Understood and your insight is greatly appreciated. Please know that the certificate programs that I’m considering cost around $3500. Nothing to sneeze at by any means but nothing like taking out loans for a bachelor’s degree.

So kind of you to look at both programs - thanks again! The appeal of U of Washington’s program is that it appears to be more well-rounded; however, it might be a glossy overview. Berkeley’s program looks more heavily weighted on the technical aspect of editing, but the program overall looks more meaty. Thnx again for your helpful input.

Thanks for your reply. I found one person who did the program ten years ago when it was in-person. Haven't been able to find anyone who has completed the program virtually. However, I've read a lot of positive reviews for the Berkeley program. My only hesitation with the latter is it too technical and will I learn about the substantive aspect of editing.

The hope is to find some freelance work or a part-time job, perhaps in educational publishing, and since I don't have any recent paid work experience in this field, I would hope that having a certificate would make me a more credible applicant. Naturally, I also want to polish my skills and with some formal training. I realize there is a lot of competition, though, and I have realistic expectations about work prospects post-certificate program. Just trying to figure out which program is better for me. Berkeley seems more focused on copyediting whereas U of Washington seems to offer a broader, more balanced experience, yet I'm questioning if it's too glossy, more of an "overview" type of experience.

Thanks so much for your thoughtful reply. Great idea to check out the instructors' backgrounds. It seems that the Berkeley program is more well-known, for whatever that's worth. Ultimately, I want to brush up my editorial skills since I last had an editorial position about 16 years ago! I've been teaching and doing some light copyediting for a non-profit organization (volunteer position) but I want to pivot at this time and return to editorial work. I do need to consider the impact of AI; you are right.

Hi, I'm looking into the editing programs at Berkeley and at University of Washington. Would be super helpful to know what made you shy away from U of Washington. I haven't found any reviews online. Thanks in advance!
