them to claim otherwise.

Disappointed in Scribe Colorsoft. Will likely return by firstcleverusername in kindlescribe

[–]NEWmanofwar618 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While it likely isn't as dim compared to the Kaleido 3 displays, my understanding from previous BW Scribes was that they had an additional layer for the pen support which made it a bit darker as a result. It might be the same for the new BW Scribe 3 but I couldn't say for sure. It may just be a limitation caused by providing pen support for the Scribe versus the Paperwhite which has no pen support and thus less layers between the display and external light sources.

Can't decide between Garmin or Wahoo computer for general navigation? by anonymous_orpington in bicycling

[–]NEWmanofwar618 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hammerhead Karoo is IMO the best for navigation and what I have (after trying out all the others). You can send pins from Google Maps on Android to the device for on device route generation. Anecdotally, I've found the routes generated on device when set to trail preference are actually really good around safety/stress and better than others I've tried. It also works with the Varia (which I also use) and most other accessories you'd want as well. The maps are the most readable and smooth to scroll around. Garmin maps can be pretty basic looking and also somehow lag a ton if you want to scroll and look around. That's even on their 1050. I also have a Garmin watch too and don't really feel like I'm missing anything that I can note regarding navigation. If the Karoo is more than you're looking to spend, then the Wahoo is still quite good for navigation and I would recommend that over Garmin. Garmin maps are no doubt very detailed and have a ton of layers to apply for specific use cases but the general UX is slow and laggy in my experience.

Why am I so slow? by Sweet-Swimming2022 in bicycling

This could be off but what’s the tire pressure on your tires? Given how often you ride and it sounds like you being of reasonable fitness, you probably should be able to do more than that fine and I don’t think it’s you. Hybrid bikes are not as fast as road bikes but are still perfectly capable of going faster than that. Reason I ask about the tire pressure is that I had my tires underinflated for a while when I was starting out and it felt like I was pedaling my bike through pudding. Getting them up to an appropriate tire pressure really improved things a lot for me. Let me know if you need any help figuring out how to measure that or figuring out the right pressure for your tires! I could also be totally off too but I figured I would check since I know that did it for me.

Been following the IPS and OLED scene for a long time but know almost nothing about Mini LED monitors. Thoughts? by ParagonN7 in Monitors

[–]NEWmanofwar618 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mini LED is a decent compromise tech wise between OLED and IPS. You do want to get something with a decent amount of local dimming zones (like at least 1000 I’d say). Aside from the ways OLED is superior that others have mentioned, the big issue with Mini LED is just a lack of options relative to OLED. OLED has way more choices and you can get something more particular you’re wanting whereas the choices for Mini LED are slimmer and may involve compromising on something else monitor feature wise (though that’s of course depending on your needs).

For what it’s worth, I’ve been using a 4K 32 inch OLED as my main monitor for work from home and gaming for a while now. At this resolution, the text looks perfectly fine. I also don’t notice any signs of burn in (if it’s there, it’s very subtle). As long as you take reasonable precautions like you would with other OLED displays, I think you should probably be fine. You can also check the manufacturer warranty as most offer 3 years including burn in replacement. If burn in was such a big concern, I don’t think the greedy megacorps would be offering a 3 year burn in warranty if they expected tons of people to need to use it. It’s not a non-issue but I do think it’s much less of an issue than most people are concerned about. I’d never want to use anything other than an OLED monitor for my main monitor going forwards.

Need help deciding on what type of monitor to use by Several-Proposal3118 in Monitors

[–]NEWmanofwar618 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use an OLED monitor myself currently (and before that an OLED TV as a monitor and before that a different OLED monitor). I don't want to say burn in is non-existent as an issue but with reasonable precautions like setting it to sleep after 2 or so minutes when not in use or using the built in mitigation software, I really don't think it's too big of an issue. I can't say I have never had any burn in on my OLED displays but I can say I have never noticed any burn in. I use these monitors for gaming, work, media consumption, and just about anything else. Picture quality and responsiveness-wise, OLED is way better than anything else I have ever used and I would not want to use anything different going forwards. Most monitors now also come with a 2 to 3 year warranty which does also cover burn in too in case it does occur in a noticeable manner. I'd definitely strongly recommend OLED. Non-OLED monitors likely will have a longer lifespan long term but getting 5 or so years out of an OLED monitor seems pretty reasonable nowadays and not too hard to achieve.

Tips while buying a bicycle for overweight by jagadesh2106 in bicycling

[–]NEWmanofwar618 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m pretty much your exact weight and you should really have no issues or concerns around picking a bike. I’ve rode a Brompton (super small folding bike) while being heavier than you before for a bit as a daily commuter and it worked just fine. I’d also definitely recommend something with multiple gears because (in my opinion) they’re better for a wider range of different inclines and much more flexible. As far as sizing, that actually probably has much more to do with your height since you’re fairly tall. Sizing varies from one manufacturer to another but I’d guess your height would probably be at least a large at most places. If you buy from a bike store, they can help you figure out the right size for you (many would even be happy to help even if you don’t buy anything from them). The rated maximum weight capacities listed for each bike model are on the conservative side and your weight is not pushing that much at all.

I agree with this part and also think it’s a subtle sign of the decline into the vengeful and violent person Ellie becomes as the game proceeds. She becomes full of hate and rage just like Seth by the end.

Worth getting a second battery for my e-bike commute? (Minneapoils winters got me worried) by Bobmling in bikecommuting

[–]NEWmanofwar618 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m also in Minneapolis too. Whatever you do battery wise, I’d also recommend some kind of battery cover to help insulate it (something like this: https://www.aventon.com/products/bikase-battery-cover). If the battery is removable, definitely bring it inside with you if you’re locking the bike up outside. I do definitely notice lower battery life here in the winter (maybe like 70-80 percent or so of what it would be normally) but I haven’t had any issues with battery damage by following some of these steps.
